>> reporter: if you're going to be driving around this area later tonight, be aware of the extra pedestrians that are out there sharing the road with you. jim, back to you. >> thanks. cities all over the country have stepped up security for this holiday. in boston, the police are monitoring dozens of surveillance cameras looking for suspicious activity. in miami, the coast guard is keeping a close eye on the water. and in los angeles. there is a noticeable increase in police officers and dogs. tactical units are working to prevent any potential attacks although there is no credible threat reported at this time. due to heightened security, there were frightening moments in new york city. a police lab is analyzing explosive materials that seriously injured a teenager from fairfax county. connor golden was injured in central park when he jumped off a rock and landed right on the

part of his leg amputated. nypd officials do not believe this is terror-related. they think a hobbyist who experiments with fireworks left the materials behind. more on the dangers and damages that they can do. that's ahead at 6:30. new develops tonight after a series of terror attacks overseas. there have been three different attacks in saudi arabia. as the muslim celebrates the end of ramadan. >> reporter: saudi arabia has been hit by at least three suicide attacks in three cities today. in the latest, the saudi-owned television network is reporting that a suicide bomber detonated his device

officers near the prophet's mosque in medina and killing at least two policemen. if that's true, that's very significant because it's the second holiest site, a place visited by thousands of pilgrims every year. this is the end of the holy month of ramadan. only the suicide bomber was killed and it's also significant because it has the highest concentration of shia muslims and isis has attacked there in the past. earlier this morning, what looks like an attempted attack on the american consulate in jetta, a suicide bomber getting to within 30 feet of the walls of the con

consolate and blowing himself up. the holy month of ramadan ending tonight. back to you. we are learning more tonight about the three men who were shot and killed over the weekend around northeast d.c. the first shooting happened at midnight on saturday near monroe street. we know the victim was a man named antwan mccullough. a few hours later, someone shot down john williams iii along 50th and brooks street. and then last night, omar lindsey was killed at third street. tomorrow morning, local parents will lead a march to the capitol pushing for congress to change the gun laws. they call themselves d.c. moms and dads for rational gun safety legislation and

a costly collision after a fire truck is hit by a car while responding to an accident. and new action being taken by the united arab emirates. this comes after a businessman was arrested in ohio mistaken for a member of isis. >> police say an explosion in central park was not an act of terror. >> the teen is still in the hospital with traumatic leg injuries. darcy spencer has details on what police are calling a freak accident. darcy? >> reporter: doreen, new york police officials are trying to figure out what the explosive material was. they don't believe whoever left it there wanted someone to get hurt. now, in our area, making this type of material is illegal

it was likely an experimenter or hobbyist with a knowledge of chemistry to manufacture the explosive material left in central park. this teen from fairfax county, connor golden, stepped on that material and lost part of his leg in the wlaft. >> quite frankly, we live in the information age and there's a great deal of information available if you know where to look for it on how to use chemistry to create explosive material. >> reporter: this is a spokesman for montgomery county fire. anyone who has that kind of hobby would be considered a criminal and would face arrest if they manufactured or detonated explosive materials. >> you don't know what you're getting. >> connor jumped off a rock and landed on the material which was in a big. the material is now being analyzed in a lab to determine exactly what it was. officials say they don't believe whoever left it there meant for

anyone to get hurt and it was not an act of terrorism. >> in order to test a larger amount, you have to go somewhere. that might your backyard. if someone lives in that sa sint, central park is their backyard. >> reporter: connor graduated last year from oakton high school, indiana. relatives say he enjoys rock climbing and parasailing and other activities. he was an eagle scout. >> it is unbelievable because i think of this active, young man, who was here for dinner last week. i mean, i love him. so to hear that news it was like surreal. >> connor's relatives say the incident happened one week before his 19th birthday. he had wanted a longboard for a birthday gift. they say this injury will change his life but they are hoping he continues to pursue his education and passion for music and the

thank you, darcy. residents in alexanderia's neighborhood is calling for an end to the killings. julie carey is holding us from the rec center where police will hold a community meeting. >> reporter: even before her son was killed here, she was aware of the violence. now in spite of her grief, on wednesday she will head into this rec center where she will pose tough questions and make an urgent plea. >> i loved him with all of my heart. today i can't even bring myself to go identify him, you know, to make funeral arrangements. i can't do that. >> reporter: struggling with the loss of her youngest

father of two children himself. 23-year-old sequan hall was gunned down where four men were killed in a year's time. hall's death comes after a young man was shot in broad daylight three weeks prior. police kicked into her apartment door to execute a search warrant that same night. she believes that police raid put word out on the street. she says lequan became a target for retaliation. >> when all of that word got out, it put him in harm's way. they had no proof that he had stopped pierre. >> reporter: luckily, president of the citizens association since the first of the four homicides since last july, she's

calling for more community policing and she's seen few changes. >> it's time for the community and the council to stand up and to say enough is enough. >> reporter: another neighbor who worked closely with police decades ago when crime was even worse said part of the solution rests with residents in the hardest hit areas. >> anyone who has information in whatever format they are comfortable in presenting it, please do because somewhere a mother is grieving. >> reporter: patrice hall will be at the community heating, too. she hopes her son's death is the last. >> at some point in time, these young people have to wake up. life is worth living. >> reporter: now, alexandria police are not able to directly respond to her allegations because they involve her son's homicide and that of clark's, still open and active. they tell me, however, there was more than one search warrant

two people were injured in ft. washington. two people in the car were seriously

the cause of the crash is still under investigation. and a fire truck was hit while trying to help stranded motorists. it happened near ft. washington road. bureau chief tracee wilkins says it's a good reminder to move over when you see an emergency vehicle. >> the car sideswiped the rescue squad here. >> reporter: last night, there were a three accidents in a matter of hours. unfortunately, firefighters were involved in one of them. >> they had just got into the unit prior to the car striking the vehicle. so they are fortunate that they were in a safe place when that happened. >> typically, they are told -- we are taught that you're supposed to take the lane of the accident and one additional lane. >> reporter: the driver of a third vehicle crashed into the

world. the orlando sentinel reports that the boy's father was attacked by a second alligator while he was trying to save his son. the father's injuries were so severe that he needed stitches but in an e-mail, the captain said the father refused treatment while he frantically tried to find his son. local authorities say they killed five gators while they searched for that little boy. this now is what is the most fascinating story of the day. the closest encounter yet with the biggest planet in our solar system. it's huge. we're talking about jupiter. nasa just gave us an update on its spacecraft called juno, which is heading towards an orbit around jupiter as we speak right now. juno has been on a five-year journey at speeds, if i remember correctly, about 150,000

an hour. it's now approaching the cloud cover around that big, giant orb of gas. today, nasa says it's going to fire the main rocket engine in hopes of getting it into orbit and then reveal to us a lot of things about the planet, more than we've ever known. we were hoping that it worked. there's a lot of gas and huge magnet t magnetic field around jupiter. i think it has a shield of some titanium shield of several feet, whatever it is. but even that may not be enough to keep it from being destroyed by jupiter. that's one bad dude up there. >> that's a gorgeous planet. juno is about looking beneath that surface. we've got to look at what is inside, see how it's built, how deep these features go, learn about it is real secret. >> they turned t
