until tomorrow evening. download our nbc washington app to learn about fireworks in our region. we're learning more about the blast in central park that seriously injured a teenager. an nypd lab is analyzing the explosive materials. the victim is from our area and got hurt yesterday after jumping off a rock in central park. darcy spencer has more. darcy? >> reporter: what we've learned within the past hour, officials are working to find out what that explosive material was. they say they don't believe whoever left it there in central park meant for anyone to get hurt. these types of materials can be made following recipes on the internet. 18-year-old connor golden remains in a new york city hospital with a traumatic leg injury. law enforcement sources say he was in central park sunday morning when he jumped off a

materials. >> what seems likely at this point is that we have -- i've referred to them as an explosive hobbyist or experimenter. there are people fascinated with this kind of thing and the fascination grows around the fourth of july. >> reporter: officials say it was not an act of terrorism and that whoever left it there was meant for somebody to get hurt. >> we would not categorize this as an explosive device. it was not placed there as an experiment for somebody to touch it or get hurt. not at all. >> reporter: connor just wrapped up his freshman year at the university of florida and graduated last year from high school in indiana. he enjoys outdoor activities and he's an eagle scout. family members say he had to have part of his leg amputated. his grandparents live in silver springs. >> it's unbelievable. because

and you're looking live outside our studios. our storm team 4 forecast is coming up. it was a rough night in prince george's county. rescue crews responded to several crashes on the indian head highway near ft. washington road. in one case, they became the victims themselves. bureau chief tracee wilkins explains how they stopped things from becoming much worse. it was accident

and unfortunately, firefighters were involved in one of them. >> they had just gotten into the unit prior to the car striking the vehicle. so they were fortunate that they were in a safe place when it happened. >> reporter: the fire truck was assisting while also parked to protect first responders. >> typically, we're taught that you're supposed to take the lane of the accident and one additional lane. >> reporter: a driver crashed into the front bumper causing thousands of damage. it could have been a tragic situation for emergency personnel on the scene. >> definitely protected the officers still operating on the scene. >> reporter: soon after that crash, the fire crew headed to another accident where two people were trapped and had to be transported. it speaks to how dangerous and busy this stretch of roadway is and how important this apparatus is. >> it's probably going to have to go out of service and

hopefully we can back it with another unit. >> reporter: the driver who struck the truck stayed on the scene and is now looking at charges. at 6:00, we hear about this with police officers all the time. how important the move over law is important for their safety as well. in ft. washington, tracee wilkins, news4. well, tonight a new group is preparing for metro's safe track surge at the same time that they go back to work but luckily phase three doesn't start until tomorrow night at 8:00. the blue and yellow lines will be shut down for a week. of course, any trains that are running are likely to be extremely crowded. >> well, looking over our shoulder, it looks like it's getting brighter. >> every time we turn around, lauryn, it is getting better and better.

now. >> i think we're going to be able to do it, guys. the rain is moving out of here and getting on the brighter side. we're going to keep the cloud cover around with the exception of areas south and west which may get sunshine. not a good thing because once we get the sunshine, the atmosphere is energized and we can have thunderstorms pop up. for the most part, the fireworks will go ahead as planned. all right. four things you need to know for today and tonight. steady rain moving in and out. a few isolated showers here and there and drizzle. as i said, we get sunshine and we could have a few storms. again, south and west. heavy rain overnight. we get another batch of rain moving through but it will wait until midnight and then push on through. we could have some flooding during the overnight with some heavy rain. we've got all of the moisture in the air. it's so humid out there. you may wake up tomorrow morning with flooded roadways and definitely dense fog to create low visibility as you

morning. current temperatures out there right now, low 70s. we've been in the low 70s for the last several hours. we'll stay in the low 70s as we continue into the overnight. you can see the rain moving on out of here. a few spotty showers here and there. that's what we'll deal with as we continue into the late evening. but that rain pushing to the north and east fairly quickly as we start to clear out here in the district. we'll be able to get the fireworks popping off. however, we'll have foggy continues out there. now, our next system you can see we're in between two systems right here. okay? so we're just seeing those isolated showers and drizzle. this will be the next system, that area of low pressure riding along a warm front. that will move into our region and, again, bring heavy rain. we already have thunderstorms. and even tornado watches -- or tornado warnings popping up around charleston. i'm not expecting any tornadic activity but, again, we could have stronger storms overnight. but what you need to know if you

fireworks in your community, light showers and drizzle. if we get sunshine, we'll see thunderstorms out there. not in d.c., i do believe, that we'll have to deal with isolated showers. there goes the rain pushing out of here and here comes more rain pushing into our region. again, i believe the heaviest rain will continue into the overnight but we'll clear out by tomorrow afternoon. and we're looking good on wednesday. wednesday will be the day that we start to warm up. in fact, into the 90s. first heatwave of 2016 on our doorstep this week. planner for tomorrow, 7:00 a.m., dealing with rain and thunderstorms out there. dense fog. and again, lingering showers through midday. more clear as we continue into the afternoon and into the evening. it's going to be muggy and hot. temperatures in the upper 80s tomorrow. we're back in the 90s towards the end of the work week and o

