broken down vehicle that was in the left lane. we believe that may now have been hit unfortunately. authorities are headed to thestein on the toll road eastbound after hunter mill. in centreville out of manassas, 28 northbound near compton road. apparently according to the traffic center, they may have moved everything out of the roadway. that's much better news, 28 northbound moving to centreville. kristin and aaron, back to you. >> jack, thank you. it's 6:01. breaking news in northeast washington. we're working to learn more about a person shot by a metro transit police officer near the deanwood station overnight. news 4's darcy spencer traching this investigation. she joins us live. what can you tell us, darcy. >> good morning, aaron. we are right across the street from the deanwood metro station. here to my left is the deanwood rec center and community center. it appearance the scene is to the back of the recreation

street and minnesota avenue. minnesota avenue a very busy road here. it is open at this hour. korlt street remains closed off. police got the call around 11:00 last night, some sort of suspicious activity. when they got here, they found a person with a gun. we're told the person is a male. we don't have an age yet. we don't know if this was a juvenile or a man who apparently had a gun. as you said, metro transit police officer fired his service weapon, shooting that person who was armed with a gun. that person was taken to the hospital. we're working to get an update on the condition of the person who was shot. no word how they're doing at this hour. police are still here on the scene. we're not able to see any police activity from our vantage point because of those road closures. we're continuing to follow stories and we'll trito get additional details to update you later in the newscast. back to ou

new this morning, we're working to learn more about a big fire in silver spring. firefighters shut down norwood road near black high school for a while. it is back open now. the fire happened in an old abandoned farmhouse. montgomery county firefighters estimate the fire cost about $250,000 worth of damage. there was also damage to some nearby power lines. pretrial motions expected today in the trial of lieutenant brian wright from baltimore. he's one of the police officers charged in the death of freed dee gray. he faces several charges including involuntary manslaughter. two other officers have been acquitted. another trial ended with a hung jury. a prince george's county ice cream truck driver is in critical condition this morning after being shot during an attempted robbery. police say he was returning his truck to a parking lot on buchanan street around 5:30 yesterday when he was shot several times.

say they have long complained that that lot needs better securi security. >> what really we need here, has to be monitored or identified. that is not happening. >> at this point nobody has been arrested. police have not released any information on a suspected gunman. right now investigators in new york are examining an explosive compound that seriously hurt a fairfax county man. connor golden stepped on the home made explosive on sunday and lost part of his leg. nypd investigators believe the device was created by an explosive hobbyist and don't believe the device was left there in central park to intentionally hurt people. prepare yourself for metro's next safe track surge. it starts today and tonight and will affect the blue and yellow lines. train also not run between national airport and braddock

buses to help out, but not enough to carry the usual load. on top of that, fewer trains will run along the blue and yellow lines. we may also see the impact on busy roads on fairfax county like i-66 and i-95. metro says people who usually count on its service may have to drive instead for the next few days. this starts at 8:00 tonight. the surge three of metro's safe track program will also affect nearly a dozen stations. take a look at your screen here at the list. all the stations you see here will either experience closures, reduce train service or crowded trains. metro officials are encouraging riders to find a different way around during the next phase of its emergency repair work. our nbc washington app is a good resource to help you get where you need to be. open the app and search safe track. i'm mollet green at the live desk. 15 minutes into a fireworks show and something went wrong last night at the

massachusetts. police say a malfunction caused a fireworks barge to catch fire, setting off all the remaining shells. you can see the ball of fire in this video. no injuries reported there. two people injured in edmund, oklahoma at liberty vest at the university of central oklahoma. they were hurt after a pyrotechnics officer fired off a firework too low to the ground. weather caused several places in our area to postpone their celebrations. gaithersburg will hold off on theirs until friday night. frederick, maryland, postponed its show(qç until jul 24th. despite a little cloud cover, the fireworks show on the

planned. there were smaller crowds this year than years past most likely because of the weather. security was tight this year. there was one incident of a suspicious device in a bathroom but security cleared the area and determined there was no threat. this morning pbs is defending its broadcast of last night's fireworks on the national mall. the network ran footage from previous years showing clear skies and no scaffolding. they said, we showed a combination of fireworks from this year and previous years. it was a patriotic thing to do. for the best possible television viewing experience. you've got to tell people. put a little banner, something that says old stuff, file footage. >> nine to do that but people have to know that's what your intention is. >> people

