information online and so-called swatting incidents at their homes. scott macfarlane joins us now with more. scott? >> reporter: good evening. he's a new york city man but charged here in d.c. because this case quickly got the attention of the feds. his name is amir islam. he was charged two years in prison. he admits to conspireing to release information of celebrities and high-profile officials online. one man who viewed tells news4 kim kardashian was among the celebrities included on that site. we've learned that former new york city mayor michael bloomberg had his social security number exposed, too. for some public officials for whom islam madebo

investigators say a man shot and killed two court bailiffs and injured a deputy inside the berrien county courthouse. the gunman was then killed by the police. initial reports say the suspect overpowered a bailiff and took his gun. the courtroom is in a resort town of st. joseph, about 100 miles of chicago. >> that shooting comes as the city of dallas continues to mourn the loss of five police officers who were ambushed and killed on the job. president obama will travel to texas tomorrow to attend a prayer service. all of this as we learn new details about the gunman, micah johnson. his parents say the military changed him from an extrovert to a hermit. a military lawyer adds that johnson was accused of sexually harassing a female soldier while deployed. nbc's chris pallone reports. >> reporter: outside the dallas police

candles show support covering the two patrol cars. cops stood solemnly to pay respects. inside headquarters, chief david brown defended his decision to use a bomb to kill micah johnson. >> i would do it again. i would do it again to save our officers' lives. >> reporter: while hiding on the second floor of el centro college, he made it clear he wanted to kill more officers. several people were hiding frightened in the garage. they found a stockpile of weapons and bomb-making material in his mother's home where he lived. >> we're going to uncover every lead until i'm satisfied that this was a lone person. >> reporter: johnson's parents told the website the blaze his demeanor changed becoming more reclusive after he returned from afghanistan. mea

his police department the best in the country but said people and politicians are giving police too much to handle. >> we're asking cops to do too much. we are. every societal failure, we put it off on the cops to solve. >> reporter: the first of the five fallen officers is on wednesday. chris pallone, dallas. a number of protesters arrested at demonstrations across the country over the weekend. in baton rouge, tensions flared last night as protesters clashed with police for a third straight day. in atlanta and memphis, demonstrators blocked traffic to show their frustration. and there were more than 100 arrests in minnesota after the death of philando castile. one officer had a concrete block dropped on his head. his spine was fractured. back in our area, police arrested several people outside

center black lives matter d.c. recorded video as demonstrators blocked traffic. this woman died after officers tased her multiple times during a transport. the prosecutor declined to bring charges in that case. the recent turmoil has prompted at least four countries to warn their citizens about travel to the u.s. the bahamas, bahrain, united arab emirates and new england have advised their citizens to steer clear of protests and large crowds because of the potential for violence. the bahamian government is taking it a step further. they have advised young men to exercise extreme caution during any interaction with the police. now to the presidential race where donald trump is promising to bring what he calls law and order to our

it comes up on "nbc nightly news" with lester holt. virginia delegates won't face any charges if they don't vote for donald trump at the republican national convention next week. today a. judge ruled in favor of a delegate who challenged a state law that requires candidates to vote for the winner of the primary. while this ruling clears virginia delegates of anying legal problems if they vote against trump, the decision does not change the rules of the convention. so not exactly sure how this will impact voting next week. looking at our weather now, really nice day. lots of sunshine, low humidity today. but doug, we've got another heatwave coming our way, huh? >> in a couple of days, maybe one more nice day tomorrow and then wednesday it moves back in. take a look at the temperatures. right now, across the mid-atlantic, this is the place to be in the

investigators are trying to find out who shot and killed a young man in the district. he was walking home in the city's bloomingdale neighborhood. the victim had worked with the democratic national committee. he lived just a couple of blocks away from where he was shot down. pat collins in northwest now with more on this story. pat? >> reporter: he

he came to washington to g involved in politics. he wanted to make the world a better place. he was murdered about a block and a half from his home. >> i heard two sharp gunshots very quickly. i looked at the clock and it was 4:19. >> that's mike mueller. he lives in the bloomingdale neighborhood. he heard the shots. he saw the cops tending to the man in the street. that man, 27-year-old seth rich, from omaha, nebraska, he worked for the democratic national committee. he was jumped and murdered early sunday morning. it was about 4:19 in the morning. seth rich was on his way home. he was talking to his girlfriend on his cell phone. in fact, she said she heard some noise in the background. she asked if he was all right. he said, don't worry, i'll be home soon. you see,

block and a half away. but seth rich, he never made it home. he was jumped, pushed to the ground and shot twice in the back. today, i talked to his mom by phone. >> they took his life for no reason. they didn't finish robbing him. they just took his life and they hurt the community and they hurt -- they hurt the long-term possibility of what he could have done. >> reporter: mike mueller says there have been a number of robberies in this area over the last few weeks and police are wondering if those robberies are linked to the murder sunday morning. >>ost of us thought there were six or seven within a three-week peard within a few blocks of each other. >> and you think this could be a robbery gone bad? >> yeah. i think this was probably the first time when the victim said

