in the low 70s. comfortable out there. may not make it out of the 70s the next few days. that forecast coming up. >> lauren, thank you very much. we have been following breaking news out of silver spring where dozens of firefighters have finally gotten flames under control at a home on horn beck road. live on the scene this morning, derrick ward. what do you have for us, derrick? >> reporter: good morning. take a look. the scene here in the 2100 block of norbeck roald. fire broke out around 7:00, 7:15 spotted by a passerby. joining me, the montgomery county fire department. can you tell us about what happened here? essentially two structures you're dealing with? >> the original house is about 1940s. obviously, an addition next to it that's one story. 911 calls just after 7:15, from passerbys telling us a large fire in the house.

people, up to four, trappedness the structure. we added additional resources to the event. about 100 firefighters and 40 pieces of apparatus. starting to release units now but did an exhaustive search at the same time faced with a large volume of fire coming out of this structure. additional interviews with the occupant lead us to believe there was no one else at home, except for the elderly female that was here, has minor burns, or minor injuries. so we are still, would go on hot spots, you can see, over our shoulders, and working through to begin an origin of investigation into the structure. >> reporter: we talked about the date. you said pre-1940s, this a little later. what are the differences in fighting fires in two different structures like that? >> legacy construction, 1940s, before the early '70s and '80s. solid built, could be balloon frame, plaster, versus drywall, a lot less void spaces. a

newer constructions, those buildings are almost burnt to bail or burnt to collapse. so neither of these structures we a concern for that, but a large body of fire, you can see a good 20 to 40 minutes of fire involvement here and the structures are still standing, but that's supporting through the building construction. >> reporter: when you say balloon structure, meaning it allows the fire to spread? >> means the 2x4 or 2x6 on the ground goes up 20 to 30 feet all the way to the roof, meaning void space available from a hole in the wall on the first floor to get all the way, fire up into the atic. that . >> reporter: luckily no one was hurt. back to you. >> quite the scene there. thank you. a homicide investigation is underway in alexandria. it happened in the 1000 block of first street. we now know the victim's maim. laquan hall found shot around 1:00 this morning. he died

another homicide happened on the same block just a few weeks ago. developing out of southeast d.c. this morning, police say a man is dead after he was shot multiple times on 18th street, justice after midnight. the man was taken to the hospital where he later died. they are still looking for a suspect in this homicide. a three-car collision on georgia avenue on forest glen road in silver spring sent six people to the hospital early this morning. montgomery county police say at least two people were headed to trauma units. police are still investigating what caused the crash. a developing situation underway in bangladesh where 20 hostages and 2 officers have been killed following an attack on a popular restaurant in the capital city of dhaka. command ohs stormed the building to free hostages following a ten-hour standoff that began friday night. and more than a dozen hostages were rescued including foreigners and isis-affiliated news agency reports that terror group does claim responsibility forhe

has not been confirmed. meanwhile, another cafe attack in serbia put a gunman behind bars. five people killed in a town 30 miles northwest of belgrade this morning. now, 20 others wounded. police say the attacker shot his wife and another woman inside the restaurant before he turned the gun on other guests. people inside the restaurant eventually were able to grab that man's gun. security might be on your mind as you travel for this july fourth holiday. you will notice more patrols and heightened security across the nation this holiday weekend. intelligence reports don't indicate a specific threat and there's no suggestion of an attack of any kind, but officials are not taking chances. there will be a large police presence at airports and large venues for the holiday. turning our attention to the race for the white house. presumptive democratic nominee hillary clinton's e-mail scandal continues this morning. she could have to face the fbi for her long-awaited interview today.

private meeting between attorney general loretta lynch and bill clinton. many speculate the meeting was about clinton's use of a private server during her tenure at secretary of state. lynch addressed those claims. >> the most important thing for me as the attorney general is the integrity of this department of justice, and the fact that the meeting that i had is now casting a shadow over how people are going to view that work is something i take seriously, deeply and painfully. >> now, lynch and clinton met on her plane in phoenix about a half hour. she says they talked about grandchildren, talked about golf. today's meeting with the fbi could take place at the clintons' home here in washington. it's being called the most progressive potential platform in the democratic party's history. a draft released ahead of the committee meeting in florida next week. the platform is a statement of the party's values. the highlights include that the death penalty should be abolished and no bank can be too bi

all right. check this out. passengers recorded a strange sight on a delta air lines flight headed to westchester county when a fog-like substance filled the cabin last night. airline officials say it was caused from haze from condensation, because there was high humidity in the area, and the cabin was cool. they say passengers were never in any danger, and the plane landed safely. this morning an 8-year-old maryland boy is still fighting for his life in a hospital on staten island, airlifted from a royal caribbean cruise ship thursday night. the boy fell into one of the ship's pools and was under water for eight to ten minutes before getting pulled out. the ship left new jersey and was heading to bermuda when that accident happened. you have to wait a little longer to become a

miles, and reached speeds over 118 miles an hour. she hit at least three cars before finally being pulled over. luckily, no one was injured. that young driver was charged and taken into police custody. she wracked up about $30,000 in damages. federal health officials expanded an already big flour recall. strains of e. coli found in gold medal, gold medal wondra and signature kitchen flour. this after four more people got sick from food poisons linked to the product. 42 people have gotten sick in arizona, colorado, indiana and oklahoma. no one died or developed the most dangerous symptoms from the e. coli infection. lots of people out celebrating his holiday weekend. today is the best day, we know to do it. >> a lot of people out on the water. before you head out on the boat, officials want to warn you about potential alcohol use. >> nbc's dan grossman explains.

karen garza's contract through june of 2020. the chair says dr. garza is an agent of positive change for the district. during her tenure, teacher salaries increased, class sizes reduced, and high schoolers now have later start times. a new law is in effect in virginia. people who want to sell or transfer guns at a gun show can request a criminally background check of the buyer. state police will be available at every gun show to conduct those background checks. governor mcauliffe kout touted law and raled on congress for not keeping guns out of the hands of terrorist. >> the congress could not even come together to stop people on the terror and no-fly list, in e couldn't even come together to put legislation forth to stop those individuals from purchasing firearms. are you kidding me? >> participation in virginia state law is strictly optional, and has to be agreed upon by both the buyer and seller at

over the next 40 years, the united states population is going to grow by over 90 million people and almost all that growth is going to be in cities. what's the healthiest and best way for them to grow so that they really become cauldrons of prosperity and cities of opportunity? what we have found is that if that family is moved into safe, clean, affordable housing, places that have access to great school systems, access to jobs and multiple transportation modes then the neighborhood begins to thrive and really, really take off. the oxygen of community redevelopment is financing. and all this rebuilding that happened could not have happened without organizations like citi. and citi has formed a partnership with our company so that we can take all the lessons from the revitalization of urban america to other cities, so we are now working in chicago and in washington d.c. and newark. its amazing how important safe, affordable housing is to the future of our society.
