base reported seeing people with long guns on campus, reported an active shooter situation. well, we now know that it was a misunderstanding. there was an active shooter drill that was scheduled for this morning inside that medical facility, it's been scheduled for some time, but obviously not everybody on base received word of that drill, including the person that placed that phone call. however, out of an abundance of caution until they sorted things out, the base was put on lockdown. so they had this drilled scheduled. but then got what they called a real world warning. out of an abundance of caution, they followed their protocols for an active shooter until they could sort things out and figure out exactly what happened. at about 10:30 this morning, that's when they realized the mistake, the all clear was given. we spoke to a man who worked on the base who said for a while there it was prty

scary. >> got to the front gate and immediately got turned around, they were searching every single vehicle. they said there was an active shooter drill at first and then they promptly changed it to an active shooter who is the real deal. they started getting people off base as quickly as possible. as soon as i got up to anywhere near the gate, police cars, back and forth and they just said everybody out. >> and you're taking a live look now. i can presume that these are personnel who were inside that malcolm grove medical center that were evacuated as all of this was occurring this morning. you can see everybody now very calmly walking back toward the building now that the all clear has been given. people sheltered in place, though, for quite a while as they had to sort all of this out. i spoke to one man who was inside his office here on the base and he said he got an alert saying there was a potential active

then they just all followed protocols. went to his office, locked the door, hunkered down and awaited additional word. he said they very trained in this sort of thing. he said a lot of information is given to those who work on the base for just such scenarios like this. but can you see now as people are starting to walk back toward this medical facility, things now getting back to normal here at joint base -- joint base andrews. but for a while there, it was pretty confusing. back to you all in the studio. erika. >> megan, mcgra aan mcgrath, th. >> as news broke, security upgrades, including 100% i.d. check at washin

tracee wilkins is outside the base. what are you hearing? >> we are standing by for a press conference. there's a bank of microphones to my right waiting for someone to come and explain to us exactly what happened and why there was an apparent breakdown in communication between the folks who handle security for base andrews and then also for prince georges police department as well. there are going to be definitely folks we hear from from here. still no word if we'll hear from anybody from joint base andrews. to point to how serious this was, there were folks who were not able to get on to the base while it was on lockdown. hear now from a lieutenant colonel i spoke to just outside of the base's fences.

assistance from them was requested and the only news that they were getting was from social media and from the news media. just minutes ago we saw two marine helicopters flying overhead, apparently bringing vice president biden to joint base andrews for what had been reported as a 12:00 flight that he was held at his residence on massachusetts avenue while this was going on. it appears there is the all clear and vice president biden is here as well. so that's the situation. the people on the base were sheltering in place and for about an hour and a half, all we got from the public affairs office was we are treating this like an active shooter situation. >> reporter: this is why we are anxious to hear from the public information office. we're hoping they are going to join us here at these

that one american citizen was injured but not seriously. three people opened fire at the airport tuesday, then detonated suicide vests. two had made it beyond the initial security area. we've learned those attackers were from russia, ub ek stan and kurdistan. officials are saying isis may be responsible for the attack. no one has taken responsibility but officials say all signs point to isis. raid were conducted overnight and 22 people were arrested. >> changes are coming to the military too fast, that is what some say about transgender se

those communities work to assess the flooding damage. just yesterday the federal government approved a disaster aid package totaling ten counties. those that live there can apply for individual aid to cover housing or other needs. you can help the flood victims by heading to a police station in fairfax county this week. all local police stations have drop boxes where you can donate items like canned foods, cleaning supplies, bottled water. those items will be picked up on july 9th and isn't to communities affected by the flooding. >> and as we approach the holiday weekend, all people want to know about is whether the fireworks are going to be on. there's some uncertainty during those days. >> there's a pretty substantial chance for rain but not a lot of confidence yet. the computer models are going back and forth between rain and no rain. there's a pretty solid chance we'll have to deal with some rain on monday. we'll update ourr

back to our extended coverage now. the breaking news at joint base andrews. >> the facility was on lockdown for hours this morning after reports of an active shooter. that was not the case. megan mcgrath live along allentown road outside the medical facility. megan, what are you learning at this hour? >> well, we can tell you that the lockdown situation at joint base andrews is over, things returning to normal with the exception, they say, of an ongoing investigation inside the malcolm grove medical center. this is where the call came in about an active shooter this morning. we now know that that was a misunderstanding that there never was an active shooter. in the last hour we have seen people going in and out of that building, appearing to do normal business inside. now, this all began to unfol

there was an active shooter drill planned for 9:00 this morning inside the malcolm grove medical center. that is when people with guns, people did not know about the drill and many on base knew about the drill but in an abundance of caution, because of this phone call, they declared an active situation here. they asked employees to go on lockdown, to shelter in place and that's what folks did. we talked to one gentleman who was inside, he received an alert saying to shelter in place. he locked the door to his office, he hunkered down and awaited word. then we saw police activity all around the base and in the area around the mall come grow medical center. that continued for some time. people were turned around at the base while they

road and overturned. the other students are expected to recover. the crash remains under investigation. >> tempers flared at a community meeting last night in capitol hill. residents told the police chief they are they had up with the violence on their streets and the response from d.c. police. >> police come around and make them move from one corner to the next and they come right back. >> neighbors also raised concerns about repeat offenders. the police have identified 50 people who they arrested who all together have been arrested 800 times. >> a pregnant woman said she was denied access to the rest room at the metro and ended up getting sick. >> let call this the great metro bathroom debate.

shady grove station last week, asking to use a rest room, a rest room she had used a couple of times before, she was all of a sudden told she could no longer use that rest room. here's the kicker, this woman is five months pregnant. >> unfortunately, i ended up having an accident and got so upset and was embarrassed and got sick on myself and had to go home. >> reporter: she filed a customer complaint and when she got no action, so she called us. and she said once he saw the station manager, it was much different. >> he immediately got up, unlocked the bathroom and said channel 4 already called us. >> right now montana wildlife officials are looking for a grizzly bear that's responsible for killing a 38-year-old man. the local sheriff's office says

the trails near glacier national park. they apparently scared the bear. he knocked one man off his bike and killed him. the other rider was able to get away unharmed. >> fireworks are fun for the family. this holiday, you might want to rethink taking the family pet to the celebration. the national humane society says fireworks can pose a risk to pets because the fireworks will scare them. some will run away and get lost. the key is to keep them at home and pull the curtains. >> make sure all your doors and windows are closed and securely locked. animals have been known to push through screens even when they wouldn't normally do that because they're frightened by the noise and light. >> make sure your pets are wearing an i.d. tag, even cats that, don't normally go

severe weather risk but any time we have the rumble of thunder at the tail end of friday, the earlier can you leave town the better tomorrow. saturday and sunday beautiful weather returns, lower humidity for saturday and sunday after a humid day tomorrow and then unfortunately for monday there is at least a chance for rain showers moving back into the picture. but there you can see no more 90s in the next five days. that's excellent news. beyond that it looks like higher heat and humidity will build in for the second part of next week. weather down at the beaches will also be very nice this weekend with a little chance for a shower down there sunday and monday. if you're planning on laying out in the sand chthis weekend, the weather will be very cooperative. >> thank you for joining us. we're back
