this is a scene just a few hours ago in polices like phoenix, atlanta, and baton rouge. >> we promised to keep you up to date on the very latest developments coming out from overnight including the live report we'll bring you in a moment but we do want to begin here at home with storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein track what is the fitth day of this heat wave but the end is in sight, right, tom? >> we're going the get a break from the high humidity by late tonight and into tomorrow. but between now and then here comes another hot and humid day on this saturday. the second saturday in july dawning with some clouds floating through. that's a live view from the storm team 4 tower camera looking off to the north and west from upper northwest washington. those towers there in tinley town and in friendship heights and montgomery county in the middle, up in the horizon where the sky is clearing out nicely and the temperatures there are in the low 70s.

around 70 degrees. out of the mountains. generally in the 60s. around the metro area nearby suburbs, montgomery, prince george's, fairfax counties, mid and upper 70s. beautiful morning around the bay as well. low to mid 70s. it's rather muggy. and the storm team 4 radar scanning our sky don't have any showers, any storms anywhere from the mountains to the bay and the atlantic beach is off to a dry start this morning. a look at our next chance of storm and another heat wave on the way coming up this half hour. it's 7:01. back to the protests across the country, thousands took to the streets here in d.c. and many other major cities in response to the violent week. you are looking at the scene in baton rouge. that is where alton sterling appeared to be killed by a police officer tuesday night. the video of his death sparking viral reaction that sent shockwaves throughout the

country. >> his death is just one this week that is believed to have led up to the tragedy in dallas. that's where five police officers were killed thursday night. here's what we know this morning. president obama is now cutting his trip to poland and the nato summit short. he's going to return here to washington tomorrow and is expected to visit dallas early next week. we're also learning more about the shooter. micah johnson, police believe he acted alone moving from floor to floor targeting white police officers from above. >> and we want to get right to the very latest out of dallas. sarah is live at the scene. good morning, sarah. >> reporter: good morning to you both. and as you mentioned, that gunman, 25-year-old micah xavier johnson, police are telling us he acted alone but you may remember it was initially thought his gunfire was mistaken for snipers which is why police are now calling him a mobile shooter. today we're learning a little bit more about him. while he was killed by a police detonated bomb we'

war in afghanistan and he had a serious grudge against cops and white people. right now most of downtown dallas is still shut down while police still search for evidence. police here are calling it a well-planned attack. taking the lives of five officers and wounding seven more including two civilians. police say that he had a written manifestos on how to shoot and move and he did just that. he wreaked chaos in what started out as a peaceful protest, shooting -- protesting the deaths of black men in minnesota and louisiana. now again, downtown dallas is shut down as investigators look for evidence. the president is expected to be here next week to meet with the governor as well as victims. live in dallas, back to you. >> thank you. meanwhile this morning we're also learn more about the lives that micah johnson took. the five police officers. among the fallen, newlywed, veteran, and grandfather. >> they were all assigned to co w

protest until the fateful shots rang out. 55-year-old michael smith was known as a cops cop. he even received an award just for that from the dallas police association. smith was a father of two who volunteered at his catholic church and the ymca and worked with kids at risk. before joining the dallas police department back in 1989 he was a u.s. army ranger. >> officer lorne ahrens served on the dallas police department for 14 years. he came to texas from the los angeles county sheriff's office. his colleagues say he was a big guy with an even bigger heart. >> 43-year-old brent thompson is a first d.a.r.t. officer to be killed in the line of duty. thompson served the dallas area rapid transit for seven years and had just gotten married two weeks ago to another transit officer. he also had six grown children and was a grandfather of three. >> michael krol loved basketball and known for helping others.

become a police officer because his hometown of detroit wasn't hiring. the 40-year-old had a girlfriend to whom he sent a text the night of the protests and told her, everything was going peacefully. >> patrick zamarippa served in the navy, three tours in iraq before becoming an officer. his father says the 32-year-old would bend over backwards to help anybody and described him as a patient and giving person. his family rushed to the hospital when they heard about the shooting. >> met me and took me to a room and i just thought maybe we were, you know, he was in surgery or something. >> zamarippa was the father of a 2-year-old a stepfather to 10-year-old. he joined the dallas police department five years ago and recently assigned to the downtown bicycle patrols. his father is calling for an end to the violence. >> all this hate has to stop. my son paid the ultimate price. i don't care if you're bla

