peaceful protest was ending. >> the suspects had sniper rifles and both investigators and witnesses say they're targeting police. >> reporter: yeah, that suspect killed by police overnight after a sniper shooting at officers here from elevated areas like this parking garage right behind me that is still blocked off boy police, as you can see. for now, dallas police say they are not giving away too much information, because this is a very active investigation. they're worried mainly about safety. much of downtown dallas remains a crime scene after a night of horrific violence aimed at police officers. in a coordinated ambush-style attack, a sniper perched in an elevated position opened fire on police. >> just started shooting. like all of the cops. i just saw cops bending over, man. it had to have been like five or six cops, like they was all getting shot down. >> reporter: it happened near

overrecent police shootings. when it was over, five officers killed, seven others wounded. >> we're heartbroken. >> reporter: police immediately rushed toward the gunfire and cornered the gunman. >> you see video footage after video footage running toward gunfire from an elevated position with no chance to protect themselves. and to put themselves in harm's way to make sure citizens can get to a place of security. >> reporter: after a lengthy standoff, police used a controlled explosive to kill the suspect. >> we've been trying to make sure that the city is safe this morning, and i believe it is. >> reporter: the gunman told police he acted alone and was angered by recent police shootings. in a poignant show of solidarity, police formed an honor line outside the hospital where the victims were taken. >> i believe that i speak for every single american when i say that we are

events and that we stand united with the people and the police department in dallas. >> reporter: as dallas and the entire nation grieves over this national tragedy. and police have now released the name of that gunman, 25-year-old micah xavier johnson. we're told he is from the dallas area. again, the police chief says they're being very cautious with what they release about the suspects because of the possibility that more people could be involved. now, the police chief says if that's the case, he will not rest until everyone is found. reporting live in dallas, sarah rosario, nbc news. a sad moment caught on camera here. dallas police saluting their fellow officers at the hospital overnight. last night's ambush was the deadliest attack on law enforcement since 9/11. that's according to statistics from the national law enforcement officers memorial fund. 71 law enforcement officers died responding to the 9/11 ck

died overnight. we are beginning to learn more about the officers who were killed in that ambush attack. brent thompson was a seven-year veteran of the dallas area rapid transit agency. he was 43 years old and was married within the last two weeks. he also worked as a military contractor in iraq and afghanistan. thompson was the first dart officer to be killed in the line of duty in the agency's 27-year history. the four other victims of dallas police officers. we are working to get more information on those officers, plus we will send you the latest on the investigation on the nbc washington app. president obama called the violence in dallas a, quote, vicious, despicable, calculated attack on law enforcement. he spoke from poland where he arrived yesterday for his final nato summit. leaders with him at a news conference about 30 minutes ago expressed their condolences before the president addressed the press.

every single american when i say that we are horrified over these events and that we stand united with the people and the police department in dallas. >> the president went on to describe the killings of police as senseless murders. new reaction this morning from the two presumptive candidates for president. donald trump tweeted his condolences this morning. just a few hours ago he cancelled his campaign events in florida today in light of the shootings. hillary clinton also tweeted her condolences. she postponed an appearance with the vice president in pennsylvania. now, the shootings happened at the tail end of a peaceful protest about police brutality following two deadly shootings of black men by white police officers earlier this week. at pretty much the same time, a similar protest was happening right here in the district. this was megan mcgrath is live at police headquarters with what activists are saying and what's next.

>> reporter: well, police chief cathy lanier says her officers are naturally upset. the protest here in the district last night was peaceful, but of course that was not the case in dallas. with additional protests scheduled over the coming days, they're taking precautions. but the bottom line here is that chief lanier says they have a job to do and they're going to do it, just like any other day. what began as a peaceful protest in dallas turned into a sniper-style attack on police. here in the district, cops are taking extra precautions, patrolling in twos until further notice. precautions are also being taken at department facilities. >> we have increased our security around our facilities and our lots. so really just to try and continue to stay on our toes and do our job is a big thing for us. >> reporter: protests in response to recent officer-involved shootings took place across the country last ni

