good morning everybody. thanks for joining us today. we are following breaking news. 11 police officers have been shot, five fatally after what is believed to be two snipers in downtown dallas. it started as a peaceful demonstration over shootings in louisiana. gunfire erupted from an elevated position firing down on officers ambush-style. [ sirens ] >> one witness says she saw multiple police officers get shot. >> i was walking and the sniper started shooting and i just saw cops bending over, man. it had to be like five or six cops getting shot down. it was right after the rally. we were walking to the car. >> reporter: how many? >> i saw three. we were running. they kept shooting. we don't know where it's coming from but it was -- i didn't see anybody else get shot. it was just the cops. >> right now police say three people are in custody, a female and two people that had

mercedes-benz. a fourth barricaded himself in a parking garage and was exchanging gunfire with police. >> the suspect that has exchanged gunfire with us over the last 45 minutes has told our negotiators that the end is coming and he is going to hurt and kill more of us, meaning law enforcement, and there are bombs all over the place in this garage and in downtown. >> just in kxas is reporting that suspect has quote been neutralized. cal, a lot coming in through the news room throughout the night. tell us what you have seen. >> an

the targeters targeting the end of the march. they were working hand in hand. they were actually live tweeting the protest when the shooting sort of began. >> and the officers didn't have on their vests, right? >> yes. they were in a very relaxed environment. you can see them behind the engine blocks of cars, ducking for cover, running. we also know, and there's video circulating online, one of the gunmen circling around behind the officers and spraying them with machine gunfire which is why police say it was an ambush. >> so we know one person they say has been neutralized. if they were saying there were two that were firing ambush style. >> yes. two were

dez off of i-35. the third is a female suspect. they believe she may be -- >> would that have been the person in the mercedes? >> we don't know. we believe the female was arrested in downtown dallas but we are wait to ing to confirm. >> are they still working this as a possible active situation with maybe explosives. >> they are still work it as an active investigation. dallas police are doing this simply out of caution. they don't know if the gunman was telling the truth when he said there were explosives. people are being told to see which roads will be closed as police continue to try to clear the area. >> a lot of people work there and people being tol

don't. >> especially the federal buildings. they went into lookdown and they will likely remain in lockdown for the next day. and president obama, but the white house says he has been preefed on the briefed on the situation in dallas. he spoke about the shootings that prompted the dallas demonstrators. >> there is a big chunk of citizens that feel as if because of the color of their skin they are not being treated the same. and that hurts, and that should trouble all of us. this is not just a black issue. this is not just a hispanic issue. this is an american issue. >> we are livem

ron, do you expect the president to make another statement following the shooting in dallas? >> reporter: we certainly do. there is a place where the president was going to make remarks about what's going on here but we expect he will talk about dallas. obviously this is an issue that was of grave concern. his remarks yesterday were expressing his concern, how troubled he is by the shootings of armed or black suspects but clearly he was anticipating the pushback as well because he spoke out in protests like that. the president has been very mindful of the criticism he gets about not being supportive of them over the years. while no one has made this direct connection the timing of the remarks, troubling incident in dallas is unmistakable. the president

house has offered full support to the community and to enforcement but the president offered a heartfelt statement for law enforcement. the president yesterday talked about how he even believes and understands the danger they put themselves in. they have a right to go home with their families and just -- you can hear the sirens in the backgrou background. we are standing on the street corner. the bottom line is yes, the president is very concerned about the violence and very concerned about the assaults that happened and so we expect to hear a heartfelt statement from here in about an hour. >> thank you as that motorcade continues to go by and now it stops. nick of time.

the public's prayers and support and encouragement. i can tell you, i have never been more proud of a police officer and being a part of this great noble profession, seeing the courage, professionalism and just the grit to stay on scene in an area looking for suspects knowing that we are vulnerable. we don't know where they are. our downtown is very large with a lot of high buildings. some of the stories i heard about what happened about officers rung towards gunfire, to get injured officers transported to the hospital by patrol car, not having time to wait for ambulance and just so many stories of great courage. so we continue to fight the good fight to bring this to a

police that last suspect they were negotiating with has been according to police, quote, neutralized. thousands of protesters gathered after the police involved shooting deaths of two black men earlier this week. curt gregory reports. >> reporter: shots fired as protests over two african american males this week turned violent in dallas. at least ten officers shot with multiple fatalities. >> i ask everybody to focus on one thing right now and that is our dallas police officers, their families, those that are deceased, those that are in the hospital. >> reporter: a sharp contrast to the peaceful demonstrations in baton rouge for alton sterling. that incident captured on cell phone video is

questions and outrage calling for the officers to be charged with murder. louisiana's governor asked to keep the peace. >> now may be a time for demonstrations. it may be a time for protests but there is no time for violence. >> reporter: the unrest continue in minnesota where demonstrators held a vigil for philandro castille. it shows the moments after an officer shoots him, his girlfriend streaming it online. mark dayton called for justice. >> i don't think it would have. justice will be served. justice must be served. >> reporter: and protesters across the nation are making sure their voices are heard. it's not clear what happened in the moments before either confrontation and as two

waking up this news in dallas. ambush, five police officers are dead. >> we have team coverage of this deadly police officer in dallas, including a crew at the white house this morning where protesters gathered last night. erika gonzalez is monitoring the situation in dallas this hour from our live desk. >> first let's break down everything for you. right now, gunfire broke out around 8:45 local time while hundreds of people gathered to protest two deadly police involved shootings earlier this week. as the protest continued, snipers started shooting. 11 were shot. 5 died. one civilian was hurt in the gunfire. three suspects was arrested. a fourth suspect died inside a stand-off in a parking garage. let's get a

we'll have much more as this story continues to develop throughout the morning. they let there about an hour and a half ago but haven't held a news conference since then. we'll be checking back with them in a few minutes. at this hour, we know four suspects in the shooting have been neutralized. the last one in a stand-off with police in a parking garage in dallas. police say that person is dead. there was a manhunt for three others who were now in custody. a woman was taken into custody at the same time -- is he same parking garage, police caught two others during a traffic stop. this was a peaceful protest in dallas before the shots rang out last night. we have video of the moments when things began to fall apart. a warning, you will hear gunshots.