announced those deployments today during an unannounced visit to baghdad. he says the troops will provide logistical support. the air field is strategically important and could be a critical asset in the operation to drive isil out of mosul. those deployments bring the total number of u.s. troops in iraq to about 4600. only on news4 tonight could a private car service like uber be used to transport patients who call 911 in the district. it's a plan that the d.c. fire chief is considering. mark segraves is in northeast washington outside the busiest firestation in the region to explain how it would work. mark? >> reporter: good evening, doreen. the firefighters and crews of engine 30 behind me ran nearly 8,000 911 calls last year. many of those were medical

while private ambulances have been picking up some of the slack over the past year or so, now d.c. fire chief dean says he's looking to private services like uber to help pick up the slack. when it comes to keeping busy, nobody in our region deals with as many 911 calls as the crews of engine 30 in d.c. >> they are hopping all day long every day. >> reporter: this fire engine and its crew is ranked as the fourth busiest engine in the nation. >> it's a beat-down sometimes. >> reporter: kenneth wells sits behind the wheel of engine 30 and says responding to more than 7600 emergency calls a year can take a toll on a person. >> you get used to turning off emotions sometimes. you see so much of it, it can kind of get overwhelming. >> reporter: chief dean is working oh

working on a plan to reduce the number of calls that they respond to. >> we're trying to change that so people call us for medical emergencies, not for medical problems. >> reporter: people use 911 when they need to get to a doctor but it's not an emergency. so he is considering having a nurse on duty to screen 911 calls. >> they can talk to the patients and determine if they need to be seen immediately or can we get them into a walk-in clinic instead of going to the e.r. room. we're trying to free up the e.r. room. >> if the nurse determines that the 911 caller doesn't need to go to the emergency room, the plan would be to call a car service to transport that person to a clinic or a doctor's office. >> we are working with the health department to find other ways to transport people, such as using a contract taxi cab or uber or whatever you do.

in oxon hill over the weekend. >> her name is jamila odom. her husband has been charged with her murder. derrick ward has more reaction from neighbors. >> reporter: she was a wife, a mother and she started her own business to get young people involved in fashion. they would build things, make them, model them and wear them. but now she is dead and her estranged husband is facing first and second-degree murder charges. 41-year-old jamila odom shot dead inside of a car here on oxon hill road. charged with murder is her husband who lived nearby. the couple lived at this home in waldorf and a neighbor says they seemed like a happy couple. >> i think we're all shocked because they just didn't seem to be having any kinds of problems that we knew

after somebody broke into an agent's car over the weekend and stole two guns. it happened in northeast d.c. early yesterday morning. the washington field office of the fbi confirms that a handgun and a long gun were stolen but they are not saying much else about those weapons. the d.c. police are helping out in that investigation. a former alexandria fire department employee indicted tonight accused of funneling tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars to a friend. tonight, city officials are in the middle of a review in an effort to make sure that doesn't happen again. northern virginia bureau chief julie carey has that report. >> reporter: just four months later, jackson-asante was fired and indicted today for money laundering. s

decades ago, still a teenager working her way up from secretary to administrative analyst. now she stands accused of sending taxpayer dollars to her friends. jackson h would create fa fraudulent invoices headed by her friends and they would share the money. but the money laundering indictment alleges only that she sent the money to friends. tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars that looked like they went to pay for fire department supplies or training instead wound up with jackson-astane acquaintances. in a statement, officials said a third-party auditing company has been hired to look at their financial controls. there will be more audits and strengthening of the invoice approval

fiscal and ethics training and disciplinary action has been taken against the employee who is failed to provide proper oversight of jackson-asante and the billing procedures. if convicted, she would lose her city pension. the city is seeking full restitution. and charges could still be filed against others in the case. i'm julie carey, news4. a controversial bill to get employees in this district 16 weeks of paid family leave has hit a snag. d.c. councilman said they would not vote on the measure until later this year. businesses are lobbying hard against the costs of the proposal saying it would hurt both large and small companies. the proposal likely will be cut from 16 weeks down to 8 weeks when it comes up again. they call it renewal and remembrance. hundreds of profes

face 3 of metro's safetrack surge is ending but phase 4 starts tomorrow. this time, the crystal city station will be closed. no trains will run between reagan national airport and pentagon city. as usual, shuttle buses will replace the trains but riders traveling from the south should get off at braddock road. only people who go to regular nan national airport should ride all the way to that stop. work will last about seven days. every summer, road projects get under way and that always slows down commuters. this year, there are three projects that you may want to watch out