demonstrators gathered outside the white house and made their way to the u.s. capitol. deandre moore was at the front of the peaceful march. he's saddened of the mass shooting and stressed the importance of nonviolent protest. >> i know we say black lives matter but we can't forget about them. not all cops are the same. we have a few bad ones just like a few bad people everywhere but you can't blame one demographic for what they do. we cannot continue to act with violence. it's not going to work and the problems won't be solved. >> reporter: chief lanier says there were roughly six or seven protests that are scheduled here in the district in the coming days, and she says that her officers will be alert as they always are, but she doesn't expect any problem. reporting live from police headquarters, megan mcgrath, news4. dozens of people are in custody after other peaceful protests around the country this

arrested 40 people last night. officers say most of the arrests came when they asked protesters to clear times square. at least 12 people face charges after protests in philadelphia. demonstrators there marched through downtown earlier this week and blocked the entrance and exits to a highway during rush hour. a relatively peaceful scene in atlanta. we're not hearing of any arrests there, after hundreds of people gatheredo protest in a downtown park. some protesters pushed through police lines and caused brief delays on area roads. in light of the dallas protests, the president is calling on communities to work better together. he urged police departments to adopt recommendations from his task force on 21st century policing. the group formed in late 2014 after the deaths of michael brown in ferguson, missouri, and eric garner in new york. a long-time d.c. police officer started a similar community policing program here. he told us this morning about be

we're getting that nice north wind 10 miles an hour, but the humidity is still out there. what you need to know for today, once again that heat index or feel-like temperature is right around 100 degrees. we will have a better chance of some showers and thunderstorms. now, we haven't seen them the last couple days but it looks like some of those could be severe. the weekend looks fantastic. we'll talk about the weekend and let you know when the humidity breaks coming up. it is back to normal after a security scare this morning at the capitol. police locked down the building itself and the visitors center for about 30 minutes after reports that a woman snuck through a security checkpoint with something that looked like a gun. the house quickly took a recess during that lockdown. it's not clear what resolved it, but police lifted the alert around 9:40 this morning. chopper 4 captured these images. fire crews on the scene of an early morning house fire in manassas park. fire investigators are now trying to figure out what caused that fire that broke out just after :3

a search of the home found no one inside. part of foxhole road in northwest d.c. is closed right now and could be closed for a while. the closure is between w and dexter street. a tree came down, taking down power lines as well. crews are on the scene working to get the road reopened. police from around the country are reaching out to the officers and people of dallas this morning. our coverage of this developing story continues throughout the newscast. after the break we talk to a former d.c. police officer who knows about the safety concerns facing officers today. we'll also ask him about the risks of big protests, which are familiar in this area.

we have some breaking news. senior law enforcement officials tell nbc news that they have ruled out any connection to terrorism in the dallas shootings. federal investigators were looking into whether there were any ties between the shooter and shooters, and domestic extremist groups, but again, law enforcement officials telling nbc news there is no connection to terrorism at this point. the investigation continues and we'll bring you the very latest on news4 and on nbcwashington.com. police and law enforcement around the country are expressing support for the dallas police department and dart, the transit police right now. that includes several in our a.

said they are shrouding their badges in honor of the officers who died. metro transit police said they couldn't express the horror and sadness they're feeling about the shootings last night. howard county police wrote a stirring message. it says, quote, our hearts are broken for dallas not just as police officers, but as people. as the outpouring of support for dallas continues, police around the country are also thinking about their own safety. >> we're joined by retired d.c. police officer and security expert, dwayne stanton, to talk about how incidents like this impact police officers. we appreciate you coming in today. >> thank you for having me. >> we heard police chief cathy lanier she decided every officer will work in pairs for the foreseeable future. >> absolutely. >> what's the thinking there? >> there's safety in numbers. as you can see what happened last night in dallas, these four officers were ambushed execution-style. so we don't want officers out there in the street by themselves. at least the chances increase of

there with you, to assist you or call for assistance. >> they were wearing their regular service uniforms and we know it's hot in dallas this time of year. they didn't have the riot gear that police in ferguson were criticized for using at the protests there. how do you expect police departments around the country to re-evaluate now the way they prepare for peaceful protests. >> i'm sure they're going to sit around the table and come up with different ideas, thoughts and suggestions. but i'm sure the thought process was this is going to be a peaceful protest. we're going to go 10, 12, 15 blocks and then it will be over with. no one had any idea that was going to happen. so that's why they didn't don their bulletproof vests and riot gear and they weren't trying to intimidate the protesters as well. hey, look, we're regular people just like you and we're here to protect you. unfortunately, we see what happened. >> i was thinking about this this morning. how does a police officer get back up and go to work today the

