good morning. you're looking at storm team 4 radar and there are raindrops all over the shenandoah valley and the mountains of west virginia. those raindrops are coming straight into the d.c. metro area over the next couple of hours. likely to have a big impact on all of your outdoor plans. i'll show you the timing of when it moves in and when it moves out. >> rain or shine, independence day parades are happening all over the d.c. area. we'll take you live to some of the biggest and the best. plus a 61-year-old woman from virginia hoping to break a reported on the tennis court today. the secret behind her success? >> it's one of the keys to keeping your stamina going. >>

>> who needs gatorade when you can have pickle juice. >> so did she complete the challenge? the answer ahead. news4 midday starts right now. first to your forecast, we are already, unfortunately, seeing rain on the storm team 4 radar. >> will it wash out your plans for the rest of this independence day? that's the big question. storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell has the answer. so what do you say, chuck, fireworks tonight? >> i'll they'll be able to get the fireworks in, but between now and fireworks time, there is going to be quite a batch of rain to come through the area. there's not much rain in the d.c. metropolitan area just yet. that's about ready to change. there's some moderate rain moving into culpeper as well. this is all marching its way eastbound so that leading edge of the rain will be on the east side of the metro and coming onto the west shore of the bay within the next three hours. by 2:00, all

will be covered. here's the back end of the rain. that puts the back end moving in around 7:00, 8:00 this evening. fireworks are expected to go off around 9:00 or a little later than that. it's going to be a close call. a lot of rain. most of the heavier rain will be likely between 2:00 this afternoon and 5:00 or 6:00 this afternoon and early this evening. so outdoor, rain moving in for the second half of the parade. a pool day, well, as long as you're playing billiards, that kind of pool. the fireworks wet, but we should be able to get them in. more about temperatures and how warm it's going to get coming up. right now roads around the mall including the arlington memorial bridge are closed until 11:00 tonight. there are closures along constitution and pennsylvania avenues for the national independence day parade. that parade starts in less than an hour, which means participants are lining up right now. >> so are the spectators. new 4's derrick ward is live along the parade's staging

the sidewalks are already packed with people, aren't they, derrick? >> reporter: indeed they are. this is where it all comes together, the part of parades a lot of people don't see. this is where you have a convergence of events here. in the foreground you see some of the floats and the hot air balloons that will be part of this parade. now, it kicks off at 11:45 but people are always starting to gather. it's always fascinating. you see the military groups start to form as well. it's also a time for socializing for people. people can take pictures with some of their favorite doctors like scooby do and looking at the tasmanian devil behind me. a balloon is being inflated and% the local bands and some of the bands from elsewhere that are involved in this are also here so always a big event. hopefully itil

whomever may have left it in the park. darcy spencer has more now on the victim and how his family is reacting to this accident. >> so to hear that news, it was like surreal. it still is, kind of like i'm in a dream. >> reporter: or more like a nightmare for this family. their 18-year-old grandson suffered a traumatic leg injury in central park in new york when investigators say he apparently stepped on explosive material. >> i hope they found what happened, who did it and to get anything else like that out of central park. >> reporter: connor golden frizz fairfax county. he just finished his freshman year at the university of miami in miami. he was in new york with a couple of friends this holiday weekend when it happened. >> connor spoke to his dad by phone, but he was very woozy. he said he didn't think it was a firecracker. >> kerry golden is connor's

leg from below the knee. >> my son is fine and hopefully it's going to work out for him. this is a life-changing thing for his poor young man. >> reporter: connor graduated from fairfax county last year. he's musically talented and enjoys rock climbing and parasailing. >> i get sad because i think does connor know what's happened to his legs? >> reporter: connor also became an eagle scout. it helped build his character and feed his love for the outdoors. >> hopefully between his parents and eagle scouts, he's got the character to deal with this. >> reporter: darcy spencer, news4. new information 30 minutes ago, in a shooting in northeast washington, police say the person who died is a 42-year-old man named omar lindsay. d.c. police say he died at the hospital. officers say they first found lisa

v and 3rd streets around 9:45 last night. police are offering a reward for any information on a suspect. new this morning, we're working to learn the name of a man who died in a rowhome fire. the anne arundel fire department said the fire engulfed the second floor of the building on brookwood road. they found a man up there but couldn't save him. a firefighter was also seriously hurt when he fell through the second floor. firefighter investigators say they are still working to find out just how the fire started. right now crowds are starting to fill the national mall. it's a busy independence day with parades and fireworks. we're seeing people pass checkpoints and begin celebrating. there is no shortage of music to check out on the national mall. that includes the smithsonian folk life festival. this highlights the diversity of cultures here in the u.s. and the traditions that are being kept alive. performances wrap up around 5:00. it continues through july 10th.