delays. >> jack, thank you. 6:13. new developments this morning in the death of an american student in italy. police in rome arrested a homeless man earlier this morning. his body was found near the tiber river. he arrived in italy last week to spend a semester at john cabot university. wisconsin officials say they've accounted for all the other students in their study abroad program. the deadliest attack in iraq in more than a decade. an isis suicide bomber struck a commercial area sunday night as people were ending their daily fast for ram dachblt it faux follows bloodshed in saudi arabia on monday near the prophet's mosque and two other sites across the country including outside a u.s. consulate building. >> an isis move to reassert itself, to show its

that it's winning and not losing. on friday night 20 foreigners including three american students were killed inside a bangladesh restaurant. nearly 400 people have been killed around the world in the last four weeks in isis attacks. french lawmakers are calling for better intelligence following last year's deadly paris terror attacks. a report comes out today that's going to analyze what went wrong before the attacks. dozens of proposals will also be released that examine how to prevent it from happening again. people in west virginia celebrated the fourth of july by attend ag benefit concert to help those affected by the historic flooding there. west virginia native and "america's got talent" season six winner eugene murphy performed. he previously announced he would donate all sales to flood relief efforts. red crocs also collected donations from people that attended the

involving one of their fire trucks can teach everybody a lesson. on sunday night a car hit the truck when it was responding to a crash on 210 in ft. washington. the firefighters had just gotten back in their unit when the crash happened. firefighters say the truck's position protected police officers still working on the crash scene. it's a reminder of how important that move-over law is. >> we hope citizens can take that law a little more seriously to help protect us while we're protecting them. >> the crash caused about $10,000 in damage to the truck. the driver now faces arges. mollet green at the live desk with new video of this fiery scene in crafton. take a look at those flames shooting from this tractor-trailer. that fire at one point shut down southbound route 3 at sylvan drive. the road is now reopened to trucks. it was carrying orange juice.

happening today, as rumors swirl around virginia senator tim kaine being a potential running mate for hillary clinton, kaine is focusing his attention on the zika virus. he'll hold a roundtable this afternoon at 10:00 this morning in richmond. meanwhile researchers could be getting closer to a vaccine in the fight against zika. workers at a philadelphia lab say they're almost ready to hold clinical trials with human volunteers. those trials could begin in a couple of weeks. your family has a direct impact on your chance of contracting a staph infection. that's the main take dlaet away from a new study out of denmark. researchers found the link was stronger among siblings than among parents and their children. they say direct contact with an infected relative did not increase a patient's risk. knowing how many bites to take during a meal could apparently help you lose ht

researchers had a group of young adults wear a bite count device. people who wore the device ate significantly less than those who did not regardless of plate size. those with larger plates still ate more suggesting bite counts may not be enough to overcome the impact of large portions. today marks one month to the rio olympics. there's a lot of excitement surrounding the games that kick off on august 5th. we're also hearing of more problems. on monday sailors complained about an oil slick. it follows concerns about rise in crime, zika virus. military members did really well during a dramatic day in the u.s. track and field finals. you see air force pole vaulter kale simmons taking place. it was army reservist sam kendricks who catapulted into

into the crowd. the people who were hurt all had minor injuries. right now people in philadelphia are heading out on what could be a very rough commute. it's all because of this crack in the suspension beams on more than 100 of the city's train cars. the transit system took 120 cars out of service. that is about a third of all the rail cars on the system. the problem is going to cause major overcrowding this morning as people return from the holiday weekend. transit officials there in philly say they're planning to keep all the other trains on time. a long journey finally over. right now nasa's juno probe is orbiting jupiter. a lot of hot fives and cheering. it took the spacecraft five years to get there. you saw nasa engineers there getting excited when juno arrived late last night. now i

