that basically eliminates the major legal threat to her campaign. it could be the biggest, most contentious moment of the presidential campaign. the fbi decided not to recommend criminal charges against hillary clinton after investigating her use of a private e-mail server. >> the case has cast a shadow over the presumptive democratic nominee's campaign from the beginning. and while she may be in the clear legally, she's still facing public fallout. here's what fbi director james comey had to say a few hours ago. >> although we did not find clear evidence that secretary clinton or her colleagues intended to violate laws governing the handling of classified information, there is evidence that they were careless in in their handling of highly classified information. >> more than 100 e-mails containing classified information passed through clinton's private server and it's possible that people hostile to the u.s. accessed her e-mail account. >

not intentionally put secret information at risk, nor did she try to cover it up. nbc's steve handelsman is live from charlotte, north carolina. what kind of response are you hearing this afternoon, steve? >> reporter: chris, that's a perfect question because there they are, barack obama and hillary clinton campaigning together for the first time since 2008 when he beat her and neither one of them have said a single world about e-mails, about the fbi recommendation that justice not indict hillary clinton for her alleged bad judgment. president obama, instead, is side by side with clinton to attend her quest for president just five hours after the fbi director, yes, gave her good news but questions her judgment. president obama flew hillary clinton to north carolina on air force one. her campaign paying the cost of

state for the first campaigning together. but bigger news came from the fbi headquarters by director james comey. clinton, the fbi found, put u.s. secrets at risk using hand held devices with a private server but did not break laws on purpose and did not cover that up. no prosecution is recommended. >> we are expressing to justice our view that no judges are appropriate in this case. i know there will be intense public debate and what i can assure the american people is that this investigation was done competently and independently and justly. >> reporter: donald trump tweeted, "fbi director said that hillary compromised our national security. no charges. wow." she did not react today.

we're also hearing from people who knew him, that his wife is pregnant and he's an expecting father. prince george's county police want the two suspects off the streets. they don't have specific, identifying information but they are hoping that someone who knows who these guys are have hearding in about an attempted robbery at this ice cream truck will come forward and give them information that leads to their arrest. here now, the prince george's county police. >> maybe those individuals had knowledge that he was coming back at that location at that specific time or they were just going to randomly choose someone from the parking lot who had money at that time. >> reporter: now you can hear the prince george's county police still trying to figure out why this ice cream truck driver was targeted. was it random or was he followed by someone and then this attempted robbery happened? police are not sure if he was even given the opportunity to give the money

a deadly shooting just steps from a metro station. it was a transit officer who shot and killed a suspect last night. it happened on 49th street near the d station. mark segraves, what have you learned? >> reporter: things were pretty heated in northeast. there was a lot of action and fireworks. these are fireworks and m-80s going off last night we found littered throughout the streets and they sounded a

gunshots when they got off. police say the trouble started just before 11:00 last night. that's when the 911 call came in and metro police responded for the reports of illegal fireworks. when they got here, according to police, they found a man with a handgun. police say that man opened fire on police firing several shots at him and at that point a metro police officer returned fire killing the suspect. now, today the metro police officer has been placed on leave pending the outcome of the investigation. they say no one else other than the suspect was injured during last night's shooting. now neighbors here tell us there's a lot of crime in this area and they've been asking for police support in this neighborhood. coming up at 5:00, you'll hear from some of the residents and you'll hear what the metro chief of police had to say to his staff about this incident. reporting live in northeast, mark ra

pbs apologized as they wanted to create the best viewer experience and didn't know what the fireworks would look like with the weather. a lot of you and your friends were quick to notice that some shots were clear of clouds and there's no scaffolding on the capitol. social media lit up saying, "fake" and "shame." and only in d.c., can a fireworks show become a scam. a few cities suspended their fireworks. so college park lights off tonight and gaithersburg and solomon's island will wait until friday and frederick is waiting until july 24th and alexandria was already scheduled for

a dramatic and heartbreaking finish for the women's 800 meter final for the u.s. olympic trials in oregon. this is alisia montano who struggled finishing the race during the final 200-meter stretch. with this finish, she did not qualify for the games. she made international headlines by competing when she was nearly eight months pregnant. that was back during the 2014 national championship. that was painful to watch. wilson and williams did qualify and will be heading to rio. so heartbreaking for her. >> all of that work, all of that work, that

look, there's just one month to go until the opening ceremony. workers in rio are finishing up those last-minute preparations. promising everything is ready on time. he says a massive clean-up is scheduled to start july 15th. athletes should be able to have access to those venues a week later. rio is expecting more than 10,000 athletes and half a million visitors to these games. the opening ceremony is going to be seen on august 5th, right here on nbc 4. one of the major concerns about the olympics this summer is zika. now researchers say they are getting close to a vaccine in the fight against the virus. lawrence mayac has more. >> reporter: on this slide, it's the green patches to look for a. they are showing infections by the zika virus. >> so the bright green shows that it's infected? >

for the first time in two decades, a spacecraft is orbiting jupiter. it's been five years since the juno probe launched but late last night it slipped into orbit around the giant planet bringing cheers and applause from nasa's engineers. chris pallone has more. >> reporter: a journey of nearly 2 billion miles coming down to a crucial descent late on the fourth of july and then success. nasa's jupiter probe is orbiting the largest planet. >> and liftoff. >> it took nearly five yearo

fascinating story closer to earth. finally, we're going to feel more like summer as we continue into this work week. things are really heating up. temperatures are right around the 90-degree mark. we're showing the heatwave right now and we'll continue with temperatures in the 90s as we go into the early part of the weekend. national harbor camera not looking too bad out there. we have a few clouds out around the region. partly cloudy as we continue into the evening but we're looking good and heating things up. we're going to have daily rain chances. a few showers out there right now. the heat index is going to be over 100 at times. we continue through this week. the humidity and heat combined with the heat index and the humidity will thaw by the time we get into next week.

a college student from wisconsin has been murdered in italy and now his friends and colleagues are remembering him. a homeless man has been charged