bragg. history made as the atlanta braves and miami marlins played the first professional sporting event at a u.s. military installation. ft. bragg, north carolina, the largest military base in the world. the game was played in front of members of the military and their families. also the first major league baseball played in north carolina. right now a fourth of july parade with a small town feel is under way in the district. this year is the 50th annual celebration in the city's palisades neighborhood in northwest. let's check in with news4's mark segraves who's live along the parade route. hey, mark. >> reporter: it is one of the oldest traditions in washington, d.c., and our time couldn't be better because we just got here and here is mayor muriel bowser. why is this parade so important to the city? >> it's a great family fun parade and it's celebrating 50 years of the palisades parade. it's going to end at the recreation center

the south lawn. there's a concert also. you're looking at video from last year when bruno mars was the big performer there. at the end of the day today, the guests will have prime seating to watch the fireworks on the national mall. and with the democratic convention just weeks away, hillary clinton is trying to put the e-mail controversy behind her. meanwhile, donald trump is dealing with a new controversy of his own. nbc's edward lawrence has the latest. >> reporter: hillary clinton wants to focus on narrowing down a vice presidential pick and attacking the republicans. instead, she met with the fbi for a three-hour interview as part of a probe to see if clinton mishandled classified information on her personal e-mail server. >> i'm not going to comment any further on the review, but i've been answering questions now for over a year. i've released more than 55,000 pages of my e-mails for the public to read for

took to the sunday talk shows to defend her. >> i think that there won't be an indictment. >> reporter: but republicans are still skeptical. >> i think she's disqualified herself from commander in chief by her cavalier attitude towards our nation's secrecy laws. >> reporter: meanwhile donald trump is fighting off another controversy. in attacking clinton over the fbi investigation, he tweeted what appears to be a star of david over a pile of money. the same image used a month earlier on a twitter account of a user who also promoted other racist imagery. the image was replaced. >> a tweet is a simple tweet. you can read into things that aren't there. this is a simple star. >> reporter: the anti-defamation league says it's long overdue for trump to publicly reject anti-semitis and racists. tuesday donald trump will be at a campaign event and will try to narrow down his vice presidential pick. also on tuesday, hillary clinton will campaign with president barack obama for the very first time in charlotte, north

washington. day three of metro's safe track program begins tomorrow. that means there will be no service on the yellow and blue lines between national airport and braddock road. metro will provide bus shuttles to help out but is already warning riders to expect reduced service at a lot of stations, especially in virginia. no track work on metro today but be ready for crowded stations. trains are running on a saturday schedule until 2:00 this afternoon and will ramp up to near rush hour service levels before and aafter the fireworks. because of the large crowds you cannot bring bikes or large coolers. metro bus is on a saturday schedule but expect detours around the national mall. if you're drinking, there are some free ways to get home tonight. you can call 800-200-taxi for a safe way home up to a $30 fare. >> it's only

we want people to use it. i'd hate to think anybody gets in a car after drinking that says they didn't know about the program. >> the washington regional alcohol program is partnering with nine local cab companies. more than 230 people took advantage of that service last independence day. now, even with the rain, most of the fireworks around our region are scheduled to still happen today at this point. you can find out about them and where to go and when they start. just go to the nbc washington app and search fireworks finder for an interactive map and locations. believe it or not, not everyone is a big fan of fireworks on the fourth. they can really stress out these little guys. we'll share what you can do to keep them happy during all of the fireworks shows tonight. first, the nba superstar people are talking about today.

