not guilty verdict was read. it is the third case to end without a guilty verdict. >> there have been two other acquittals. the other one ending with a hung jury. three other officers are facing trials this year. chris gordon in baltimore to explain what today's verdict means for those other cases. chris? >> reporter: well, jim and doreen, tonight the baltimore police department is saying that baltimore police officer goodson remains on suspension, but that his pay may be reinstated. demonstrators came here to the courthouse today. they were angry when they heard the not guilty verdicts. they marched in front of the baltimore courthouse protesting the acquittal of officer caesar goodson on all of the charges against him in the death of freddie gray. >> nobody is calling for people to carry out acts of violence, but the violence that has been carried out

over again has been by the police. >> reporter: officer goodson stood trial on seven charges, including second-degree depraved heart murder, manslaughter, and reckless endangerment. judge barry williams found goodson's failure to seat belt gray was not a criminal act. goodson didn't seek medical treatment for gray, but prosecutors failed to prove that goodson knew gray was in distress. there was insufficient evidence that goodson gave gray a rough ride. he couldn't determine if the wagon ran a stop sign by this video presented by prosecutors. >> we have a police department with a long, tortured history of distrust with the community, so the fact that you didn't secure a conviction, this is not an exoneration of the police department. >> reporter: legal experts

180 rounds of ammunition. they say he threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend. he threatened to kill her entire family. he threatened to shoot up her high school. according to court documents obtained by news4, the 17-year-old threatened his ex-girlfriend. he said he was going to her house and would kill her entire family and bring friends to watch. he said he was going to her school, eleanor roosevelt high, and shoot it up. he said he was going to her mother's workplace, shoot it up, and kill her mother. police say he also took pictures of his ex-girlfriend conducting sexual acts and posted them online because she wouldn't date him again. at a news conference about guns and violence today, police chief cathy lanier talked about how the police gun recovery unit moved in to stop this.

steve? >> reporter: hi, doreen. good evening. here in the u.s. capitol there are no plans for any gun votes on the house floor, but house democrats are jubilant. they feel they have advanced this issue they feel strongly about and helped their party in november by yanking the gun issue up to front burner. ending their protest, democrats marched down the capitol steps to declare victory. they'd put the gun issue on page one and made clear it is democrats demanding tougher laws. >> it is the new dawn of a new day in our fight. >> reporter: all night into the afternoon, democrats disrupted live streaming on social media the names of gun violence victims. democrats demand votes on background checks for every gun sale and no fly, no buy, banning gun sales to anyone on a terror watch or no fly list.

i'm chris lawrence at the live desk with an update to a story. we just heard from the attorney who represents the family of freddie gray. he was reacting to today's verdict that found officer caesar goodson not guilty in the death of their son. take a listen to what attorney billy murphy had to say. >> nonetheless, we are disappointed that the goal of the prosecution has not been achieved. they also understand everybody else's anger and frustration that no police officer has yet been brought to justice in this case. >> yeah, of the three cases that have been brought to trial so far, there have been two acquittals and one hung jury. murphy says the family is asking everyone to remain calm and peaceful and so far that's exactly what we've seen there in

scheme. >> reporter: prince george's county police used the website pa backpage to find prostitutes posting ads for sex. police arranged to meet this woman in the photo. the woman was taken into custody and the room she was using was purchased by brown, who was in another room a few doors down from the prostitute. >> he was with some other co-conspirators when we found him. >> reporter: brown and two other men were taken in custody. according to charges documents, brown admitted to purchasing the hotel room and said he owned the marijuana found in the woman's room. another man said he was responsible for posting the sex ad. prince george's county schools released a statement saying in part, prince george's county public schools is aware of the arrest of a langley park

disney world has reopened the beaches at its florida resort more than a week after a 2-year-old boy was killed by an alligator there. the beaches will be open during daylight hours only. the areas have alligator warning signs and temporary fences. disney is working on permanent long-term solutions to improve

lane graves drowned after being snatched by a gator while wading in the water with his family. police in herndon, virginia, are asking for help in their effort to bring two young runaways home. their focus is on these two 15-year-old girls. one was on her way back to school in april but never returned home. fanny has been gone since february. police in herndon have adopted an intense approach in an effort to return runaways back home. they're turning cases over to detectives in 48 hours or less. fanny's mom, who asked that her identity be concealed, spoke of her fears that grow each day that her child is gone. >> translator: it's not easy. i lay down and i know i'm safe, but i don't know where she is, if she's eating, if she's sleeping. it worries me because we're in a country that you don't really

don't get anything for free. >> investigators have heard one may be working at a restaurant in maryland. the man who walked into a baltimore tv station wearing a fake bomb and a costume pleads guilty to five charges, but a judge says he's not criminally responsible for his actions because he's mentally ill. back in april, alex walked into wbff tv wearing a hedgehog suit and a fake bomb made out of candy bars and wires. the judge ordered he be treated for swichizophrenia. he'll be eligible for release if doctors find his mental illness is under control. one man in this iconic war photograph has been misidentified. we'll tell you what the u.s. marine corps is doing to fix that mistake decades later.

one of the six men in that iconic photograph of the flag raising on iwo jima has been incorrectly identified for more than 70 years. the marine corps started looking into the issue after producers of a documentary found evidence that the men were misidentified. a panel investigated and they believe private first class harold shultz is in the photograph and not navy corpsman john bradley. both men have since passed away. shultz never talked about the issue. it was the last war of the 20th century. operation desert storm sent more than half a million american troops to the middle east. now 25 years later an effort is gaining strength to make sure those who didn't come home

never forgotten. aaron gilchrist has the story. >> this is the whole company. >> reporter: it's been a lot of years since fred wellman has flipped through the old photos of his first tour in the middle east. as a young army lieutenant, he flew scout missions in operation desert storm. >> we were facing the fourth largest army in the world at the time. iraq had fought for eight years. >> reporter: the war sent nearly 700,000 american troops to the persian gulf after iraq occupied kuwait. desert storm was a short war that ended in 90 days. it was a decisive coalition victory, but not one without costs. >> weather went bad. two men crashed their helicopter. >> reporter: wellman says they were two of 383 fighters who didn't come home. >> we feel that

close to the others, especially vietnam. >> reporter: here is the northwestern corner of the national mall where they're spearheading the effort to build the national desert storm war veterans memorial. >> it would be something that people would be able to see the history of our country kind of chronologically. >> reporter: stump and the memorial association have congressional approval to build. a massive curved wall will be built with kuwaiti stone. right now the memorial association is ramping up its fundraising efforts. stump believes it will cost $25 million or more to build the memorial. his group has only raised a

timeline, but we still want to have this up and dedicated sometime in 2018. >> reporter: in the meantime, stump is trying to create awareness. on memorial day, 500 desert storm vets marched in d.c.'s annual parade. it marked a first time a large number of its veterans met since the operation 25 years ago. >> i would just hate for america to forget there was a moment in time where we stood up when called and we did our duty and we did it well. >> the desert storm memorial association expects to have the site finalized by the end of the year and to break ground sometime in 2017. to learn more about this effort, search desert storm in the nbc washington app.
