leaders tonight trying to make sense of a difficult and painful week. the suspect is dead. now we can move on to healing. that's what the mayor of dallas said tonight, 24 hours after the worst attack on american police officers in recent memory. >> the governor of texas called it an act of cowardice by an assass assassin. president obama is cutting husband trip to poland short. he'll return to washington on sunday and visit dallas early next week. >> we're also learning more about micah johnson. they think he acted alone, moving between elevated positions and targeting white police officers from above. we know the names of four of those five officers who were killed, one was recently marry. >> we've got team coverage tonight from dallas and here in washington. let's start with the

nbc's jay gray. there is an erie silence in downtown dallas tonight. just over 24 hours after this chaos and carnage. five officers shot and killed, even more wounded by a sniper targeting police from an elevated perch downtown. >> this was a mobile shooter that had written manifestos on how to shoot and move, shoot and move and he did that. >> investigators now say that man, 25-year-old mie ka xavier johnson was the lone gunman during the killing spree. he was cornered in a parking garage and eventually killed by s.w.a.t., officers detonated a controlled explosive, the first time it had ever been done in the u.s. >> it seems as though the sole suspect has received his justice. and what will be

9/11. jay gray, nbc news dallas. several faith communities came together in dallas tonight to try to start the healing process. >> news4's erica gonzalez went to one gathering and said this friday night looks a lot like a sunday morning. sounds like it was packed. >> reporter: yeah, chris, people here in dallas tired of seeing the flashing lights, tired of hearing the gun shots. tonight they're looking for hope. ♪ anguish and unrest. ♪ a handful of dallas churches came together under one roof. >> i had two questions, where and when. ♪

dallas mayor mike rawlings saying that he's done with press conferences for the weekend. now the focus shifts to the memorial for the fallen officers. live in downtown dallas tonight, back to you. >> thank you, raerica. tonight, outside police headquarters in fairfax county, officers posed behind a sign they made for the community in dallas, fairfax stands with you. people here in d.c. are leaving flowers at notes at the national law enforcement memorial. on the walls of the monument are the names of more than 20,000 officers who have been killed in the line of duty. earlier today d.c. police and district leaders held a wreath laying ceremony. we're getting more reaction to the deadly shootings that sparked that

sterling died tuesday after a police officer shot him outside a convenience store in baton rouge. we don't know what led up to it but police say they responded to a complaint about a man threatening people with a gun. and in minnesota the medical examiner has ruled casteel's death a homicide. an officer shot him during a traffic shot on thursday. kas tooel's girlfriend said t@0 officer shot castile and she was reaching for his id and they had just told that officer that castile had a gun and a permit to carry. protests over the shootings continued across the country today and tonight. the largest one in atlanta where thousands 0 people marched peacefully downtown, brought traffic to a downstill. there was also another peaceful rally here in d.c.

that they condemn what happened in dallas. they mourn over the lives of the five officers but they say they will not allow it to overshadow the recent police-involved shooting. >> no justice, no peace! >> save my life! >> what do we want? justice. >> there's too much violence going on, too much senseless killer. >> this man worries about his granddaughterer. what's going through your mind? >> that someone might kill her one day because she's black. >> hundreds protest the two separate police-involved shooting deaths. >> very fortunate that we're here that she got a chance to see how people react. not going to put up with the same thing continuously overand over again. >> they demonstrate against what they describe as police

a lot of folks tell me they're mourning the life of the five officers in dallas. they marched from outside the department of justice building to the white house. some of these protesters belong to the black lives matter movement but they say that does mott mean that only black lives matter. >> can't do violence and replace violence. has to be a stop to all of it sooner or later. >> reporter: and tonight many of the protesters tell me they thank d.c. police and secret service for helping them exercise their first amendment right. live here outthe white house house, news4. the violence we've seen this week is difficult to take in and understand. that's why some are turning to their faith for answers. tonight hundreds of teens, parents and police officers met at the first baptist church of glen ardon to pray for peace. >> one of the things that's hurting me is hearing young people say i've always waed

inside and have looking at how the fire started. new at 11:00, for the first time we're hearing from the parents of a fairfax teenager who lost part of his leg. 18-year-old connor golden was severely injured when he stepped on interment tall explosives on sunday. his leg was amputated below the leg. connors parents have thanked several people for coming to his aid. their bravery and clear headedness may well have saved connor's life. nypd is still investigating that accident. a man from d.c. has been charged with impersonating a top aid to civil rights icon john lewis. the i team obtained court documents that claimed that jared claims to be his chief of staff, using that to score all kinds of perks. the scheme lasted f

through 2015 and now he's facing three years in prison. in reality, jared lewis works for a nonprofit housing organization in d.c. hisawyer has not responded to our request for comment. a unique charity basketball game was held in the district tonight. the driving forces behind it were a potomac maryland mother who lost a basketball loving son to suicide and a former georgetown great whose nba career was derailed by depression. jackie benson shows us how they're changing minds. >> the crowd roared in delight as the two teams, including several former college stand joits, battled up and down the court raising money for you matter. an organization that raises awareness of depression in teens and young adults. michael sweet any is the man who got them all here. his path from austin hill high school to greatness, 9th overall nba

whole lot tonight. we're not going to see a whole lot of cooling. no rain to talk about. we saw some thunderstorms earlier today, that coming with a storm system that moved through. you could see some of those as they moved on through the region, starting to the north an west moving right through d.c. we went from 90 down to 80 degrees and then back to 88 before the daytime heating was all said and done and now we have mid to high level clouds, these clouds coming from big storms down toward the south, the carolinas. this is the relief. where is the air coming from? canada. we love canada this time of year. january we don't like canada. but canada great the time of year because it's going to give us dry air late tomorrow into the day on sunday. enjoy that. tomorrow's forecast, still hot tomorrow, 94, still muggy early but then not as humid tomorrow evening. i think you're going to notice a difference. if you're getting dinner outsides tomorrow, it's going t