they're asking for lawmakers for new gun legislation. news 4's derrick ward live at lincoln park where the march will start. derrick, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, aaron. that march is due to get under way in less than an hour. they'll start gathering here at about 7:15. this is a group called moms and dads for rational gun safety. they have taken steps -- they're inspired by members of congress with a sit-in and the filibuster over gun legislation, gun safety legislation. this comes in the wake of the orlando shooting. what this group wants is universal background checks for all transfers of firearms, the end to the ban of scientific research into gun violence and they're also about protecting d.c. gun laws from what they call congressional interference, at least attempts to change t

going to be parents here as well as members of the city council. their focus is national in scope, but they're also honing in on d.c. specific situations on those congressional efforts to change d.c.'s existing gun laws. we unfortunately have members of congress from other places in the country deciding they want to use us as an experiment. it's insulting. we know we have to be on edge to protect against that type of intrusion into our local government and our decisions. >> reporter: opponents say what they are proposing actually makes it harder for law abiding citizens to have guns, and they will probably be there to sort of counter that argument later today. again, this march gets under way after a rally here at lincoln park at 7:15 this morning. that's where we're live. derrick ward, news 4. >> derrick, thank you. today a loudoun county man goes on trial

23-year-old demon they ellis is charged with killing his 9-month-old last october in leesburg. ellis told police the infant went limp while he was feeding her. the medical examiner says the infant died of blunt force trauma to the head. two children will grow up without their father after a murder in northern virginia. alexandria police say it's the fourth time this year they've investigated a murder in the west old town section near route 1. news 4's julie carey shot with saquan hall's mother. she blames police for investigating attention to her son while investigating a separate homicide last month. >> the way they handle it, coming here in my home and word got out. it put saquan in harm's way. >> other extension have a different response to the killing.

neighborhood's citizens soerks says city leaders need to take a stronger stand against the violence. in the race for the whousz the democratic party's biggest stars will campaign together for the first time today. president obama will join hillary clinton at a raleigh in charlotte, north carolina. it's the president's first appearance with clinton since his endorsement. you're looking at file video from her time as secretary of state. this comes after they try to unite the party after clinton's primary fight with bernie sanders. donald trump is in his search for a running mate. he met with iowa senator joan any ernest. that meeting comings after the presumptive republican nominee met with indiana governor mike pens and his family ov the weekend. trump will rally his supporters in raleigh tonight. montgomery county's nickel tax on plastic bags is having mixed results according to "the washington post." revenue from plastic bag sales went up over 3% in the

this might come as a surprise to nobody basically, apartments are shrinking. the ave. reaming size of a new apartment is down from a decade ago. rentcafe.com found the average apartment in the northeast is 856 square feet. in our area, the average studio was 480 square feet. one bedroom had 717 square feet. baltimore had some of the smallest rental units in the country. no word about prices is the thi thing. >> those aren't small. >> i can tell you, my one bedroom. they got me.

near a metro registration in northeast washington. both d.c. police and metro police were involved here. darcy spencer is more on the latest of what is happening. darcy? >> reporter: aaron, just within the last couple minutes, i was able to make contact with a metro spokesperson as well as someone with the d.c. police department. metro is only confirming one of their officers did shoot a suspect out here last night. they referred everything else to d.c. police. d.c. police spokesperson said they are going to get back to me with further information. we were not able to get further information from d.c. police this morning. this shooting happened about 11:00 last night. we're on quarrel street right by the deanwood metro station. just down the street from here is the deanwood recreation center. it looks like the bulk of the police activity taking place behind the rec center. there are road closures out here is

county man in new york city. with more, let's get to nbc's craig melvin live in central park. >> reporter: good morning to you, guys. i can tell you his name is connor goll done. his life was changed in an instant on sunday morning around 11:00 a.m. the explosion so loud folks blocks away heard it. they thought it was some sort of fireworks celebration. in fact, it was a fire work, but at this point police say it was some sort of home made firework. this was not terrorism, not anything related to that. at this point it appears as if some sort of hobbyist, someone experimenting with home made fireworks left the device in the park here. a forensics team is still working to figure out precisely what it was made of. we're told we should get results of that investigation, that part of the investigation at least. we're told we'll get those results tomorrow. mean while, a number of other fireworks mishaps
