night of protests and another day of mourning ahead as texas, minnesota, and louisiana continue to grieve. and with them so does the nation, so do many of you as we try to make sense of what unfolded in two deadly police shootings, and now the tragedy in texas. and on this saturday, july 9th, good morning to you. i'm david culver. >> i'm angie. following the two deadly shootings of black men this week and shooting deaths of five officers in dallas, texas. this was the scene just a few hours o

and baton rouge. >> we are working to get you caught up on all the latest overnight. first, we do want to start off on storm team 4 as we enter your fifth day of this heat wave. >> we got relief out of the way. starting off early on this saturday morning, we've got sun rise under way now and at dawn we have just a few clouds coming through. there's a live view from the storm team 4 national harbor camera, prince georges county. overlooking the capital wheel, see a breeze there streaking down this potomac river. it's a muggy morning. temperatures are hovering around 70. out of the mountains, it's comfortable this morning. down in the 60s most locations. western maryland, eastern and west virginia. close to washington, 70s. montgomery, mid 70s fairfax. near 80 in

upper 70s around the chesapeake bay. storm team radar, all clear. don't have any showers or storms anywhere for the mountains to the bay and the atlantic beaches starting off on this saturday morning. a look at your hour by hour forecast for the day ahead and the big changes on the way over the next ten days. that's coming up this next half hour. back to this protests across the country thousands took to the streets here in d.c. and many other major cities in response to the violent week. you're looking at the scene in baton rouge. that is where alton sterling appeared to be killed by a police officer on tuesday night. the video of his death sparking the viral reaction that sent shockwaves throughout the country. >> and his death is just one this week that is believed to have instigated the tragedy in dallas. president obama we're told cutting his trip to nd

the nato summit short. he's going to return here to washington tomorrow and visit dallas early next week. we're also learning more about the shooter. micah johnson, police believe he acted alone moving floor to floor while targeting white police officers from above. here's what we know so far about the 25-year-old. he was a veteran who left the army reserves in 2015. nine months after returning from afghanistan. police say he was a loner who had no criminal record but inside his home they found weapons, bullet proof vest, and bomb making materials. we've also learned johnson told a hostage negotiator he wanted to kill white officers after recent shootings of black men. meanwhile this morning we're also learning more about the lives micah johnson took. among the fallen a newlywed, veteran, and a grandfather. >> they were all assigned to cover what was a peaceful protest until this fateful shots raou

known as a cops cop. he received an award just for that from the dallas police association. smith was a father of two who volunteered at his catholic church and the ymca and worked with kids at risk. before joining the dallas police department back in 1989 he was a u.s. army ranger. >> angie, there was officer lauren aarons, served for 14 years, came to texas from the los angeles county sheriff's office. his colleagues say he was a big guy with an even bigger heart. >> 43-year-old brent thompson is the first d.a.r.t. officer to be killed in the line of duty. thompson served the rapid transit for seven years and had just gotten married two weeks ago. this to another transit officer. he also had six grandchildren and was a grandfather of three. >> michael krol loved basketball. in 2007 he moved to dallas to become a police officer because his home o

hiring. the 40-year-old had a girlfriend to whom he sent a message the night of the protest via text and told her everything was going peacefully. >> and this is patrick zamarippa, served in the navy, three tours in iraq before becoming an officer. his father says the 32-year-old would bend over backwards to help anybody and described him as a patient and giving person. his family rushed to the hospital when they heard about the shooting. >> met me and took me into a room and i just thought maybe we were -- he was in surgery or something. >> he was a father of a 2-year-old and stepfather to a 10-year-old. he joined the dallas police department five years ago and was recently assigned to the down attorney bicycle patrols. his father is calling to an end to the violence. >> all this hate has to stop. my son paid the ultimate price. i don't care if you're black, white, green, purple, it needs to sto we're all

