launched as scheduled. what folks did to brave the wet weather and a brief security scare. an ice cream truck driver shot and critically wounded on july fourth. off the top at 11:00, the show must go on. on this drizzling and cloudy fourth of july. lots of fireworks shows and celebrations across our region happen on schedule. david is standing by with the biggest fireworks show in the area the one at the national mall. >> but storm team 4 has an eye on possible flooding for tuesday. lauryn ricketts, what do you have. >> we have a little break. but it was cloudy and foggy out there for the fireworks. hopefully you got a chance to see them in your local community or at the national mall but otherwise we have another batch of rain heading our way and oc

now. you could see downtown d.c. looking clear at this point. clear in terms of rain. we still have the low ceilings and the low visibility but scattered showers south down through the northern neck and heavier showers up toward frederick but this will continue to move toward the area and we'll see heavy rain. this batch of rain is heading our way and running into all of the moisture we have out there. and so heavy downpours and thunderstorms. we'll have to watch for flooding concerns. i think more isolated than widespread but there could be ponding on the roadways as you head to work tomorrow morning, going back to work. and then we start the heat wave. yes, heat wave. we're talking 90s. july type weather, not like today. we'll talk about that in the forecast coming up. >> thank you. the rain held off long enough to get the fireworks in on the national mall tonight. >> and david had a grew view of the show. it wasn't the clearest night for fireworks but did people still have a good time.

as you mentioned it was really cloudy out here. i heard one group describe it as a colorful thunder and lightning storm but put yourself in place for those who waited hours on the soggy national mall and for them the show went on as scheduled. making the drive in from baltimore, this family set up camp here. >> where else is better to watch the fourth of july fireworks than in washington, d.c. >> reporter: the wet weather not i deal, especially when you are four hours early. >> umbrella you and ponchos. two hours before the show and the family and others had to abandoned their tree-lined cover. police searched the portable bathrooms. someone reported a suspicious item, the all-clear given moments later. heavy security seen throughout. what we've come to expect. checking all bags. even in a soggy wait, dancing and a game

and the fireworks went on as planned in kensington. montgomery county sponsored the show at albert einstein high school which also featured life entertainment. >> here is what else you do, parades to celebrate the nation's independence. along mcarthur in northwest d.c. thousands came out for the palisades parade and picnic. across the river in fairfax, thousands more were out celebrating. and in d.c., the marine corp band led the capitol hill neighborhood parade. there were elected officials marching in all three parades today. >> it was fabulous. >> the kids and the fire engines were wonderful. always make you feel like a kid. >> love the cub scouts. >> i love the fourth of july. >> they managed to avoid the rain, which made for a lot of very happy people. an ice cream truck driver is in critical condition after being shot during an attempted robbery.

where his co-workers are demanding better security where they park trucks. >> reporter: friends and colleagues tell us the ice cream vendor had just returned to the lot, possibly early because of the damp weather when he was shot. police confirm the man was shot several times and they believe it was an attempted robbery. angry and concerned fellow ice cream truck operators gathered out side of the gates of the specialty distributors and watch police detectives examine the truck where the shooting happened. the vendors say they pay about $50 a week to park here and many have long believed the lot needs to have better security. >> anybody can come and get in and i'm a vendor here for 16 years, selling ice cream, we all carry cards. >> and we expect something like this to happen because the security system here is very poor

with money, everybody knows that vendors are out there and at the end of the day they come home with cash. >> reporter: because of the holiday we were unable to reach the owners about the security concerns. jackie benson, news 4. >> police believe a hobbyist is responsible for the explosive material in central park that severely injured a fairfax county teenager. connor golden stepped on the material yesterday and lost part of his leg when it exploded. montgomery county fire said anyone with that kind of hobby would be considered a criminal and face arrest if they manufactured or detonated an explosive substance, including homemade fireworks. >> anything that is manufactured or made -- homemade is dangerous and unstable, you don't know what you are getting. >> connor jumped off a rock in central park and landed on the material which was inside of a bag. investigators are analyzing the stuff right now. they

