three explosions that hit the third busiest airport in europe. scott mcfarland -- scott macfa at the live news desk. >> they are focusing on the international arrivals and departure areas where there have been several explosions at the ataturk airport. this is just coming in to the live desk. the latest report is that at least ten people are dead. some of this footage is showing people being treated for injuries as well. the number we have right now, ten victims, ten people dead, comes from the turkish justice media. at least 40 people are injured in addition to those who died but that number, of course, is going to change as the evening progresses. the turkish government is calling this an attack a

suicide vests were being worn by the attackers. the explosions occurred outside the international arrivals area at ataturk airport. turkey has suffered several bombings in recent months. more information as it comes in. for now, i'm scott macfarlane. a man has died after having a confrontation with the d.c. police. >> he had a gun and refused to put it down. this unfolded along varnum street. pat collins is digging up the details. >> reporter: i'm here at police headquarters waiting for officials to tell us about a fatal, police-involved shooting last night in the pleasant hills apartments. they say it happened in the 100

police were called to the scene and there was a man with a gun. they called for him several times to drop the gun, drop the gun, drop the gun but then the man raised the gun and when he did, police opened fire. the resident manager there knew the man. >> he was a good guy. he didn't bother anybody. quiet. went about his business. i never would have thought he would do anything like this. >> reporter: turns out, the gun that the man had was a pellet gun. again, we're at police headquarters waiting for more information and perhaps even some body camera video. i'll have it all for you coming up at 5:00. see you then. for a second straight afternoon, we are tracking the threat of showers and storms. if it's sunny where you are right now, it's probably not a good thing.

kammerer. >> it was very warm and humid and once the sun came out, temperatures have shot up by five degrees. we're now sitting at 88 degrees. you can see what is happening. the clouds are moving east off of i-95. sunshine around leesburg. a line of storms have developed here. back towards winchester and stronger storms, too. these will all have the potential to produce heavy rain. the strongest ones to the east of winchester, around clark county and bluemont. it's the strongest storm in our area coming through middletown area. if you live in these areas, heads up, stay inside. no warning on these storms yet. right now, we're thinking winds up to 40 miles per hour but not severe.

new allegations against presumptive democratic hillary clinton but some lawmakers repeated the past criticism of the way she portrayed the attack as secretary of state. >> there's public/private contrast that continues for days, publicly telling the american people it was a video protest and privately saying that it was a terror attack. >> house democrats also say while security measures in benghazi were inadequate, that clinton never personally turned down a request for additional security. lawmakers continue to argue over the best way to fight the zika virus. today, democrats blocked a me measure that provides more than $1 billion but it was packed with spending cuts and restron

what happens next is unclear. public health officials just reported the first case of a baby born in florida with a birth defect related to zika. doctors say the patient is a haitian citizen who contracted the virus there. florida's governor called this diagnosis heartbreaking. civil rights leader and former d.c. delegate walter fauntroy was just released from the loudoun county jail. he walked out about an hour ago and hugged his wife dorothy. he was arrested yesterday at dulles airport when he returned from a flight in dubai. he spent the last four years abroad. there was a warrant issued for writing a bad check in 2009. the warrant was reduced to a summons to appear in court at a later tape. news4's tom sherwood was there he

>> reporter: so this was a little unusual. a rail fastener that held something in place started to arc and had an electrical current go through it. normally you'd expect something closer to the high-voltage third rail to show signs of smoke or an electrical event but it traveled across the rail to the other side. because of that, metro sent that fastener to a special lab to see what was going on. we're all kind of anxiously awaiting the results of that test and what happened. and all of the smoke that you saw at the gallery place was from a fire extinguisher and that's where most of the smoke came from. again, more unanswered questions. >> all right. adam tuss, thank you. we saw adam out there and it looked like clear skiesehind him but in the last few minutes we have just issued a weather alert here on news4. >> doug,

>> we have a severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 10:00. we're watching the storms coming through. right now, not too strong in our region. but with all of this heat and humidity, it's not going to take a lot for the storms to become stronger. this line coming through, areas of frederick, down towards the bluemont area, west of leesburg, nothing severe or strong. heavy rain up towards frederick and winds of maybe 30, 40 miles an hour but this is the area to watch. fairfax county and loudoun county and everybody to the north and east, including prince george's county and anne arundel county, too. not a lot of lightning with these storms. this is tracking in towards loudoun county. here's the one that i'm talking about right around bluemont right over the blueridge. more storms developing and then as we move up towards the north, we're tracking some of these to the north as well. all this line as we move up her

the jefferson area. farther up towards the east, middletown and here's frederick. you can see around middletown and frederick, very heavy rain and a little in the way of thunder and lightning, too, continuing to make its way in here. we'll continue to watch this as it moves on down across our region. severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 10:00 and encompasses the areas up towards philadelphia and new york city. this is something that we'll watch throughout the rest of the day. now, the severe weather risks, high winds, going to be a big factor this evening. a medium factor here. the heaviest will be the heavy rain. that's where we could have heavy downpours. hopefully they don't stay in place as far as the flash flood watch. here's why we have a potential for these storms. 86. look at the heat index. 95. a hot and humid atmosphere for sure.

>> reporter: this new report finds more than 5300 water systems across the u.s. in violation of federal rules limiting levels of lead in copper in tap water. >> the vast majority of violations were related to lead issues. a lot of them were for failure to test the water and some for fail to treat the water to ensure that there wasn't lead. >> reporter: the main concern is lead's lasting effect on the developing brains of children leading to learning and potential behavioral problems. flint, michigan, was one extreme example. that lead contamination occurred when the town's water supply was switched and corrosive water leaked into the water supply. philadelphia has been criticized for testing water in too few homes with lead service lines. >> you can't see it, you can't smell it. it's not something that you can detect. the only way to really know if you've got lead is to have your

and some roads were left covered with hailstones. it's being described as the largest auto-related consumer settlement in history and that's just the beginning. volkswagen has agreed to pay up to $15 billion after admitting it cheated on admission tests for years. as part of the settlement, the german automaker will either buy back the vehicles from customers or pay to have them repaired and those that get them fixed will get up to $10,000 on top of that. the company agreed to pay for ongoing clean air efforts. vw faces billion dollars more in fines. terms of the settlement were revealed today. >> i do think the regulators, volkswagen turned over half a million american drivers in to accomplices and unprecedented assault on our country's environment. >> the settlement covers nearly
