we've got the far right side of the roadway open on the right side. the vehicle is overturned. inner loop of the beltway as you head northbound out of tyson into mclean. stay on the right side of the beltway. we're in pretty good shape. all your travel lanes are early and available. we continue to monitor the situation in dallas, texas, as has been mentioned, 11 police officers were shot. five of them dead. after a peaceful night of protests and gunfire began to rain down from atop the downtown area there in dallas, texas. as we know it, threeeople have been taken into custody and a fourth suspect that engaged in gunfire with police is now dead. we understand in that individual had told police negotiators, quote, the

place in this garage and downtown. as a direct result of that, police have gun what they call expensive sweeps of the downtown area for explosives that are underway right now and that, of course, will take some good time to go through. we have also heard that there are in fact two suspicious devices in the downtown area. that they are looking into as well. a number of individuals were sheltered at a nearby bus station and were there for some six, seven hours are just being let out, so that they can head home after what has been a tremendous traumatic evening in downtown dallas. this was a peaceful protest in dallas before the shots rang out last night. we have video of the moments when things began to change. a warning, you will hear gunshots. taillight when he was shot by a police officer. the aftermath was captured by his girlfriend and straemed live on facebook. in that video, they said castile was shot several times while reaching for his license but he had told officers before the shooting that he had a gun in the car. black lives matter! >> in our area, hundreds of protesters gathered outside of the white house to demand change. demonstrators have peacefully marched to the capital. let's go to megan mcgrath who is live at the white house with protests around our area. >> reporter: the shooting in dallas has sent shock waves through the police community not just here but nationwide and police officers are reacting. metro transit police in our area sent out a tweet overnight saying words fail us. we cannot begin to express the horror, the sadness we feel watching events in dallas.

happened during a peaceful protest. that's when snipers appeared out of nowhere and began to target police there. now, such demonstrations against recent police shootings were happening around the country last night, including here in the district of columbia. take a look. a large crowd gathered at the white house yesterday in a peaceful demonstration. they walk down pennsylvania avenue to the u.s. capital. some protesters did break through a police barricade but there was no violence. one person was taken into custody for crossing a police line. now, another peaceful protest is scheduled for tonight. this time in front of the justice department. people are expecting to gather at 5:00 and begin marching at 6:00 tonight, but no doubt what happened in dallas, all of lives that were lost there, will be on the minds of many. back to you in the studio. what do we want? >> justice!

dozen people have been arrested in philadelphia. protesters blocked the entrance and exits to a highway last night. at least 40 people were arrested in new york city last night. take a look at the scene here. you can see hundreds of people marched and chanted through traffic in times square. police later ordered them to clear the roads. a peaceful protest in atlanta as hundreds of people gathered in a downtown park there. some protesters pushed through police lines later in the night. at any moment we expect president obama to speak about the shootings in dallas. he's in poland this morning for his final nato summit. just a couple of hours before the violence in dallas, the president spoke yesterday on the deadly police shootings in minnesota and louisiana. >> this is not just a blackish. it's not just an hispanic issue.

government will provide whatever assistance dallas may need as it deals with this tremendous tragedy. we still don't know all the facts. what we do know is that there has been a vicious, calculated and despeckable attack on law enforcement. police in dallas were on duty during -- doing their jobs, keeping people safe during peaceful protests. these law enforcement officers were targeted, and nearly a dozen officers were shot. five were killed. other officers and at least one civilian were wounded. some are in serious condition and we're praying for their recovery. as i told mayor rawlings, i believe that i speak for every single american when i say that we are horrified over these events and t

with the people and the police department in dallas. according to police, there are multiple suspects. we will learn more undoubtedly about the twisted motivations, but let's be clear, there's no possible justification for these kind of attacks or any violence with law enforcement. the fbi is already in touch with the dallas police and anyone involved in these sensele murders will be held fully accountable. justice will be done. i will have more to say about this as the facts become more clear. for now, let me just say that even yesterday i spoke about our need to be concerned as all americans about racial disparities in our criminal justice system. i also said yesterday that our ol

difficult job and the vast majority of them do their job in outstanding fashion. i also indicated the degree to which we need to be supportive of those officers who do their jobs each and every day protecting us and protecting our communities. today is a reminder of the sacrifices that they make for us. we also know that when people are armed with powerful weapons, unfortunately, it makes attacks like these more deadly and more tragic and in the days ahead we're going to have to consider those realities as well. in the meantime, today, our focus is on the victims and their families. they are heartbroken. the entire city of dallas is

and let's good to megan mcgrath live in front of the white house with more on the protests planned for today. >> reporter: certainly there is a lot of sadness and concern among police officers here and around the country. this is a very tight-knit community and their colleagues were targeted, killed while doing their jobs. now, president obama just a short time ago spoke from poland saying that he was horrified by the shooting and said that there is no possible justification. now, the snipers who attacked in dallas made their move during a peaceful demonstration against recent police-involved shootings in louisiana and minnesota. there were similar peaceful protests across the nation last night, including here in the district of columbia. you can see the video here. protesters gathered at the white house yesterday evening. they then walked down pennsylvania avenue to the u.s. capitol. at one point last night some of the protesters did break through

april to avoid interfering with the fbi's inquiry. this could be a big turn in decision 2016. democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders is expected to endorse presumptive nominee hillary clinton next week. it's expected to happen in new hampshire on tuesday. sanders is expected to endorse her and will come at the end of the democrats primaries. the vermont senator has yet to suspend his campaign. republican side, new jersey governor chris christie will be joining donald trump on the campaign trail today. trump is headed to miami. to deliver a speech his aides have titled succeeding together. christie is one of the people being vetted as his vice-presidential pick. along with former house speaker newt gingrich and indiana governor mike pence. it could be next week before we learn the outcome of a class action lawsuit brought by a virginia republican delegate. to the national convention.

want to vote for donald trump. according to virginia state law, he and other gop delegates are required to vote for the winner of the state's primary. virginia attorney general, a democrat, mark herring is defending the state law saying corell knew the rules when he became a delegate. happening today, there is a preliminary hearing for a woman accused of luring children with ice cream and popcorn into her apartment and then sexually assaulting them. 42-year-old larona steel is facing five counts of child sex abuse. the victims are three boys, 12, 13, 15. according to the police report, she made them perform sex acts upon her in her apartment on clay place in northeast. >> one of boys took video of the other two. she also allegedly offered $20 for them to come back and have sex with her again. police are

more about one of the victims. >> five police officers are died from this shooting. we're working to find out as much as we can about them. at this point, we have one name. officer brent thompson. the dallas area rapid transit officer was killed in last night's attack. he was 43 years old. he joined the force back in 2009. he's the first officer they have ever had killed in the line of duty. three other dart officers were injured in the shooting. four others were killed. for the first time we're hearing from the girlfriend from the man police shot earlier this week outside minneapolis. diamond reynolds was riding with philando castile. she said during that stop, he told police he had a license to carry a firearm and that he was carrying a weapon. reynolds says when her boyfriend