the biggest nba free agent since lebron james is about to pick a team. unfortunately, there's pretty much zero chance kevin durant will come to the wizards. reports are saying that durant will choose between two teams, his current squad, the oklahoma city thunder, and the golden state warriors, who just lost the nba championship. those reports say that he'll announce his decision today and there are a lot of eyes on this. we'll let you know what happens when we find out. >> a lot of eyes are on this guy over here too. >> for a totally

reason. we've got a lot of rain we have to deal with, moving in about the next hour or two and will stick around the remainder of the afternoon before tapering back to just showers. hopefully just in time for the fireworks. but the weather is certainly going to have a big impact on your outdoor plans. moderate to at some times even a high level of impact. rain likely throughout the afternoon. on average about a half an inch, some localized spots could get upwards of an inch of rain but the rain should be tapering off after about 7:00 or 8:00 this evening. that remains to be seen. let's get it in here first and then we'll worry about getting it all out. for now it's all cloud cover over washington. 71 degrees with a south wind at 9 miles per hour. as you're going down the checklist of what you need to know about the weather forecast for the rest of today, grab the rain gear. steadiest rain noon to 6:00, hopefully breaking up by 8:00. i still think they'll get

evening, but it's going to be a close call. rain tapering back to showers after 6:00 and then passing showers around at 9:00. about a 40% to 50% chance of rain during fireworks. then as we get into the later evening hours, there's another chance for some rumbles of thunder overnight tonight. right now still waiting on the rain, we're in the upper 60s to near 70. radar scanning the skies here. it's rain-free on the capital beltway, but go out 66, get west in virginia and you start running back to raindrops. this batch of moderate rains coming eastbound. it's about two hours from getting inside the immediate metropolitan area so that puts it in here about 1:30. where's the back end of the rain that i'm watching? it's back here near charleston, west virginia. at the rate it's going, it's about seven to seven and a half hours from getting through here. so this

the needle for sure. just know that most of your afternoon if you're going to be outside next to the barbecue, it's going to be raining on you. here's future weather. 3:00, here's the moderate rain coming through. our computer model lives in optimism. look at that, it has all the rain out of here by 6:00. i have my suspicions that that may not be the case. i'm a little more pessimistic. we'll stay in the upper 60s and low 70s, but tomorrow after some thunderstorms in the morning, we get back in the sunshine tomorrow afternoon. temperatures will jump into the mid and upper 80s and the real heat of july settles in here for wednesday, thursday and friday, even with storm chances. it looks like we'll be 90 or higher starting on wednesday. i'll show you the ten-day forecast which has a lot more 90s following these, coming up. you might save some money on your next power bill. dominion power virginia cut its gas rate because of lower fuel prices. the average customer could save about $4.35 on their next

minnesota. >> and dad picked out the hat. >> reporter: oh, dad picked out the hat. >> and i -- and mom got the shoes. and mom got the socks. >> reporter: an early morning security sweep shut down the perimeter around the washington monument. officers used canine units to check the grounds. >> you will notice a heightened security presence. it's really not any different from any other day on the national day, but you'll see us due to the secure so did around the washington monument. >> reporter: but a bigger threat could come from above with heavy rain in the forecast. >> it may force us to delay the start or worst case scenario postpone until tomorrow. but optimistic that the forecast is turning and we'll have a great day out here. >> reporter: thousands are expected rain or shine for a day filled with patriotic music and one of the biggest fireworks shows in the nation. all right.

off without a hitch. we'll keep you posted on our nbc washington app and you can also sign up for automatic text alerts with the park service by texting july4dc to 888777. we're live along the national mall. molette green, news4. >> all right, thank you. we turn now to a developing story overseas. a suicide bomber carried out an attack near the u.s. consulate in saudi arabia earlier today. officials say the attacker blew himself up when security guards approached him near the parking lot of a hospital. the security guards were injured as well. everyone at the consulate has been accounted for at this point. at least 200 people have died in attacks carried out by isis in iraq. sunday's attack on a busy shopping area in baghdad is the deadliest terror attack since last year. 176 people were injured. iraq's prime minister has ordered new security measures in the capital as a result of this attack. and the terrorist attack at

an airport in istanbul is putting new focus on airport security in the u.s. with people flying over the next few days for the holiday and the rest of the summer travel season, the tsa is trying to increase the number of bomb-sniffing dogs at airports across the country. janet shamlian has a look at the training those dogs go through. >> reporter: to the dogs it's just a game, but teaching them to sniff out explosives is a new front in the war on terror and part of a way to keep long lines moving at security checkpoints. >> these dogs are extremely important just for the fact that they are already unbeatable when properly trained. >> reporter: at lackland air force base in texas, it's boot camp for canines. >> good boy. >> reporter: 17 buildings configured like an airport. dozens of locals hired to play the passenger. in this exercise there's an explosive hidden somewhere in this terminal and the dog's job is to find it.