assaulting them. the 42-year-old is facing five counts of child sex abuse. the victims are three boys, ages 12, 13 and 15. police are worried there could be more victims. if you have any information, you're asked to call police. d.c.'s mayor has released the first body camera footage of an officer-involved shooting in northeast. [ gunfire ] you can hear the shots here as d.c. police fire their guns at 63-year-old sherman evans. this was late in june. evans died from his injuries. police say he pointed a gun at them. the gun later turned out to be a bb gun, but district officials say the officers did what they were trained to do. >> how our officers respond, engage with the subject and the suspect before making the decision to use deadly force, i think that is a marked difference when you look at this video versus the videos that are being talked about nationally

>> police union officials say the mayor should not have released that video without a full review of the case. the mayor's office says it did consult with d.c.'s u.s. attorney before making that footage public. new today, the labor department announced 287,000 jobs were added last month. it's a sign the economy is still recovering from a slump early in the year. the hiring spurt marked a sharp employment from may's dismal showing when just 11,000 jobs were added. the up employment rate stands at 4.9%. a change on the campaign trail today. democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders is expected to endorse presumptive nominee hillary clinton next week. it's all set to happen at a joint campaign event in new hampshire on tuesday. sanders' expected endorsement will come three weeks after the end ofhe democratic primaries. the vermont senator has pushed for policy commitment and promises for a more inclusive party, but he has yet to s

next week we should learn the outcome of a class action lawsuit brought by a virginia delegate to the republican national convention. beau core rel says he doesn't want to vote for donald trump but according to virginia state law he and other delegates are required to vote for the winner of the state's primary. mark herring, a democrat, is defending the state law saying he knew the rules when he became a delegate and is trying to undermine thousands of voters at the last minute. this morning terry mcauliffe made a stop in virginia. the atlantic gateway projectin clues rail expansion, increased bus service and an extension to the i-95 express lanes. the $165 million grant will be used to help leverage millions of dollars more for the transportation improvement project. if you want to beat the heat this weekend, you might consider heading to the potomac waterfront to celebrate a milestone in

a live look over the nation's capital as we get ready for another scorcher around here with temperatures well into the 90s today. pepco is gearing up for peak usage, but they want you to cut down the ac a little bit. customers can help conserve energy and save some money through an incentive program today. pepco is offering a bill credit of $1.25 for every kilowatt hour of reduced energy use below the custom customer's average energy from 1:00 to 5:00 today. take some water and maybe a

use the metro stations today. they don't have working cooling systems. the temperature inside some stations reached into the high 80s and even 90s yesterday. that was yesterday. metro says repairs should be done by next saturday. well, to keep trash crews safe during this heat wave, d.c.'s public works department started to collect trash at 6:00 this morning when it was a little cooler. pickup will continue through tomorrow morning. whenever temperatures are expected to reach 90 or higher, crews will start picking up trash earlier than normal. >> clear it out early. it smells later in the day when it gets hot. >> this is true. >> that's probably a good idea. >> so how hot? how hot, how smelly? >> you know, i can't comment on how smelly, but how hot, oh, my gosh. i tell you what, those temperatures are already into the 80s, well into the 80s. even at about 8:00 a.m., i think our temperature was at 82. that's incredible. i mean, yes, we are in d.c., but our average er

so we're almost there right now. i think our temperature is at 87. we'll find out in two seconds because i'll show you exactly what that temperature is. but what really matters is the heat index and that's going to be in the triple digits once again by afternoon. it could be on the lower side because we'll have some strong storms between 2:00 and 9:00 so that could take those temperatures down, especially in our western suburbs. storms will be moving from the west to the east. other than that, saturday looks beautiful. we're going to be hot and muggy in the morning, but that humidity will fall during the second half of the day. we're at 87 here in d.c., 88 in manassas. yes, we are on our way into the 90s today but this is what it feels like outside. it feels like we are in the low to mid-90s. now, we had a few showers out there through page county and up through i-81. we'll have more as we continue through the day. 11:00, we'll have a few more clouds but after 2:00 we'll see more showers and thunderstorms. but you've got fireworks tonight, looking od

