it was 500 yards wide, but stayed on the ground more than 12 miles. chopper 4 saw trees down. no reports of injuries. take a look at this. look at the scene there. rain turned the cleveland park metro station into a water fall move the water. the station is back open this mo morning. turning to waldorf, the storms caused a house to go up in flames. it snapped a tree that sparked power lines. the tree fell on the garage. it took 50 firefighters to put out the flames here. the homeowner is left with $200,000 in damage. >> devastated. i just moved in here a

creating night life safety zones around the city. megan mcgrath is live with more on this. megan, good morning to you. >> reporter: well, good morning. it's summertime, of course. that means a lot of people are out and about. a lot of people are useing alternate transportation because of the safe track program. police want to make sure patrons and employees get home safe. they have five nighttime safety zones. you are going to see things like this. this is a temporary lighting stop here, solar powered, going to provide additional lighting in the area along connecticut avenue, one of these five safety zones. now, police are going to have extra patrols out during specific times when people are out and about, leaving bars and restaurants late at night. let's take a look at the area, the neighborhoods that are part of this program. h street, chinatown, dupont circle, u street and adams

avenue, vermont avenue, 14th street, champlain street. basically, they are going to focus on areas where folks are grabbing taxis, hooking up with ride share vehicles and the like between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. we are talking late at night and early morning hours. the program is going to kick in. it will run during the week from wednesday through sunday at those overnight hours. so, people who are out and about who perhapsormally take the metro, but are now taking taxi cabs, these are the areas you can go to. extra patrol and lighting. back to you in the studio. >> thank you, megan. 5:13. the third weekday morning commute for the second safetrack surge. riders are listening to the call to stay away from the blue, orange and silver line.

north korea tried two more launches overnight. this time, they are trying to shoot off intermediate range rockets which can go several hundred miles. south korea says one of the two failed. it's not clear how the other turned out. a man is in police custody. walker was killed in a shooter on hayes street in d.c. on june 2nd. 24-year-old hakeem burrows was arrested and charged with murder. the california assembly public safety committee approved a bill that would eliminate the ten-year statute of limitations rape cases. it gives victims of sexual assault more time to report it. gloria allred says many of her clients would benefit from the change.

spray. the day he was arrested, he was near a meeting of senior officials, a meeting he was aware of. powerful statements in children of the cassillo's. the jury recommended their father stay in life for killing their mother. nicholas said, quote, a big portion of my life is gone. lauden county jury recommended life in prison plus 16 years. monday, they found him guilty of killing his estranged wife in 2014 and staging it to look like a suicide. police in montgomery county were in the middle of a manhunt. it started when a neighbor saw a suspicious car and called police. when police got there, they encountered a robbery in progress. the suspect ran out of the house and jumped the fence. police looked for him in the area. two suspects stole a car and drove it tlau garage door

a statement from the olympic committee of ireland. they are extremely disappointed not to have mcilroy on their team. once again, this is an individual decision and they leave it up to the individual athletes. >> thank you. a lot of changes coming to the fairfax county police department. it will be another year and a half before the officers begin wearing body cameras. the county board of supervisors approved an 18 month period. "the washington post" says at least one member of the board say they spent enough time studying body cameras and believe the police should use them right away. another is how officers train and how the department communicates with the public. other changes to know about in virginia. in arlington county, cameras on school buses will, again, be able to catch you illegally driving by. the department turned off the

cost too much to deliver the tickets in person. now they can mail the tickets to you. if you drive past a school bus that stops, the fine is $250. the cameras turn back on july 1st. metro's plans to bring a station to potomac yard is one step closer to reality. the alexandria council approved a master plan permit for the proposed station. design work needs to happen. construction is expected to begin late next year. the station would open in 2020 along the blue and yellow line. maryland's planned purple line took a step forward. the group of private company that is will run the line reached a financial agreement on the $5.6 billion plan. it will change with the roads with development and trails. others are concerned about new development. >>

expected to be the metro's most disruptive portion of the program the orange, blue and silver lines are not running from eastern market to minnesota avenue. the potomac avenue stations are closed as well. erika gonzalez is live at the greenbelt with how commuters are coping with the closures. >> reporter: good morning. here is the greenbelt station. you are going to have buses coming and free express buses from new carrollton to greenbelt in this area. this is phase two. it looks nothing like phase one. this is disruptive for a huge portion of people. you have metro rail that is completely shut off for several days in a stretch of the blue, orange and silver lines you mentioned. this is really difficult for folks in prince george's county.

about bringing riders to and from busy new carrollton station. we know the buses cannot handle the volume of people that really need to get to and from work, home, et cetera. it is an extreme situation. that's how county executive put it. so, obviously talking about employees having the discussions with employers to have the possibility to telework the next couple days. this is only day three of this phase. this is more than two weeks worth of work happening. it's going to be a huge inconvenience for folks. we'll see the riders coming to the greenbelt station to get through the bottleneck area from new carrollton. i'm erika gonzalez, back to you. >> thank you. a new law about guns is about to take effect in virginia. it prohibits domestic abusers from possessing firearms

checking your windows as police search for a man who tried to pull a sleeping child from his bed in fairmont heights. the father says the 7-year-old was sleeping by his mother when someone reached through an unlocked window. she screamed and the man ran away. the father wants the person caught. >> i would like to see whoever it is running around here doing this to be caught. >> police are canvassing the neighborhood, interviewing people about what they saw. if you have information, contact prince george's county police. michigan's attorney general will hold a news conference to announce civil charges to the flint water crisis. two environmental employees were criminally charged. the water source was switched in 2014 to the flint river which led to lead contamination. a lot of back and forth about a jeep recall and whether fiat chrysler is
