shocks a local community. two dozen people dead in the west virginia flooding. the pga doing something it's only done twice before. a top republican quits the gop and it's all because of donald trump. announcer: news 4 at 11:00 starts now. we are learning more about the victims in the district heights triple murder that left a neighborhood on edge. darcy spencer spoke to a neighbor and joins us with an update into the murder investigation. darcy? >> reporter: erika, one of those victims was 60 years old. he lived less than a half mile from the murder scene here. friends, family members and neighbors trying to figure out why he was here at the house and why he was murdered. >> so devastating when it happens to someone you

a great guy and was so close to him. >> reporter: this man, grieving the sudden and tragic loss of his neighbor, alan. the 60-year-old kept a meticulous home and yard, rode a harley and worked every day. >> he was a great, humble guy. very down to earth. if he knows you, he will do all he can for you. >> reporter: he was among the five people shot in this home in district heights friday night. three of them died. carl carlita gray was home at the time. two were shot and critically wounded. >> my sister -- was the friendliest person you would ever meet. i just don't -- i don't know how i'm going to go through everything without seeing her again. >> reporter: police say the shootings do not appear to be random.

today. you can find videos on our nbc washington app by searching west virginia. a law enforcement officer in the hospital after being stabbed multiple times this morning. the officer was working special dee tall at the giant in alabama in southeast when someone notified him about a thief. the officer confronted the man who then pulled out a knife and stabbed the officer. the officer was conscious. the attacker got away. many of you are sharing the story on our nbc washington facebook page tonight. charges could be coming for a driver that crashed in gaithersburg. the female driver hit the trooper's cruiser while he was conducting a traffic stop. both are recovering in the hospital tonight. people in the car that was originally stopped were not seriously hurt. police believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. a trip

new tonight, nbc news spoke exclusively with a volunteer sheriff's deputy who killed an unarmed man. he mistook his gun for a taser during a chase in tulsa, oklahoma. video shows the chase. you can hear a gunshot, then baits say, i shot him, i'm sorry bates is serving a four-year prison guard. he regrets becoming a reserve deputy. >> i regret that i decided to give something back to the community. i wish i hadn't signed up in 2007 to become a reserve deputy. >> the family of the man who was shot and killed say they forgive