more from that news conference in just a moment. the investigation has turned to the suspects now. one, the man who was in a standoff for hours with police has been identified as micah johnson, a 25-year-old from dallas. federal officials also now say they have ruled out terrorism as a possible motive here. five officers were killed out of a total of 12 who were shot last night. now two rapid transit officer brent thompson and dallas officer michael crowl have been identified. it was a peaceful protest in the streets of dallas that ended in a hail of gunfire. right now we want to let you hear the moments that follow the shootings. we warn you that in this video you'll hear gunshots and the panic. in this video you can see members of the police force there saluting, honoring their colleagues who died. in total, 12 officers were shot, as we know. some of them remain in critical condition at this hour. this morning d.c. police chief cathy lanier said something like this is unnerving for everyone. >> i think the officers, rightfully so, are very shaken by what's happened. they got up, come to work today. they continue to do their jobs. we have scheduled protests in the city. we'll facilitate those protests like we always do. >> chief lanier also said the department is increasing security around its facilities and doubling up shifts in the wake of the dallas shootings. now we turn to the investigation into the suspected shooters here. police identified the man who died in a parking garage by police explosive as 25-year-old micah xavier johnson. dallas police chief david brown spoke about his possible motives during a news conference this morning. >> he was upset

lives matter. he said he was upset about the recent police shootings. the suspect said he was upset at white people. the suspect stated he wanted to kill white people, especially white officers. >> three other suspects are in police custody now, and according to dallas' mayor, they are not cooperating. protesters were out in the streets in dallas to voice their anger and their frustration over the deadly shootings of two black men by white police officers. nbc's kirk gregory has more on those incidents. >> reporter: shots fired, as protests over the police-involved shooting deaths of two african-american males this week turned violent in dallas. >> ask everybody to focus on one thing right now, and that is the dallas police officers, their families, those that are deceased, those that are in the hospital. >> reporter: a sharp contrast to the peaceful demonstrations from

alton sterling, shot and killed tuesday after a confrontation with police. that incident captured on cell phone video is provoking questions and outrage nationwide, with protesters calling for the officers to be charged with murder. at a vigil for sterling, louisiana's governor asked to keep the peace. >> now may be a time for demonstrations, it may be a time for protests, but there is no time for violence. >> reporter: the unrest continued in minnesota, where demonstrators marching to the governor's mansion held a vigil for 34-year-old philandro castile. video went viral showing the moments after an officer shoots castile, his girlfriend streaming it online. at a press conference, minnesota governor mark dayton called for justice. >> would this have happened if those passengers, the driver and passenger were white? i don't think it would have. justice will be served. justice must be served. >> reporter: and now protesters

a symbol of west virginia pride that was damaged in last month's flooding will reopen for business next week. the historic greenbrier resort will open on tuesday. the grounds and some of the rooms at the hotel were pretty heavily damaged by the flooding.

cancel the greenbrier classic because of the damage. it was supposed to start yesterday. hundreds of people who lost their homes in that flooding have been staying at the resort while staff works to reopen the hotel. if you think you are hot and sweating in this weather, just imagine those dealing with the high temperatures while wearing heavy gear and fighting fires. some florida firefighters are getting a brand new way to beat the heat. mary mcguire explains how it could be a life-saver. >> reporter: hot and humid florida heat combined with a four-alarm fire last month at this walmart proved to be a dangerous combination for three firefighters, who were all treated for heat exhaustion. >> it's hot, plus the temperature of the fire itself is extreme, so it's a very uncomfortable experience and you're working, your adrenaline is going, so there's a lot of factors that go into play to get your body temperature up for sure. >> lieutenant kellen was at that fire and has suffered from heat stroke in the

one reason why he was fourth in line to test out his department's latest machine. a cross between an air conditioner and a refrigerator. it pumps cold air through a hose and into a hood. >> when you put this on, you're breathing cold air. >> reporter: in just two minutes it can lower a firefighter's body temperature by one greer and when it comes to fighting fires, minutes can mean the difference between life and death. >> as you move up between 104, 105, 106 degrees, many don't make it past 108. >> it really felt good on my body and high head. >> reporter: this brand new machine was donated to the department just in time for the dog days of summer and peak fire season. >> that sounds like a really good piece of equipment. >> not only in florida but also around here, especially with the weather we're having. >> let's get one. >> let's get one on the anchor desk, it's so warm out

