you can see the beltway approaching the wilson bridge. traffic moving smoothly on dry pavement. the walking, biking, hiking forecast, noontime temperatures low 80s. by 3:00, upper 80s. and by 6:00 p.m., back down in the to mid-80s. light wind with low humidity throughout the rest of the day with lots of sun. just a few high clouds drifting over. look at our next chance for storms and your fourth of july weeke weekend, that's coming up. and a man is dead after a shooting in southeast. this happened just after midnight on wahler place. someone called 911 to report gunshots. when police arrived, they found the man, he was rushed to the hospital but died. no word yet on a suspect. and we're working to learn how four people are doing after a crash in fairfax county. police say one person was trapped inside their car

huntraceway. two cars wiere involved in the crash. and greensboro metro station is closed, a drill in case of a smoke emergency. let's get over to derrick ward live with more. >> reporter: we're here in the greensboro station. what you are seeing behind me is the area where firefighters will do their triage when they bring the victims out of the tunnel. they say can you walk, are you having trouble breathing. if so, they're loaded on a stretcher. other passengers are walking up on their own. those are the ones who can do it. you have four county agencies, two state agencies as well as metro involved in this. and as you can imagine, one of the key things that they will be looking at is how the agencies will talk to each other. we hear more on that from metro transit police chief. >>

can't say that enough. whether it's unified communication with first responders, communicating with the riders and fellow employees. >> reporter: now, again the disaster scenario here is a unit he will in between the greensboro and tie so thysons c stations. it's about a mile long tunnel. this goes on until about 11:00. the station will be closed until 2:00. there is a shuttle taking you between greensboro and spring hill getting you around it. trains are running through, but expect to make other plans before 2:00 this afternoon. derrick ward, news 4. back to you. later in the day, arlington county police are conduct an active shooter drill at pentagon city mall, it will begin at 7:00 p.m. inside the mall and last until midnight. during that time, you will see lots of emergency vehicles in the parking lot, but they will not be using their sirens. and

information about the victims this friday night's triple murder this district heights as police continue their investigation. darcy spencer spoke to neighbors who are still trying to understand what is happening in their community. >> just so devastating when it happens to someone that you knew was a great guy, that was so close to hit. it hit you in a bad spot. >> reporter: this man grieving the loss of his neighbor, allen rowlett. he kept a meticulous home and worked every day. >> a great humble guy. very down to earth. if he knows you, he'll do all he can for you. >> reporter: rowlett was among the five people shot at this home in orleans avenue in district heights. three died. carlina gray was also killed. she lived in the home with her boyfriend. he was walking the dog at the time. he and another person were shot and critically wounded. >> my sister was the friendliest person you'd ever meet. i just don't know how i'm going

to go through every day without seeing her again. >> reporter: police say the shootings do not appear to be random, but they haven't released any information about the gunman or possible motive. >> having something tragic like this happen is heartbreaking. we need to stop the foolishness. >> i want whoever did it caught. >> so far no arrests have been made. this morning a d.c. cop remains in the hospital after he was stabbed at a grocery store. it happened at the giant on alabama avenue in southeast. that's where the officer was working a special detail when someone notified him about a suspected thief. the officer confronted the man who then pulled out a knife and stabbed him. we're told the officer was conscious on

hospital. his attacker got away. and the driver who crashed in to a maryland state trooper on saturday morning could be facing charges. the accident shut down traffic on i-270 in gaithersburg just south of shady grove road exit. police say the female driver hit the trooper's cruiser while he was conducting a traffic stop. both are recovering in the hospital. the people in the car that was originally stopped were not seriously hurt. investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. three men are dead after their boat capsized in california. a witness says a large wave hit the boat and tossed it over off the catalina island coast. three men were rescued from the water, a fourth swam to shore. two of the men are in critical condition. the coast guard has suspended the search for a family off the gulf coast. ace kimberly and his three teens had been living in a sailboat for months.

this was the scene inside a cincinnati police interrogation room last week. that's the murder suspect reaching for the officer's gun before he's quickly taken down. after a struggle, other officers, they rushed into help. at one point the suspect yelled to the officers kill me. they were able to subdue the guy th

now he's also facing assault charges. montgomery county is using an unconventional approach to solve its geese problem. the county will euthanize 150 geese from two parks and the birds will be processed and the meat donated to the maryland food bank. the county says geese feces is a big problem and can cause unsanitary conditions on lawn areas. it's an exhibit never seen before and it's coming to one of the smithsonian museums on the national mall. in october the sackler gallery will have an exhibit that represents a broad range of countries and eras. there are believed to be some as old as the early 8th and 7th centuries. bly bring on the heat. tom is upda

usually many of them -- many candidates being vetted for vice president like to say as little as possible. on one hand he didn't get into the specifics of vetting, but on the other hand he very much made the case of why he would be a good number two. how he's been a team player over the years. i asked him will you be comfortable advocating for somebody else's position if you don't agree and he said sometimes i've been, you know, a follower. surprisingly candid and pretty clear that he is very much willing to listen to any offer hillary clinton may or may not get. >> any idea of who donald trump might be looking at? >> i think it's pretty clear and the talks i've had with people close to him, he has two things that matter to him. number one is washington experience because he doesn't have it and number two is somebody who is conservative. who seeshl conservatives will be comfortable with. he cannot afford t

america is the security blanket for europe pure and simple. anytime europe is fractured, it just presents -- makes that challenge harder for the united states. and so in that respect, but financially, wall street, this could be a boon for them long term because whenever there is instability around the world, the moths most safe place to put money is in the united states. so a lot of london money could make its way to the united states in different ways. but the bigger issue is the middle class in every western democracy a basically screaming globalization stinks for me, tap the brakes please. and we're seeing it in this country, britain, happening in every western democracy. the question is there anything that the political elites can do about to calm the fears down. >> a fascinating discussion and we'll get more of it. >> you will, 15 minutes. >> you can see "meet the press" every sunday right here on nbc 4 right after "news 4 today." thank

well, today a pretty unique honor for a fallen police officer is taking place. the tin cannon brewing company is unveiling a new ale in honor of officer ashley guindon. you'll call guindon was killed her first day on the job as she responded to a domestic disturbance. the ale is debuting at an event to raise money for injured police officers, called for those who wear the blue we salute you. it will take place there 2:00 to 6:00 at the would ybrewery on le drive. ticket information will be on our nbc washington app. kids dream of growing up and becoming a police officer or firefighter. we want to introduce to you a biwho had tboy who has a chance experience it firsthand. >> and for a day, everyone called him chief.
