people who are without power in arlington, virginia due to possibly a transformer fire and right now it's the same thing that happened here in northwest d.c. a few hours ago. tonight, d.c. firefighters drove to the 1700 block after an under ground chance former caught on fire. there were no major power outages but fires like this are not unusual in extreme heat. >> it's very hot being almost nine months pregnant. we're ready to get in the pool and cool down. >> reporter: kelly and her daughter eleanor cool off at the charles houston recreation pool. >> it's a great bond experience. feels good to have the weight off and awesome the city provides a pool like this. >> reporter: the region is sweltering under a combination of heat and humidity. the heat index soared to near 100 degrees today.

generators. live here in northwest, d.c. pepco is prepared to handle any strain from the heat wave. the power company has extra personnel on hand and a few tips to help you stay cool for the next few days. keep your windows and doors closed while the air conditioner is on and make sure no furniture is blocking any air ducts or fans. we are getting a look, trying to get a look at some of the peaceful protests going on in baton rouge, but we can tell you a second video has emerged from that police shooting there and it's giving us a closer graphic look at what happened. a witness shot this new video from a different angle but alton sterling is already on his back. one officer straddling his legs, his right arm by his side. we can't see his left hand. we're stopping the video before an officer sees a gun and

[ cheers ] at a vigil tonight, protesters described him as a hard-working man, father that sold cds outside the convenience store to make a living. the owner says he's known sterling for years and joking around with him in the store five minutes before police arrived but sterling was convicted of drugs and weapons charges five years ago and as a convicted felon, it would be illegal for him to have a gun. the shooting is reverb rating around the country. in philadelphia police arrested demonstrators that disrupted rush hour traffic downtown. the justice department launched an investigation and protesters are demanding baton rouge's police chief resign. "the washington post" reported police officers kill nearly 1,000 people last year across the country. but less than 4% of those cases involved a white officer and an unarmed black victim. at the live desk, i'm chris

administrative duty over comments he posted on facebook today about that officer in the baton rouge shooting. those posts have been deleted but d.c. fire and ems tell news 4 norman brooks is now the subject of a law enforcement investigation and an internal d.c. fire review. he's been with the department since 2007. >> new tonight, alexandria police know who they are looking for in connection with the city's most recent murder. they think someone killed hall in retaliation for another murder back in june. news 4 jackie benson is alexandria tonight where people are angry about the cycle of violence in their neighborhood. >> reporter: the crowds needing twice as many people that showed up for a meeting last month after another young man was shot, also, in the same neighborhood. >> i've lived in th

batteries in them pose a risk of over heating and exploding. about 100 incidents have been reported to the consumer product safety commission. the recalled hoover boards were sold from june 2015 through may of this year. you can see the full list on our app, search hoover boards. a close call for a 7-year-old girl in virginia nearly hit by a stray bullet. police say the child got out of bed late last night because she heard a noise outside her window. that's when a bullet wizzed past her and hit the mattress she was sleeping on. >> there was, like, sounds and i didn't know what was it and then i told my mom what is it and she said maybe it's fireworks. >> fortunately, the little girl only had a few cuts on her arm from the broken window. police don't believe the shooter intentionally targeted the

tonight we head to a local hospital where intensive care now includes something so basic, so comforting that you might wonder why it's not a standard part of recovery. nbc's joe fryer on how it's a more friendly place. >> reporter: a hospital bed inside the intensive care unit can feel like a lonely island surrounded by streams of tubes and the relentless chirping of vital machines, which is why this might look like a cruel marage but really it's just what the doctor ordered. how do the patients react to the dogs? >> most of the time they are just really excited. you can see they perk up a little bit. >> this is princess. >> reporter: two dogs now regularly visit the icu at the hospital center. buddy a with a whisker to

looking good there. tomorrow's impact calling it a moderate impact and the reason is because we got all of this heat and humidity. drink plenty of water. take frequent breaks many you're working outside especially make sure to get inside with a.c. from time to time. you'll need that as you move on through the day. outdoor activities, workingout go for the morning. lunch outside probably too humid. not a lot of outdoor seating and outdoor work, drink plenty of water. now we got you on the red site. ten-day forecast red tomorrow and humid on friday and we do have a chance for some thunderstorm activity in the afternoon into the early evening. one or two storms may be on the strong side. saturday and sunday high temperature around 94. sunday 89 with less humidity. sunday looking pretty good and then monday not looking bad. high temperature of 87. so we go through this first heat wave of the season only to get
