that breaking news from the supreme court, we have team coverage of two major decisions released in the last hour. >> julie carey has the information and angie goff is following the restrictive texas law. we begin with the former virginia governor's case. after more than a year of appeals, the supreme court has weighed in on this. >> it appears that former virginia governor bob mcdonnell may be getting a new trial. julie

what does this mean? >> this was the last ruling to come down so we're still sorting through all of the details but the jury instructions in this case, the supreme court has ruled, were flawed in the way that official acts were flawed. bob mcdonnell will not have to report to prison to serve his two-year prison sentence today but it doesn't mean that he's completely clear yet. the justices found that the constitutional official act is too broad. that means that governor mcdonnell's conviction is overturned but it's going to be up to the u.s. attorney's office to decide if he will be retried. there's a challenge for the prosecutors because the supreme court ruled that what prosecutors maintain that mcdonnell did, bribes that they say he accepted, they completely ce

i just talked to nbc pete williams a short time ago and he said this supreme court ruling cuts the legs out from under the prosecutors. so we're still awaiting word from the u.s. attorney's office about what there next step will be in light of the court ruling. >> so it's possible that there could be a new trial, not a guarantee? >> it is possible but not a guarantee. so now the u.s. attorney's office is going to evaluate what the supreme court has said about what constitutes an official act. and again, in talking to pete williams and his years of wisdom in covering the court, he says the supreme court has essentially said that action has to be taken on something that's pending. of course, we know that former governor mcdonnell and his attorneys argued all along that he never did anything on behalf of businessman johnny williams, that he never did anything in return for the loans, the gifts and the money that he received. >> and if the u.s. attorney

court struck down what was expected to be the toughest abortion law in the u.s. the justices voting 5-3 in favor of the texas clinic. the law rules that were previously passed resulted in more than 50% of the clinics in the state of texas closing down. now, there is a big impact here because there's a dozen other states with similar laws with strict regulations on how clinics are built and the doctors who work there, the practices and where they are admitted to perform surgical procedures. now, it is worth noting that last year in virginia, the state board of health delivered a big blow to abortion opponents, voting to reverse hospital rules for clinics under a campaign led by governor mcauliffe. that's the latest from the live

easier. 25 people have died. president obama has issued a federal disaster declaration for three counties allowing aid for temporary housing and repairs. we'll get an update from nbc's morgan radford at 11:30. a family now has to pick up what is left after their home was damaged in an intense fire. the house on harmon place in upper marlboro caught fire around 2:00. we don't know what started but we know that no one was injured. we have a call to prince george's county to get details about what happened. the search is on for a suspect accused of assaulting a special police officer. here's a photo of the man accused of stabbing a special police officer in southeast. it happened on saturday when someone notified the officer about a suspected thief. the officer confronted the man who then pulled out a knife, stabbed him and escaped. if you know who this is or have

call police. and this morning, maryland state police are investigating a hit-and-run that sent one person to the hospital. it happened on route 228 and greenwood drive in waldorf last night. ronald swerved his car to avoid hitting another car that made an unexpected u-turn. police say that the unidentified car sped off after the crash. cruise was air lifted and is in stable condition. there is another place for online buyers and sellers to meet up in fairfax county. it's called an exchange zone with the idea of keeping you safe. good morning. >> reporter: yes. we are at an exchange zone, the first of its kind, for online buyers and

business. here we are, there are two spaces designated for the exchange zones here at the sully district police station, clearly marked, you can see the warning about 24-hour surveillance on the sign. officers say if someone doesn't want to meet here, that should be a red flag to you about safety. >> they can pull in, it's under 24-hour video surveillance and conduct a transaction. no need to come inside. in the event of an emergency, they can call 911 or if they have a bad feeling, please just walk into the station and the officer can take that report and determine that everything is okay. >> reporter: and today is the official kickoff. this is a pilot program for fairfax county. what they are going to do is monitor this for the next few months. there's a lot of interest to put this in other police stations so th

right now, an inmate is on the run. this man, donald little, escaped and he and two other inmates vanished into a swamp yesterday after crawling out a window. the other two inmates were recap purchased overnight. however, little is still on the loose. he was in jail for violating his probation. so far, no arrests after a huge fight broke out between white supremacists and an anti fascist group. at least seven people were stabbed. they are all expected to survive and happened on the steps in sacramento. the fight broke out between 30 members of the traditionalists worker party and 400

counterprotesters. a cameraman was also assaulted after they protesters said they didn't want cameras at the event. the erskine wildfire in california has killed two people and destroyed 300 buildings. officials are warning that the death toll could rise. they were able to rescue a kitten from the rubble. >> aren't they cute? >> it looks beat up but nice they were able to get it out. so it's warm and that's going to change? >> it's washington. it's summer. and here comes the humidity. it's sweeping back in as we speak. along with that, triggering a few showers, unfortunately, some thundershowers right there in southeastern virginia where they got the terrible flooding last week. that's now passing through
