people gunned down inside a district tonight. we talk to the sister of one of those victims. developing at 6:00, nearly two dozen people dead in the west virginia flooding, and the devastation has just caused the cancellation of a prestigious event many in the state were looking forward to. live in northwest washington, an investigation is underway now after a car fell through one of these plates last night. a live report ahead.

>> announcer: news 4 at 6:00 starts now. first tonight, new reaction after a triple murder in hyattsville. we brought you the story as breaking news last night at 11:00. police say a masked gunman burst into a home shooting five people and killing three of them. news 4 derrick ward talked to one of the relatives of one of the victims today. >> reporter: short street just our marlboro pike, a quiet street where neighbors lived for years. why folks are saying what what happened in this house friday night just before 10:00 is so ala alarming. police came to this house after the report of a shooting friday night. five people had been shot. three died. among them 50-year-old carlenea gray who lived at this home with her boyfriend and used to live right around the corner. >> the friendliest person you'd ever meet. >> reporter: she said le

counsel or to lend and ear or listening or shoulder to cry on. >> her home open to anybody who needed somewhere to go or -- just you needed to vent. my sister's boyfriend, who was out walking their dog came up, i guess, as everything was ending, and he was shot. >> reporter: police do not believe it was a random crime. as for the loved ones, they'd like to know why she was killed. her absence stings them all the more knowing it's time like this should would be the one offering words of comfort. >> she would. she absolutely would, and -- i just don't -- i don't know how i'm going to go through every day without seeing her again. >> reporter: police say they don't have a motive, nor a suspect in this triple murder. in prince george's county, derrick ward, news 4. a law enforcement officer in the hospital after being stabb

the officer was working special detail at the giant on alabama avenue in southeast. he was notified about a man consultant on surveillance video stealing in the store. he confronted the man and he pulled out a knife stabbing him in the neck, and upper body. the officer was conscious when taken to the hospital. the suspect got away. police believe a driver may have been drinking when she crashed into a maryland state trooper and another car in gaithersburg. had happened south of shady grove road. the female driver crashed into the state trooper who was conducting a traffic stop. the trooper and the woman were injured. both, though, are expected to be okay, and that road wound up being closed in both directions and caused traffic backups for hours. everything is expected to be back open tonight. the news 4 i-team

state police records finding many people do not follow maryland's move over law. that law requires drivers to shift over a when police are on the shoulder. since the law has passed at least seven troopers or their patrol cars have been hit while on the side of the road since january. developing right now, more fallout from the devastating flooding in west virginia. the pga tour in greenbrier resort canceled the greenbriar classic. 23 people now kwerconfirmed dea. amelia draper will are more later in the broadcast. d.c. fire & ems reminding everybody not to run generators inside, this after a carbon monoxide scare in northwest. firefighters called to a set of row houses this

monoxide inside the homes. the fumes came from a generator. emts checked out nine people for possible carbon monoxide poisoning. they're all doing okay. firefighters had to ventilate the homes, of course. right now, ddot engineers are taking action in tenleytown after a car partially fell slew a steel plate on wisconsin avenue. darcy spencer talked to the people who were in that car as it started to go down into the road. darcy? >> reporter: definitely some scary moments for that couple. we were told that ddot engineers and inspectors were back out here today taking a look at what happened. making sure things are safe. now, take a look from our camera on our live truck. you can see the plates out here along wisconsin avenue have all been replaced. officials determined that one of those plates shifted while that car was on top, causing it to fall in.

here along wisconsin avenue in tenleytown. the couple on the way to grab something to eat up the street. >> the light turned green. when it happened, cars going, kind of stopped. we stopped on the plate. it started to sink down. >> reporter: they were not hurt and able to climb out of the car. >> i'm not very happy about it. my car. hopefully it's not a lot of damage, but -- we'll see. >> reporter: these types it of plates are all over the city. this section of road dug up for a pepco project. many who ston to lopped to look car concerned, how could this happen and could it happen again? shelly madden has seen a heavy operator meticulously placing the plates. >> the plates lock. i see what they do to lock them, get them to pick them up and this other stuff. this is insane, and the two people in the car are lucky they're not hurt. >> reporter: a d.c. department of transportation inspector

accident. many are demanding officials make sure the plates that thousands drive over every day are safe. ddot officials tell me that an investigation is under way again to determine how exactly this happened and make sure it doesn't happen again. back to you, erica. >> scary stuff, darcy spencer, thank you very much. the leader of the effort to force britain out of the european union could pind r wind up becoming the country's next prime minister. many believe a conservative parliament member boris johnson is a front-runner for that job. johnson became the poster child for the campaign to exit the eu. current prime minister david cameron announced he would resign after the public voted in favor of the so-called brexit. still not clear when britain will actually notify the eu of its intention to leave. the u.s. military is trying to find a way to decrease the number of service member suicides. you'll see how one veteran is doing his part to raise awareness.

plane on the tarmac. the pilot tried to power the plane out of the hole but couldn't do it and tow crews tried to pull it plane out and their cables actually broke. finally all passengers taken off the plane and rebooked for later flights. and in the middle of a daring mission to raise awareness about service member suicide. former army special operations member josh collins is paddle boarding from corpus christi, texas, to new york city. collins just arrived in d.c. after a daring trip up the potomac. he says the money will go to the task force dagger foundation which helps vets battling ptsd. collins says the organization helped him and others find peace after war, and get off a cocktail of prescription drugs. >> my plan is to raise $22 million, which will treat roughly about 7,500 special operations soldiers, and within that,

a fast-moving wildfire consuming home after home after home in central california. look at that. it is now responsible for two deaths. an elderly man and woman overcome by smoke as they tried to leave their home on friday. so far 150 homes have burned, and thousands more are being threatened. california's governor declared a state of emergency. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. another red cross volunteer from our region is heading to west virginia to help people there deal with the flooding that's claimed at least 23 lives's in just a little bit, storm team 4 meteorologist amelia segal will show us what the state can expect from mother nature. first, the state's governor is asking for aid. we have a developing story. >> reporter: the rain has ended for now, but the effects of what's being called a once in a
