>> reporter: imagine you're on the metro. you're trying to get home, it's hot, it's humid outside. all of a sudden you have to evacuate the station. you're standing on the shuttle bus. it's absolutely awful. let's hear what riders had to say about it. >> frustrating. >> reporter: riders describe it as a metro mess after a fire breaks out on the tracks at the gallery place chinatown station. bianca falconi said it was frustrating. crews put out the fire and firefighters turned off the power as a safety precaution. >> this is not the scene anyone wants to see when they leave work after a long day. >> reporter: metro closed the station but then opened it to the red line. green and yellow line trains bypassed the station, suspending service between mt. vernon and lacrosse. >> we were down there and we could smell the smoke and everything like

downtown king georges county moving into southern maryland. here's some heavier ones in washington, right on down to alexandria and right on towards woodbridge. the pictures show this is a cold front back to the west that's slowly drifting down. that's why we have a better chance of showers tomorrow. could even be during your morning rush. we'll take you hour by hour in just a minute. we're following a developing story that involves your children's safety. ikea is recalling tens of millions of its dressers because they could tip over and crush little children. ikea issued the recall for at least 10 million pieces of furniture and won't sell the malm series anymore. in fact, ikea's president is telling customers to take it out of the room. it's very topheavy and easily tips when not attached to a wall. it's responsible for three deaths this

blocks away from the capitol right after the threats were made. but schmitt's defense attorney called it an artful political discussion, something his fiancee has backed up. >> it was just a twitter profile of a character. >> a satire, you're saying? >> a satire, or it wasn't him as a real person, it was a character playing out in a book. as a creative outlet. >> reporter: schmidt's fiancee says he doesn't even have a gun and was not issuing real threats. the man who had a gun and tried to get on the white house lawns with that gun drawn is going to be held in jail while awaiting his trial. he is recovering because he was shot in the chest by a secret service agent during that incident in may. his attorney is asking that he be allowed to serve home detention until his trial, but the judge sided with prosecutors after he took two videos of the man walking toward the white house withs

pointed at the ground. president obama adding his support to raising the minimum wage in the district. the white house releasing a statement commending mayor muriel bowser for signing the new legislation tonight. bowser signed newt law in columbia heights here. it will raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour by the year 2020. the district's first delegate to congress is in custody in loudoun county tonight, accused of writing a very large bad check in maryland. walter fauntroy was arrested this morning. he is accused of passing a $15,000 bad check and not showing up for a court appearance. this long-time civil leader spent two decades representing the district in congress. we hear he will appear via closed circuit television at his hearing tomorrow.

waive extradition tomorrow. they are lauding a supreme court decision to overrule his sentence on corruption charges. mcdonald and his wife were both convicted of doing favors for virginia businessmen, in exchange for gifts and loans. today mcdonald said in a statement that he would never betray the sacred trust of people who elected him. his case was sent back to prosecutors to see if they had enough evidence to retry him. in more than three decades, a three-year-old law in texas forcing half of the state's abortion clinics to shut down was struck down. that law required clinics where abortions are performed to meet the same standards as outpatient surgical centers. doctors are required to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital. the court decided those standards didn't make sense for the large number of women whose abortions require only taking

police detectives are back in that district heights neighborhood tonight where three people were killed over the weekend. >> and tonight they passed out flyers of the man with a distinctive walk caught on surveillance video quite casually leaving the scene just moments after those murders. news4's jackie benson is in that neighborhood with more on the certain for that killer. jackie? >> reporter: wendy, the suspended gunman managed to be seen on quite a few cameras during a fairly short period of time. you can see a gun in his hand. investigators tell us these shocking images show the man who just shot five people, killing three of them, as he left the house in the 3100 block of orleans avenue and cut through the yard of a nearby home. just 40 minutes before, the same man was seen on camera in a nearby convenience store.

avenue. when one of those metal plates shifted, tepco which installed the plate is being cited for this accident. ddot said the utility didn't meet permit conditions. it's not clear why it shifted, but they're looking to see if rain washed away that trench, causing the car to fall in and above it. alexandria trying to get the attention of the faa over a change in flight paths, spurring some major noise complaints. the faa says the noise is a direct result of its shift to a modern, more sophisticated system for managing air traffic. it's called nextgen and it's said to reduce some carbon emissions, speed up departures and save millions in fuel costs. but it's also changed flight path s in some cities, leaving residents helpless and sleepless in fairfax county.

ledecky holds the world record in the .400 meter freestyle. she didn't have to come close to that in the trials, but she did, and she's punching her ticket to rio. she's trying to become the first u.s. woman to swim four races at a single olympics. euan yang talked to katie about how she's getting ready. >> reporter: katie ledecky is already a champion swimmer. at age 19, she holds multiple world records and the fastest times in three distances in free style. four years ago, she didn't even expect to make the olympic team. but one goal. >> just pride and happiness, and the head coach will say something, kind of told the team beforehand, whenever that anthem plays, that's like our fight song and to always sing it out loudly, and that's what i did. i sang it and started crying.

>> reporter: katie will head to rio with more experience and more expectations. and while her fans will be watching to see whether she'll win more medals, she said it's all about the team. >> usa means cameraderie over the last couple years. it's been amazing because we've had some young swimmers and i've kind of been on that end of it. we've also had some older swimmers and really great veterans that have helped the youngest and given them really good advice. i think if the two feed on each other, it should be a really great olympics for the usa. >> reporter: now teen admirers admire katie not only for her swimming but her life ouide the olympics. >> i try to live my life in the best way i can, and i think the two kind of go hand in hand. >> reporter: she's gotten support from her school and her swim club. ll

airport, alexandria towards national harbor. down towards morton area, down towards woodridge. mt. vernon, you saw a shower there. down to the south, we're looking at even heavier rain down toward king georges county making its way to the potomac and southern maryland. it's all part of the system. it's a cold front making its way down. you can see it clearly defined here, this cold front moving in. we'll have a couple systems move through. another piece of energy tomorrow. that's what will kick off the storms. watch what happens overnight tonight. 8:00 a.m., notice we could still see some shower activity around 8:00 in the morning. i do expect to see clouds and some showers, and then a little bit of a break. then here comes a line of showers and storms. could be through here at 4:00 and 5:00. these are at 11:00 as the front kind of makes its way
