gunman micah johnson had an arsenal of weapons at this home in dallas. speaking from a nato summit in poland today president obama said it's been a tough week for the families of everyone who died in the violence and he dismissed the idea that our country has returned to the darkest days of our past. >> unity in recognizing this is not how we want our communities to operate. >> news 4 is in dallas tonight we are live outside police headquarters. er erica. >> reporter: good evening. right behind me is the dallas police headquarters is a memorial that been growing since we arrived and if gives you any idea how badly this community is hurting, i think the images say it all.

that this is going to continue to grow but here in the city of dallas it was said mayor mike rawlings would likely attend a healing mass later today and there are a number of protesters organizers that would have a community meeting later this evening to continue the conversations of where do they go from here on out. >> okay. thank you very much. our team coverage continues in northwest d.c. now where people are holding a peaceful vigil for the fallen dallas police officers. news 4 is at the national law enforcement memorial where people are already starting to gather. >> reporter: that vigil is set to take place here at the national fallen police officers memorial at 8:00 this evening. today we've seen people coming here to remember and pay their respects to the five fallen officers in dallas. many here are law enforcement officers who are from out of town who came here to pay their re

in recent events across the country. one man tells me he's retired but now his son is a young officer and he's concerned about his safety and about these tensions. many are concerned what does this mean for the future of law enforcement and how should the police and the community combat that together. >> nothing more than telling them what's on these walls today particularly with what's going on around the country and having the opportunity to be here was the least i could do to pay respect to all these fallen men and women. >> with all the turmoil that's going on right now in the country it's especially difficult to be a police officer. my youngest son just started as a police officer last year. >> it's a sad change we've seen over the last several years of communitiies separating from their police departments and police departments separating from their communities and in some way it has to come back. >> reporter: there will also be a black lives matter demonstration

7:00. it will get under way at the african-american civil war metro station stop. detectives tried to figure out who killed a 62-year-old woman in her home. they found the body yesterday. officers were called to the house on 71st avenue to check on her. she had traumatic injuries. police working to find a motive. a woman is facing murder charges in the death of a man in southeast d.c. police arrested the 42-year-old woman today. investigators say young stabbed 50-year-old allen smith this morning at a house. the stabbing was domestic. it's been a historic gathering place for decades. today people came together to stop redevelopment plans for the plaza. neighbors don't want condos. the plaza is used as space for the farmer's market. a warning f

police are hoping someone knows who robbed a store in northeast d.c. on july 4th.

we're getting a look at at wild chase with a 12-year-old boy behind the wheel. this is in maine. police put out this video, 50 mile an hour speeds. the boy ran red lights and stop signs before police rammed the van to get it stopped. the 12-year-old is facing charges. a young man killed while riding his bicycle in a hit and run crash and his killer is still on the loose and tonight his loved ones are demanding justice. >> reporter: this 23-year-old man had a promising life ahead of him. he was a member of the junior police academy where he left an impression on the chief and all who knew him. >> he was a wonderful person. he loved his family and community. >> reporter: that ended around

1:00 a.m. on june 23rd. this spot marks where he was hit by a hit and run driver. >> we're looking for anybody who may have seen anything leading up to the crash or after the crash, anything whatsoever that you might think may have been odd. >> our family is devastated. our family will never, ever be the same. >> reporter: there's irony on top of the tragedy. the accident happened just feet away from his home but it was days before he was identified. >> he was a home body. he would never stay out all night so when several days went by we were concerned. >> reporter: they filed a missing person's report and that's when the connection was made to an unidentified hit and run victim. >> we're so devastated. >> reporter: the family found comfort in knowing he wasn't alone at the scene, that someone was at his side. two strangers came on the scene and prayed with him. >> someone told us that he reached out and grabbed one of the women's hands so we'd like to thank them. >> reporter: they'd like to know who those women

. on this saturday night, tragedy in dallas. as a city and nation honor and mourn those killed in the line of duty, new insights about the shooter and his background. including his military service and what may have led him to target the police. call for unity, president obama says the dallas shooter was a demented individual not representative of americans. and says the country is not as divided as some have suggested, despite continuing protests, and vigils after the police shootings of two black men. and the kindness of strangers, in a community shattered by violence, coming together to aid and comfort each other and those who serve now dealing with unimaginable loss. nightly news begins now.
