three suicide bombers attacked a busy airport in istanbul yesterday. it is the latest of several bombings to strike turkey in recent months. now, this latest attack comes two years to the day since isis leader declared the extremist group across europe. richard engel has the details. >> reporter: this was a coordinated attack. the first suicide bomber blew up his device, also opened fire with an assault rifle in a parking lot near the international terminal. that drew security forces, it drew onlookers. as

second suicide bomber detonated this time right next to a taxi stand at the door of the arrival hall. that explosion opened up a hole in the wall, a third suicide bomber was able to get right into the arrival hall and detonate another explosive. people were barricading themselves in bathrooms, most people decided to run out however they could. police were quick to react. they fired at the -- at the militants. one witness told us that he saw a police officer tackle one of the attackers. another video has emerged of showing a police officer shooting one of the militants who then moments later detonates his explosives. isis is the main suspect. the turkish government says it suspects isis was responsible for this attack and two weeks ago n

u.s. counterterrorism official told us that isis had staged more than 35 militants in turkey with the intention of carrying out attacks during the muslim holy month of ramadan. there is a concern that there could be -- that this could be just the start of a wave of attacks. nbc news, istanbul. thank you i richard. all inbound and outbound flights have been halted after the attack. ten passengers enroute had been temporarily grounded but it's potentially those flights headed for the u.s. that has many people worried. >> we expect those airports to ensure they meet those standards and that includes the people on the aircraft, the people who service the aircraft and the cargo that

>> americans are waking up to increased security across the country. tracie potts joins us for more. what can people expect as they head to the airport over the next several days. >> reporter: you may see more increased security, but we're not seeing a directive coming from homeland security for more security around the united states. they do not say that our airports are a target. you were talking about those inbound and outbound flights. there were some already in the air when that happened. here's reaction from some of those passengers as they landed. >> i don't know. i feel so worried and helpless about this. >> i just heard about the news, picking up my bags here and i traveled through that airport many times,

work travels so -- it's something that i do on a regular basis. >> reporter: the federal government trying to reassure americans that foreign airports with flights into the u.s. are inspected regularly. some of them have extra requirements based on what's happening there and the flight crews, the ground crews, the people who service those planes are checked against terror watch lists. ironically the state department had just put out a travel warning not to travel in turkey just one day before this happened. three crew members are still missing at this hour after two trains collided in texas tuesday morning. that blaze was so massive rescue crews had to battle it into the night in an effort to recover the missing. a fourth crew member who jumped from the train remains in the hospital. the toxic