closure and some type of answer and some type of direction as to what -- how to respond and how not to respond. ♪ >> reporter: the heaviest of the hearts saturates the room and questions of why and when does it stop brought here. >> there's a hopelessness that has come over people in our communities, not just in dallas, nationally. >> reporter: demonstrations this week, hands up in the church, tonight hands up. people trying to counter balance all that they've seen on social media this week with something else, something more. the week's peaceful march is ending in peace nul prayer here and if only for a little while tonight the tired got a chance to rest. dallas mayor mike rawlings saying he's pretty much done with press conferences for the weekend. now the focus shifts to the memorials of the fallen officers. we will be continuing our coverage from

textbook arrival for the brand new soyuz spacecraft. >> check this out all new this morning. a russian soyuz spacecraft safely landing on the international space station. nasa astronaut kate reubens is part of a three-person crew that includes a japanese astronaut and a russian cosmonaut. reubens plans to attempt the first dna sequencing while in orbit. the crew will spend the next four months up in space. it's 7:11. doctors are reporting the first death of a person infected with the zika virus here in the u.s. the salt lake county health department in utah announcing the person had traveled to another country earlier this year where zika is spreading p the patient tested positive for the virus and died in late june. doctors do not know if or how the virus contributed to the death. the person was

another underlying health condition. more zika news as the countdown to rio continues. u.s. open champion dustin johnson saying no thanks when it comes to the summer games. this morning we've learned he's withdrawn from the games because of concerns over the virus. it's costing golf three of the world's top four players for its return to the olympics after a 112-year absence. jordan speith is the only player from the top four who has not said whether or not he's going to brazil. and today you can get a look at the u.s. olympic equestrian riders in action before they head off to rio next month. they will compete at the land rover international happens in the plains, virginia. they built a $1 million arena for the event. well, it might be breakfast time now but start thinking about dinner, it could be a good night to go el fresco. take the food outside, dining outside.

start. live view from our tou wower ca. four things to know this weekend on a hot and humid saturday. heat index by mid afternoon is up around 100 degrees as the temperatures hover in the mid 90s. feels like temperature will be getting dangerously hot, up here 100. then low humidity will be moving in during the day tomorrow. in fact, it will begin to arrive by late this evening and you'll notice much more comfortable weather in place during the day on sunday. a little bit breezy, too, tomorrow. we'll have winds gusting up to around 20 miles an hour on sunday afternoon. look at what our next heat wave arrives and our next chance of storms coming up in a few minutes. tom, thanks. more now on the tragedy in texas. the leaders are paying tribute to the five police officers ambushed and killed thursday night during a peace march. the texas governor's mansion in austin here lit up in blue last night in honor of those officers. five officers were killed when micah xavier johnson

police involved shootings in louisiana and minnesota earlier this week. >> angie, political response is pouring in after those police involved shootings as you mentioned in louisiana, minnesota, and the tragedy in dallas. both presumptive presidential nominees reacting now to the killings. donald trump canceling his events yesterday tweeting his condolences and calling the incidents senseless violence. hillary clinton spoke with nbc's lester holt about howie can move the needle on race relations. >> i want white people to understand how african-americans feel every day. i want people to put themselves in the shoes of police officers and their families. >> here's nbc's chuck todd now with a look at what's to come tomorrow on "meet the press." >> you can argue it's easily the toughest week in america this year, between the shooting deaths by police officers against african-americans in louisiana, minnesota, and then the

turn 26 today. harris komar of burke was arrested on friday accuse of taking photographs of dc landmarks for what he thought would be a terrorist attack. according to court documents the fbi set up a sting operation in which komar worked with a friend who was an informant. prosecutors say komar gave that person ideas of where to take photos including pentagon and other landmarks in arlington and dc. it took rescue crews five different localities to rescue a team from drowning in frederick county. 18-year-old andrew of germantown died after he went under water at nightingale beach in newmarket yesterday swimming with friends when he became fatigued, went under the water and they couldn't find him. four hour later crews locate him. we know the investigation there is still ongoing. we're now hearing from the parents of a fair tax teenager who lost part ofs;k his leg in t was a bizarre

