this all began with six hours of shootouts with police, 12:00 am in southeast washington. that is the case where a man took over five people in an suv, held them hostage, got into a shootout with police. after that, later in the afternoon, in a separate incident, beginning in southwest washington, three gunmen were being chased. that car chase led to capitol hill. that car later crashed outside that tunnel. a third suspect fled the scene, but was captured later in southwest. they range in age between 18 and 23 years old. one suspect is charged with fleeing police and being in a car with the gun but the man they say fired on police is charged with assault on police officer, possession of an unlicensed weapon and being in a car w

and say good-bye to its fallen officers. their legacies, remembered forever. in dallas, sarah rosario, nbc news. and more demonstrations today near st. paul, minnesota, in protest of philando castile's death, the man killed by a police officer during a traffic stop last week. about three dozen protesters blocked an interstate for several hours before state troopers moved in and arrested them. the ambush of those police officers came after castile's death and the death of alton sterling in louisiana. sterling's son is speaking publicly for the first time since his father's death. 15-year-old cameron sterling said his father was and always will be a good man. he talked to reporters today, as you heard, outside the same convenience store where his father was shot by police. the teen also called for peaceful protests and an end to the violence. >> i feel that ople, in general, no matter what the race is, should come together as one

united family. there should be no more arguments, disagreements, violence, crime. everyone should come together as one united family. >> reporter: the shootings of sterling, philando castile and the dallas police have intensified a national -- painful national conversation about policing and there are many conversations taking place in families around the dinner table. whur's troy johnson is here with today's "talk around town." troy, many african-american parents say they've had "the talk" with the -- the talk with their children of how to handle police. how are people framing the conversation now in the wake of these shootings? >> i remember my parents sitting me down. i sat down with my son at the same time. the conversation centers around how to engage police in these situations, make sure that it's constructive and make sure that you come out safe, primarily.

but people are frustrated about having to have that conversation in these discussions lately, because they're optimistic that their kids can handle themselves if they're in an encounter with a police officer, but in the back of their minds, there's a palpable feeling that something could go wrong and they would love, really, not to have to have that kind of fear. >> so today we know about the president's meeting at the white house. yesterday in dallas he said you can't break the cycle of mistrust between the police and community unless both sides understand the other's experience. how well do your listeners think parents are doing in helping youngsters understand the problems that police are having? the problems they're having out there? >> again, they hope that -- they pray that they equipped their kids with enough information for these situations and also are telling me after having these talks for a long time, it feels more and more like a one-sided conversation. they feel like they're wondering who is talking to police about how they're engaging with th

i asked a man of 15, a young man, the same age as alton sterling's son, what would he say to law enforcement? >> i am a respectful black male but not everybody is like me. so, being a police officer, he needs to go and approach a situation with patience and not have your first instinct be immediately resort to violence. so not respecting the police officer is not going to get you respected yourself. and the police also need to understand to respect us even if we aren't being respectful, because people don't understand that it goes both ways nowadays. >> and his mother very happy and proud that some of the things she has talked about have sunk in. she's hopeful, along with other people i have talked to, that some of that is engrained in the way that officers are trained in the future. it could save some lives. >> interesting to know how people are responding to the dallas police chief. dave brown has been front and center, gotten a lot of attention and a

thank you. tonight, loudoun county board of supervisors proposes a new noise law, former law was discarded after the state supreme court ruled a similar law was unconstitutional. the new law would put limits on yard work and garbage collection, construction. no swimming or hikes at this summer camp. some freshmen at osbourne high school are learning new life skills of first responders. dozens of students are taking part in the two-week camp. the group has to find their own fire gear and a pile of gear. they then have to put it on blindfolded. another group is learning forensics. they're finding and removing fingerprints. leaders say the camp teaches skills and builds bridges between students and first responders. >> we teach them how to respond in an incident that happens maybe t