to be warm throughout the remainder of the day. tomorrow we're in the 90s as well. guess what, we could have another little heat wave on our hands by next week. well, today that temperature in the 90s. the heat index right around 100 degrees. we will have some stronger storms later on throughout the afternoon. here's a look at the current temperatures now. we're at 87 here in d.c., it's 89 in fredericksburg. again, we're headed into the mid-90s. the heat index in the lower to mid-90s as well so we keep those temperatures coming up and we keep that heat index rising as well. all right, we've got a few showers out there mainly along i-81 and we'd some down through page county but otherwise we're dry. we're going to see more showers and thunderstorms as we continue into the afternoon. any time between 2:00 moving into our western suburbs and then continuing until 8:00 or 9:00, but very humid as we go through the day. sultry, we'll have storms right around the i-95 corridor between 4:00 and 5:00. i'd give it

>> well, shook means market, open air market. we take ingredients from all over the region and we are taking vegetables and making them something special. >> can i just show you this, this is so beautiful. if you can zero in on this, this is the most beautiful cauliflower i've ever seen. it's browned, it's beautiful and it's an example of what you are doing. so you turned from a barbecue lover to a vegetarian. how did that happen? >> i mean i was a barbecue lover. i come from the fine dining world as well. this is something special. this is something so unique. we're doing food that's good and good for you without compromise. >> and you have dishes for people who are on all kinds of diets. >> for whatever your diet is, we can make it happen. >> okay. let's make something happen here. you've got this cauliflower and this looks like a beautiful -- >> that's our beet salad. >> beet salad.

what are you going to make? >> i'm going to do one of our signature dishes, which is our cauliflower. we take the big heads of cauliflower and roast up large trays of it so we get that golden brown on the outside but nice and crisp on the inside. we break it down into these beautiful little florets. we heat it up really quick and add these wonderful ingredients. so we have blanched tomatoes. we'll flow some in here. you have the blanched tomatoes. >> and i just stir it? i'm good at mixing. >> you'll be my new sous chef. we have parsley, scallions, here we take jalapenos and garlic and fuse it to make this oil. it's not to make the dish spicy, it's to balance the dish out. so you had aa little bit of that. and one of the beautiful parts of this is with our tehina. we bring it in, we import it ourselves from

we want to update you once more about the tragedy in dallas today. five police officers there killed after a peaceful protest. we now know the names of two of those officers, dallas rapid transit officer brent thompson and dallas police officer michael crowl. police took three suspects into custody and killed another. the one who died is identified as micah xavier johnson of dallas. the other two are not cooperating with police. they have r

activists in our area are calling for a peaceful demonstration saying fighting violence with violence is wrong. police across the country are sharing their support as well. here in d.c., chief cathy lanier said they are also making changes to protect officers today. you may have been hearing all about the water resistance samsung cell phone. well, according to some reports, it actually isn't waterproof. apparently the problem is limited to the galaxy s-7 active model. the south dakotandard s-7 and s models have the same claims of water resistance and pass the testing. a fairfax homeowner hired a local painting company to spruce up her fence but then the painter wouldn't take her phone calls. when the paint started to bubble and peel, she contacted the nbc4 response team. >> reporter: irene, frustrations are bubbling over because of this and this, and check this one out too. it looks

but the problem is, it was just painted. >> it was peeling, peeling and bubbling. i was really concerned. i tried to contact the guy and cause no response. >> he just wouldn't return your call? >> he would not return my calls. he would not return my e-mails, nothing. >> reporter: irene hired a local painting company october 6th. in an e-mail proposal, this contractor quoted her the price, that included sanding, priming and painting the fence for $1,050. the job according to irene was completed in less than one day. >> they did the job. they came when i wasn't home so i don't know what they did, but the fence was painted. >> reporter: a few months later when the paint began to crack, irene said her e-mails and calls to the painter went unanswered. >> i tried for a couple of months and then i saw a segment on nbc4 and i saw you and i