left it at the park meant any harm. there have been four homicides in alexandria west old town just in the past year. and now neighbors are demanding city leaders do something. we spoke with the most recent victim's mother who is calling for an end to the killing. >> i loved him. with all of my heart. today i can't even bring myself to go identify him. you know, to make funeral arrangements. i can't do that. >> reporter: patrice hall struggling with the loss of her youngest son, a father of two children himself. he was gunned down on saturday in an alexandria neighborhood straddling route one where four men have been killed in a year's time. this comes three weeks after another man was shot to death in broad daylight. it is that night when police kicked in her apartment door in the middle of the night to execute a search warrant. while he was never charged, she

believes that police raid put word out on the street. she said he became a target, a target for retaliation. >> the way they hound and come in here in my home and word got out and this put -- it put him in harm's way. they had no proof that saquan had anything here. >> reporter: the latest shooting has nearby residents worried. the president of the west told citizens association since the first of the four homicides last july she is calling for more community policing and has seen few changes. >> it is time for the mayor and the council to really stand up and to decry the homicides in the way they haven't and say enough is enough. >> reporter: another neighbor who worked closer with police decades ago when the crime was worst, say part of the crime rests with the residents. >> anyone who has information in whatever

rising gop star joni ernst who served in iraq and delivered her party's state of the union response last year. for any of the running mate short-listers, responding to trump controversy is part of the job. today more fallout over this design used in a tweet to criticize hillary clinton, derided as anti-semitic over the $100 bills and the same graphic appeared on racist imagery and trump campaign altered the picture and called it a correction but today trump said it was a dishonest media and could be a sheriff's star. hillary clinton said this image is part of a pattern that should give voters major cause for concern. trump issued a statement. no apology, into explanation of where he got the offending image but a counter punch. accusing clinton of trying to divert attention from the

there could also be some flooding, flash flooding concerns. but i believe that is diminishing little by little but i believe heavy rain overnight and definitely dense fog. so you are driving out and about overnight, watch out for at least some deer and low visibility. partial sun on tuesday, could have isolated thunderstorms but we have a heat wave coming our way. that heat wave is coming our way once we get into wednesday, thursday and friday. temperatures out there right now, low 70s. that is pretty much where we've been all day and that is where we'll continue to stay. we are seeing showers, heavier through montgomery and howard county. just isolated light stuff through southern maryland and through the northern shenandoah valley with more on the way. the area of low pressure that will continue to move through our area. so again it will run into the moist air mass that we have. and we'll see heavy downpours during the overnight. that is why i think there could be a flooding threat. and again definitely ponding

so 1:00, don't be surprised to hear rumbles of thunder, as you go to sleep tonight and tomorrow morning waking up early, there will be rain around. fairly dry for the morning commute, but again still soggy, still damped on the roadways. we'll have some road spray out there. we'll clear out through midday. but with the sunshine and temperatures in the mid to upper 80s tomorrow, we'll have a chance for isolated thunderstorms by tomorrow afternoon. and it is going to be hot and humid tomorrow. we are looking at clearing through the midday, isolated thunderstorm possible. definitely on the muggy side. so if you are headed back to work, the dense fog to deal with, cutting and low visibility. and then at the pool, hot and humid, put on the sunscreen. nats game, continue to watch the isolated radar with isolated storms for tomorrow. as we get to wednesday, man, it is warm and we continue with the warmth thursday, friday, saturday. yeah, three days of 90-degree temperatures constitute a heat

nasa's juno spacecraft entered the jupiter orbit minutes ago. it traveled for five years and trekked through 1.8 million miles to reach the solar system's largest planet. tonight the goal of the mission is to learn about the planet's secrets beneath the surface. they hope that learning about the history will help them understand how the rest of the solar system developed. that is so amazing. that that is even possible. >> that is pretty cool. so one more word about the ather we're expecting, lauryn. >> are you all ready for the heat. >> it is july in d.c. >> it is mild this summer. i barely turned on my air-conditioner at all. but i think if you haven't either and if i you are a -- you are along with me, tomorrow
