school. more now on that breaking news in dallas where protest there was marched by a gunman who targeted police officers. one of the suspects is dead. >> covering all angles of this story for you with team coverage. we'll begin with news 4's erika gonzalez at the live desk with what we're learning about this ambush. >> around 9:00 last night, those peaceful protests taking place in downtown dallas were interrupted by an ambush attack. this is some amateur video from folks that were a few stories up from ground level, and you are hearing them verbally call out the officers down on the street of downtown dallas. but the targeted attack didn't just come from above. police are saying there were two different perches where snipers are aiming down on li

attack to show you. i'm going to pause for a second. so you can hear this. [ sirens ] [ gunshots ] >> in all, three suspects are in custody this morning and we understand that one suspect is dead after engaging in gunfire with police. why they chose to target police at this peaceful protest we do not know. dallas police believe it was the shooters intention to injure and kill as many officers as possible. one of the most chilling eyewitness accounts is what you'll hear now. >> we was running. they kept shooting. i don't know where it's coming from. but it was every -- i didn't see anybody else get shot. it was just the cops. nobody else was shot. >> we're also being told that two suspicious devices have been found in the

area. for that very reason they are doing some very arduous sweeps in that area. we know a bus station that was nearby that was a place of refuge for dozens of people during this attack, the individuals there have been told to go home. that area now being blocked off and is a very extensive crime scene. again, after police officers were shot and killed, after peaceful protests began in downtown dallas last night. back to you. after the shots rang out last night, family members of law enforcement in dallas rushed to area hospitals. the father of one of the injured officers spoke to our sister station in dallas about his daughter's condition. >> something happens, you think the worst of it, you are just relieved when you walk in there and you see she's going to be okay and they told us exactly what happened and everything and she was going to be fine.

five officers are dead. as we've reported, the protesters took to the streets in dallas to voice their anger and frustration over the deadly shootings of two blackmen by white police officers. philando castile was killed during a traffic stop in minnesota and alton sterling was killed outside of a convenience store in louisiana. >> hundreds gathered outside of the white house to command change. we continue our team coverage with megan mcgrath live outside of the white house. >> reporter: the mass shooting in dallas has sent shock waves through the police community, law enforcement community, very close-knit, tight knit and the loss of these officers in dallas being felt very deeply. overnight, metro transit police sent out a tweet saying words fail us. we cannot begin to express the horror, the sadness we feel watching events

now the shooting in dallas happened during a peaceful protest. that's when snipers appeared out of nowhere and began to target the police officers that were there at that event and such demonstrations against recent police-involved shootings were happening around the country last night, including here in washington. a large crowd gathered at the white house yesterday in a peaceful demonstration. they walked down pennsylvania avenue to the u.s. capitol. now some protesters did break through a police barrier, but there was no violence. only one person was taken into custody for crossing a police line. now, another protest is scheduled here in the district for later on tonight. it's going to be happening in front of the justice department. people have been told to gather there at 5:00, and that they will begin to march at 6:00 this evening, but you can imagine that folks involved in the protest as well as the officers who will be overseeing it will have the fallen officers in

dallas on their minds. back to you. 8 minutes after the hour. first of the deadly shootings involving a police officer happened on tuesday in baton rouge, louisiana. cell phone video captured two officers handling and at least one of them shooting and killing 37-year-old alton sterling outside of a convenience store. we don't know what led up to that shooting but police say they were responding about a complaint about a man threatening people with a gun. the justice department is investigating that shooting. wednesday, a minnesota man was shot and killed during a traffic stop. officials say he was pulled over for a broken taillight when he was shot a police officer. the aftermath was captured by cast teal's girlfriend and streamed live in fib. she said he was shot several times. he had told officers before the shooting that he had a gun in the car. these police shootings are the top story on our nbc washington app this morning. you can open the app for the latest information. our other big storyight now, the heat w

these incidents. molette, good morning. >> i had a chance to speak with a longtime police officer just a few minutes ago about this situation. he couldn't of course comment on the situations going on in dallas, minnesota, and louisiana, but he believes that law enforcement and the community have to close this divide. watching these disturbing videos, they are out there for people to just see over and over again and the hardest part, he tells me is helping young people who have so many questions about their reality. officer arthur douglas started beat the streets eight years ago. >> this program beat the streets d.c. provides opportunities for individuals to come out and also breathe as they call it. they get a chance to enjoy their neighborhood, and also they receive different services. >> and they do that with officers and the community in a situation that is relaxed.

d.c. police department funding and they are having an event today at 2:00 this afternoon in the deanwood community, at the deanwood rec center cht that neighborhood just recently experienced an officer-involved shooting. that one involving a metro transit police officer. it's difficult to think about the emotions with the image of the scene and the shoot out circling this morning. you are looking at a sad moment. dallas police saluting their fellow officers at a hospital there. we know that four dallas police officers and one dallas area regional transit officer have died. the shootings there in dallas rarveg as one of the deadly attacks on american law enforcement in the past century. we looked at some data. the deadliest attack is still september 11th, 2001. 72 law enforcement officers lost their lives

[ gunshots ] >> that's the sound of d.c. police firing their weapons at a man, 63-year-old sherman evans who later died. police say evans pointed a gun at them in a stand-off ensued in june. the gun later turned out to be a bb gun but d.c. officials say the officer followed protocol. >> how our officers respond and engage with the suspect before making the decision before making deadly force. that is a marked difference when you look at this video versus the videos being talked about nationally for the police involved shootings in minnesota and louisiana. >> union officials

have finished sweeping this downtown area for explosives and have found none, but as you can see behind me much of the downtown area remains on lock down. this all started as you've been reporting before 9:00 last night loebl time when many gunshots were heard and police say at least two snipers were elevated above the ground and started targeting police officers. at least five officers are dead. six others are injured. three suspects are in sudden and it was a very stunned confusion throughout the night as the stand-off with this one suspect which was -- the person was cornered inside this parking garage. it all ended just about 2:25 local time. there were reports of the suspect was dead. now the investigation, the massive investigation under way, after the largest and the deadliest attack on

back to you. thank you. look for more from gabe from the scene coming up on the today show. president obama spoke about the violence in dallas earlier this morning. he called the killings a vicious, despicable calculated attack on law enforcement. at this point it's not clear what kinds of weapons the snipers used in the attack. the president suggested the suspects never should have had the guns they had in the first place. >> when people are armed with powerful weapons, unfortunately, it makes facts like -- attacks like these more deadly and more tragic and in the days ahead we're going to have to consider those realities as well. >> the president is in poland for his final nato summit. other leaders expressed their condolences before the president addressed the press. at this point we know the identity of one of the five officers who was killed overnight. this is 43-year-old officer brent thompson. he join the dallas area rapid