cancellations from other communities tonight. plus, everyone is still talking about prince george's county's own kevin durant. and a mother who says her child was targeted during a crime spree. that's first right now at 5:30. tonight, a grieving mother is calling for an end to the killing. >> it's happening in an alexandria neighborhood where four young men have been gunned down, two in recent weeks. the mother of the most recent victims plans to attend a community meeting wednesday night. julie joins us live from the rec center where police will meet with residents. >> reporter: well, just hours after being killed from here, police called for this meeting at the rec center and now the victim's mother plans to come here both with tough questions and an

for weeks now, patrice hall has been living a nightmare. early saturday morning, her youngest son was shot to death. >> i loved him. with all my heart. i can't even bring myself to go identify him. you know, to make funeral arrangements. i can't do that. >> reporter: gunned down in an alexandria neighborhood where four men have been killed in a year's time, this comes three weeks after a another young man was shot to death in broad daylight. it was that night that police broke through her door and said that her son was a suspect in clark's death. while he was never charged, she believes that the police raid put word out on the street. she believes he became a target, a target for retaliation.

word got out, this put him in harm's way, you know. he was a father of two young children and he was taking them on an outing the way that parks was killed. now she hopes her son's death will be the last thing this alexandria neighborhood, the loss of the young father, will wake others up. >> it will bring so many other people to the realization of what is happening in our world. you know, at some point in time, these young people have to wake up. life is worth living. >> both clark's and hall's homicide investigations are active. they executed

displays across the country tonight and there's a good reason why you should let the professionals run the show. nfl star delivers a powerful message about the importance of never handling fireworks. >> if you're planning to set off fireworks tonight, listen to this. in 2015, 11 people died and 12,000 people were treated in the emergency rooms all across the country. for injuries from fireworks. jason pierre paul was injured last july 4th while attempting to relight a fireworks. he lost an index finger, part of his thumb and had reconstructive surgery to save his middle finger. >> can we get in there? >> reporter: in new york city, an 18-year-old virginia teen lost part of his leg after he was severely injured in

authorities suspecting the explosion was caused by a fireworks. make sure they are legal in your area before buying or using them and never allow your child to ignite fireworks including sparklers which can burn at 2,000 degrees. don't buy fireworks packaged in brown paper. that's a red flag that they are illegal. keep a bucket of water or hose nearby. and never try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks. soak them in water and throw them away in a metal container. for a list of states that allows the types of fireworks, search fireworks on our nbc washington app. you may be skipping the national mall but you can catch the macy's

we had steady rain moving through the area but most has pushed to the north and east. thank goodness we can get the fireworks off as planned. we still have isolated showers out there and maybe a few thunderstorms. but nothing like the coverage that we saw through the mid-portion of the day. so we're looking at light rain and drizzle through midnight. the tail end of this storm still in kentucky. a tornado touched down in charleston, north of charleston, west virginia, from this storm and just about 5:15. so this is going to have a history of severe weather. thunderstorms and heavy rain overnight. i don't think we'll have that chance but again, rumbles of thunder not out of the question. rain continues through the morning before we get clearing in the afternoon. temperatures in the 70s. low 70s. that's where we have been all day and where we will stay throughout the overnight. all right. here's the leading edge of the rain breaking up over the northern portions of chesapeake bay and going off to the eastern se.

and that's the way it will be tonight. now, some of the clouds are breaking up and sunshine is coming south and west of d.c. if those areas get enough sunshine, they could have the ability to create thunderstorms. again, that rain is lifting out of the district. we'll just have to deal with isolated light stuff as we continue through midnight. this is the tail end of that storm, as i was talking about, in pink. they have flash flooding warning. again, with all of this humidity and moisture in the air, we could have some flooding concerns overnight. but until then, just light showers and drizzle temperatures and low 70s. boy, it's muggy out there. it's going to be foggy out there. we get dense fog. if we get any sunshine, as i said, we could have storms that remain west. if you're planning out your next 12 hours, light showers here and there and dense fog setting up overnight. chuck

morning as you make your way back to work. 7:00 p.m., the heaviest rain lifts out of here and isolated cells throughout the region. heavy rain arrived after midnight. this is 9:00, 10:00. there's the heavy rain overnight and it will continue to pull through here. we'll get clearing by the second half of tomorrow. sunshine and muggy. temperatures in the upper 80s tomorrow and then we head into the 90s with sunshine on wednesday. wednesday, whoo, on the warm side. we'll clear for the second part of the day and get the sunshine out. take a look at this. talking about heatwaves and humidity on wednesday, thursday, friday, saturday. in the 90s. and it's going to feel warmer than that with that humidity. we have a chance for your garden variety and afternoon thunderstorms on thursday and friday and we clear out for the weekend and have a few chances of storms. humidity
