we'll keep you posted on that. 6:01. right now, many drivers are looking to get an early start to the holiday weekend. a live look, you saw the image from chopper 4 there of some traffic. right now, we want to get toé3÷ megan mcgrath live at the bay bridge with how things are looking on the roads. megan. >> reporter: things are looking pretty good. over a million people are going to be traveling out of town for this fourth of july week. many of them will be crossing the bay bridge headed to the beaches. take a look behind me here. a live look at the bridge itself. crossed a little while ago. didn't wait at all at the toll no traffic at all. as the day progresses, that situation is going to change dramatically as people leave town. so the advice here is leave early or leave late. not everyone is traveling to the beach. about 43 million people are traveling nationwide in a variety of

areas. that's definitely the most popular mode of transportation. 7% of folks are going to take a plane. 5% will be traveling by train, bus or taking a cruise. a lot of people out and about. this is record-breaking numbers here. more people traveling for fourth of july than traveled during the memorial day weekend in our area. so that's a little bit different. cheap gas prices. that's helping people make the decision to leave the house, and take to the car, and really nine out of ten people are going to be driving, so if you are out there on the areas highways, expect a lot of company and plan accordingly. back to you guys. >> megan mentioned those lower gas prices, that many more cars $2.54 for regular unleaded on average to fill up. gas is cheaper in virginia at $2.37. gallon in maryland,

dealing with tree limbs that came down over the sound wall. only a single lane getting by. big delays building trying to get out of falls church. several high schools in montgomery county are about to get new turf soccer feels. the school board announced it settled a legal dispute with montgomery soccer incorporated. they will invest up to $5 million in fields at several schools. the youth soccer organization will get access to the fields when not in use by the schools. montgomery county public schools has a brand-new superintendent. >> that person is dr. jack smith. he was named back in february after serving as the interim state superintendent of maryland schools. >> that's right. and he is here live with us this morning on his very first day on the job. he's s

today. thanks for joining us. >> thank you for having me. >> what does this first day look like for you? obviously, it's starting with us and what happens after that. >> i'll head back to the office and start workinäp on the varis questions and challenges and issues and opportunities that exist for 157,000 students in montgomery county. >> obviously, you've spent some time in the interim state superintendent role. you've had to work with school districts across the state. you are coming into the largest school district now in maryland. what do you see as challenges that you think you would have +z$ address right out of the gate? obviously you've been aware of what's going on. >> montgomery county has a strong history and tradition of learning and opportunity for students and a great many students in the school system do very, very well. not everyone does well, however. so any time anyone in any educational position takes a role, they have to immediately pay attention to what's going very well for students and areas for improvement. i'll immediately begin looking at

student learning and because some of our students do not have the opportunities and the choices they need when they walk off the stage with a diploma. >> is there new vision going forward and do you start making those changes right away or do you give some time for parents, for teachers, for students to get to know you before some things start moving around? >> i think we do both. i have no plans to make wholesale changes in the district right away. even with staff, i plan to work with the stafforvxv that's ther. we immediately begin building relationships and coalitions on behalf of student learning and student success, and those have been in place in the system and i just want to continue to build those and strengthen them so that more and more students have opportunities as they finish each level of school,p,á2ñ elemy to middle, middle to high, high to life. >> all right. we appreciate you joining us