tosca is among 250 dogs graduating this year. >> good girl. >> her nose is one of the most phenomenal noses i've trained here. >> reporter: earning deployment to an airport and the job. >> she knows what she has to do. >> yes, without a doubt. i'm just here to hold the leash. >> reporter: there are 900 canine teams like this one nationwide, with plans for more. how sensitive are the dogs' noses? the trainer compares a human and a dog smelling a burger. >> you say, okay, i can smell the cheese, i can smell the meat. the dog will smell the salt and pepper, the ketchup, the mustard and sadly if somebody spit on it, the dog could tell you somebody spit on that burger. >> reporter: bella is training in a mock security line. this time i've got the bag with explosives, and she knows it. >> i would trust this dog. i would fly

she's at with no problem knowing she's doing her job. >> reporter: as much as $25,000 to train each dog, it's an expensive program. but the cost, trainers say, of not using them could be much higher. janet shamlian, nbc news, san antonio. we go from the working dogs to pets at home and the fireworks that we're going to be seeing today, they can cause a lot of anxiety for our pets. >> they sure can. owners should know there are products that can help. trainers recommend putting things on your dogs hours before fireworks and if you don't have one, there are other options. >> giving them a cave-like area in your house. typically the best area is a bathroom because it has tile flooring and it's cool and it's an area that more often than not doesn't have direct access to the outdoors of the house. >> we have more tips and information on how to calm your dogs and cats down durihe

welcome back. we are only a few hours away from a moment nasa has been counting down to for the last five years really. their juno spacecraft is about to arrive in orbit around jupiter. that's at least 365 million miles away from earth. over the next year and a half, it will orbit jupiter and take color photos of the auroras, the clouds and its north and south poles so nasa wants to know how that planet formed and how it evolved. they're holding a news conference this afternoon to talk a little more about what thxp

>> that is so cool. space is just amazing. >> can't wait to see the pictures. >> technology works. >> it does, right? and your technology is probably working too well today. bad news. >> well, on the upside we've had a chance of rain on the fourth of july since way back in the middle parts of last week, so the rain on today's forecast is certainly anything but a surprise. yesterday was a little bit of a surprise. today, not catching anyone offguard at all. it's just a cloudy sky outside. areas of light rain pushing in. steadier rain likely to come in during the afternoon. heaviest rain between noon and 1:00 at the beginning up to 4:00 or 5:00 at the end of it. for this evening, cloudy skies and a chance anyway of continuing light rain during the fireworks. should be -- the heavier rain should be over but i can't give you the all dry. temperatures will be up in the low to mid-70s, that will be it. there's the leading edge of the rain right along i-81.

thousands of fireworks displays across the country after the sun goes down tonight but there's another reason why you should let the professionals run the show. chris clackum has the details. >> reporter: before you let the fireworks fly from the front yard, you better be concerned where those little fire balls land. >> we know that two out of five homes that have fires on the fourth of july are caused from fireworks. >> reporter: and you better check your homeowners insurance, because in general policies cover damage caused by legal fireworks. but if illegal, you might be in trouble. >> if you're setting out fireworks over the holidays and let's say a stray bottle rocket lands on a neighbor's home and sets a fire, you are going to be held responsible for that. >> reporter: laura adams says many insurance policies absolutely do not cover damage caused by illegal fireworks. and you could be stuck

manassas out here in northern fauquier county and that rain is moving on in. there's a little break in the action back here. this is our best chance to be try for the fireworks. as it's going now, it looks like this first wave of rain will be impacting the area between 2:00 and 5:00 or 6:00 this afternoon. here comes this first wave of maude roderate rain rushing on h but notice that little patch of dry weather there, not necessarily sunny but at least getting the rain stopped. that will get your hopes up just enough. as we get to 9:00 tonight, chances for more rain moving in. so it's going to be very touch and go here. last-minute call probably will be needed for the actual fireworks display. weather deteriorates after 9:00 or 10:00 tonight and we could have thunderstorms between midnight and 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. so some overnight rumbles are a real possibility. once we get the rain out of here after today, get ready for some heat. temperatures 90 or better dn