18-year-old connor golden was severe severe injured when he stepped on experimental explosives last sunday. his parents say connor's leg was amputated below the knee. in a statement released last night connor's parents thanking several folks saying, quote, their bravery and clear-headedness in a moment of crisis may well have saved connor's life. the nypd is still investigate that accident. it is 7:20 right now. and you can help the city of alexandria celebrat its 267th birthday today. a huge acceleration is planned at oronoco bay park this evening. people are invited to bring a picnic and chairs to the potomac water front. there you can sit by the water and hear the sweet sounds of the alexandria symphony, orchestra, and other local bands. >> we're all about celebrating with our children, our families, bringing multi-generations to the city. and we just come

a unique charity basketball game was held in the district last night. >> the driving forces behind it were a potomac maryland mom who lost a basketball loving son to suicide. a former georgetown great whose nba career was derailed by depression. >> new news4's jackie bensen shows us how together through the game they are changing lives. >> reporter: the crowd roared in delight as the two teams including several former college standouts battled up and down the court raising money for umttr, an organization that raises awareness of depression in teens and young adults. michael sweetney is the man who got them all here. his past, from austin hill high school to greatness as georgetown to a ninth overall

new york knicks was derailed. he now realizes by untreated depression. >> it was a tough road. i mean, i struggled for five or six years in silence. the only person who knew was my wife. nobody really knew. i ended up gaining weight, getting depressed, i lost my nba career. >> reporter: enter sue rosenstock who lost her 16-year-old son evan who played basketball at potomac's winston churchill high school to suicide in 2013. his death led to a creation of umttr. mutual friend introduced sweetney and rosenstock. you had to know a charity basketball game was coming, right? >> the whole idea of what mike sweetney and i were hoping to accomplish was to be able to reach the segment of the audience anywhere from 12 to 24 who may be suffering and are not ready to show it, may not know the signs. >> reporter: both sweetney and rosenstock bring very strong support into this game, into this effort and they say

the dallas sniper shootings. one of those civilians was 37-year-old shetamia taylor who threw herself over her four sons to protect them when those shots were ringing out. none of her children were hurt. she's now recovering from a shattered leg. the sniper in the dallas shooting told police he was angry about the recent deaths of two black men in minnesota and louisiana. nbc new's blake mccoy is following the investigation in both of those states. >> reporter: the faces of two black men, both killed by police, both deaths captured on video for the world to see. >> you shot four bullets into him, sir. he was just getting his license and registration, sir. >> reporter: in minnesota today -- >> that was my brother, not a friend. >> reporter: -- protesters continue to gather around the governor's mansion while the county attorney is promising a prompt and thorough investigation into the death of philando castile. >> i assure you that we will

fullest extent of the law. >> reporter: the officer who shot castile during a traffic stop wednesday is identified as jeronimo yanez, a four-year veteran of the force currently on paid leave. minnesota's governor today defending his belief the shooting was racially motivated despite outcry from law enforcement. >> do you stand by those remarks? >> i said them. i'll stand by what i said yesterday based on the information i had. >> reporter: meanwhile in baton rouge, memorials and vigils continue for alton sterling, shot tuesday outside a convenience store with struggle with police. families of both men reacting today from the news coming out of dallas. >> hurt people hurt other people. it's not right, it's not justifiable, and it's not acceptable. this did not start with you guys. it did not start with me. and it will not end with us. >> i just dropped to my knees and i said, lord, this is -- this is ridiculous.

my heart goes out to everyone in dallas. >> reporter: today the mother of another young black man killed by police, michael brown, offered her thoughts in a "new york times" op-ed. death isn't pretty for anyone, but what these families now face is the horror of seeing their loved one die over and over, in public, in such a violent way. she goes on to say, so many told me, i am so sorry for your loss. after a while, all the sorrys bled together and at the end of it nothing changed. >> that was nbc's blake mccoy report ing there. there are many people who are turning to their faith for answers to in the wake of this week's tragedies. last night hundreds of teens, parents, and police officers gathered to pray for peace at the first baptist church of glenarden. >> one of the biggest things hurting me now is hearing young people say i always wanted to be a police officer but now i'm afraid to. >> to lose any officer is

a metro train operator was fired. metro's general manager said the operator showed a blatant disregard for safety when the operator put the train on the same track as oncoming trains causing a near miss. this happened last tuesday. metro says that two track inspectors were almost hit. expect a faster commute on vre trains once the atlantic gateway project gets finished. the proposal will mean that scx trains will no longer have the right of way which slows down vre. governor topped in alexandria yesterday to taut the i-95 corridor project. angie just weren't you just in indiana? >> no. >> somebody in indiana is a winner this morning waking up a multi, multimillionaire. $540 million jackpot had one winning ticket sold i
