complex fire has consumed nearly 5,000 acres since tuesday. only 10% of that has been contained. meanwhile, severe storms m pummel the midwest with fierce winds and even tornadoes. several tornadoes touched down in parts of illinois and leaving destruction and power outages in its wake. one storm chaser had a close encounter yesterday as he drove straight into a tornado grueling overhead. that is scary. bill karins joins us more on the extreme weather. i don't like that close-up view. i'm sorry. >> i don't know if anyone would. we haven't heard any reports of any destruction of any towns or major towns. that is great. we knew tornadoes were possible last night. 18 in northern illinois. blue dots wind damage across northern indiana and a few in ohio. storms are diving down across areas of southern ohio. a severe thunderstorm watch until 8:00 a.m. for areas of west virginia.

threat has been significantly diminished and if anything happens wind damage out of this. round one this morning and storms push down. regeneration of the storms later today. the area of greatest concern is cincinnati to lexington to charleston, west virginia. wind damage and isolated tornadoes and to mid-atlantic region could see isolated strong storms from d.c. and norfolk included later on this afternoon and this evening. the southern half of the country very hot. that hasn't changed. 112 in phoenix and mid to upper 90s from st. louis south wards to san antonio and if you want enjoyable air mass is the great lakes and northern new england. that is your national weather. now here is a closer look at your day ahead. well, again, the thunderstorms will be passing down through areas of west virginia and ohio this morning. then we will see new storms popping up as we go throughout the afternoon in the region. heat still on. not as many heat advisories or warnings today