>> and seven officers and two civilians were wounded in this attack. they are all expected to survive. in our coverage continues now as we take a look at the mood in dallas after a week full of tragedy. >> news4 is there this morning with the latest. >> reporter: anguish and unrest. a handful of dallas churches came together under one roof. >> i had two questions. where and when. ♪ looking at this sanctuary you would think it were a sunday morning but it's not, on a friday night in dallas, texas, people are here together. >> i think we need some type of closure and some type

what -- how to respond and how not to respond. >> reporter: the heaviest of the hearts saturates the room and questions of why and when does it stop are here. >> there's a hopelessness that have come over people in our communities, not just in dallas, nationally. >> reporter: demonstrations this week hands up in the church, tonight hands up, people trying to counter balance all they've seen on social media this week with something else, something more. the week's peaceful marches ending in peaceful prayer here, if only for a little while, tonight the tired got a chance to rest. dallas mayor mike rawlings saying he's pretty much done with press conferences for the weekend. now the focus shifts to the memorials of the fallen officers. we will of course be continuing our coverage from dallas over the next several hours. pl

that person ideas of where to take pictures including the pentagon and other landmarks in arlington and dc. it took rescue crews from five different localities to try and rescue a teen from drowning in frederick county. officials confirmed 1-year-old of germantown died after he went under the water at nightingale beach in new market yesterday. he was swimming with friends when he became fatigued an disappeared. crews found him after a four-hour search. the investigation into his death is still ongoing. we're now hearing from the parents of a fairfax county teenager who lost part of his leg in a bizarre incident in central park in new york. 18-year-old conner golden was severely injured when he stepped on experimental explosives last sunday. his parents say conner's leg was amputated below the knee. now in good condition, in a statement released last night conner's parents thanked several folks for coming to his aid. they said, quote, their bra

depression. >> we are looking at how they are, through the game, changing minds. >> reporter: the crowd roared in delight as the two teams including several former college standouts battled up and down the court raising money for umatter, an organization that raises awareness of depression in teens and young adults. michael sweetney is the man who got them all here. his post from austin hill high school to greatness as georgetown to a ninth overall nba draft pick in 2003 to the new york knicks was derailed. he now realizes by untreated depression. >> it was a tough road. i struggled for five or six years in silence. the only person who knew was my wife. nobody really knew. i ended up gaining weight, getting depressed, i lost my nba career. >> reporter: enter sue rosenstock who lost her 16-year-old son evan who played basketball at potomac's winston churchill high school to suicide in 2013. his death

and alton sterling. >> there has to be a stop to all of it sooner or later. >> many of the protesters thanking the d.c. police and secret service helping them exercise their first amendment right. two civilians also hurt in the dallas sniper shootings. one of those civilians was 37-year-old shetamia taylor who threw herself over her four sons to protect them when those shots were ringing out. none of her children were hurt. she's now recovering from a shattered leg. the sniper in the dallas shooting told police he was angry about the recent deaths of two black men in minnesota and louisiana. nbc's blake mccoy is following the investigation in both of those states. >> reporter: the faces of two black men, both killed by police, both deaths captured on video for the world to see. >> he shot four bull lites into him, sir. he was just getting his license and registration, sir. >> reporter: in minnesota today

friend. >> reporter: protesters continue to gather around the governor's mansion while the county attorney is promising a prompt and thorough investigation into the death of philando castile. >> i assure you that we will prosecute this case to the fullest extent of the law. >> reporter: the officer who shot castile during a traffic stop wednesday is identified as jeronimo yanez, a four-year veteran of the force currently on paid leave. minnesota's governor today defending his belief the shooting was racially motivated despite outcry from law enforcement. >> do you stand by those remarks? >> i said them. i'll stand by what i said yesterday based on the information i had. >> reporter: meanwhile in baton rouge, memorials and vigils continue for alston sterling, shot tuesday outside a convenience store with struggle with police. families from both men reacting today from the news coming out of dallas. >> hurt people hurt other people. it's not right, it's

justifiable, and it's not acceptable. this did not start with you guys. it did not start with me. and it will not end with us. >> i just dropped to my knees and i said, lord, this is -- this is ridiculous. my heart goes to everyone in dallas. >> reporter: today the mother of another young black man killed by police, michael brown, offed her thoughts in a "new york times" op-ed. death isn't pretty for anyone, but what these families now face is the horror of seeing their loved one die over and over, in public, in such a violent way. she goes on to say, so many told me, i am so sorry for your loss. after a while, all the sorries bled together and at the end of it nothing changed. >> well, there are many people returning to their faith for answers in the wake of this week's tragedies. last night hundreds of teens, parents, and police officers gathered to pray for peace. >> that was at the first
