we certainly join with you in expressing our absolute abhorrence. >> secretary of state john kerry among leaders around the world reacting to the attack in france that killed 84 people. we're learning the death toll could climb in the day ahead. i'm pobarbara harrison. >> and i'm erika gonzalez. we are also getting new information on this texas father and son killed in nice. what brought the americans to the bastille day celebration and how they are being remembered today. >> the attacks also on the minds of the presidential candidates. donald trump postponed his news conference where he was to announce a running mate. but just

and right now i'm tracking plenty of cloudiness across the area. does this mean a better chance for showers this afternoon? updates in my forecast. france is in a period of national mourning right now for all those people who died in nice. we're learning some major developments now. first that lease now believe the truck live who plowed into a crowd was moham ed bouhlele about 50 people are still between life and death following that attack. 84 others died, including two americans. president obama and leaders around the world have condemned the attack but we still don't know why it happened. here's the latest on the big investigation now under way. >> reporter: a night of carnage and nice waking up to the

devastating attack, the third in just 18 months. it was supposed to be a night of celebration, bastille day, france's most important national holiday, the equivalent of a fourth of july celebration in america. families and tourists were out for the fireworks show. they were enjoying their evening when a man plowed that enormous truck into the crowd at about 10:40 p.m. local time, driving nearly a mile across a busy promenade before he was shot dead by police. an act of terror, according to french president francois hollande, and one that didn't require bombs or explosives to devastate this nation. all it took was a determined attacker. no formal claim of responsibility by any group at this stage, although in the jihadist circles on social media we did see some cheering of this carnage on various pro-islamic state accounts. president barack obama condemning what he said appears to be a horrific terrorist attack in nice and the french president also vowing to step up the military campaign against

cold comfort for the dozens of families mourning in the aftermath of this violence. >> this attack is having an impact around the world not only on security, of course, but on the people who feel a deep connection to the people in europe. this is the third major attack in france in about a year and a half. news4's megan mcgrath is live at the french embassy for us. megan? >> reporter: well, that's right. the "charlie hebdo" attack, the blood shed in paris and now nice. these are difficult times for the people of france and people in our area are voicing their support. people lined up outside the french embassy to get visas and passports this morning. the bloodshed in nice weighing heavily on everyone. >> it's really devastating. it's really sad what happened in nice. and it's not just about france. i think it's happening all over the world and thens

>> reporter: he and his wife have been planning a trip to paris. he's still applying for the visa but may postpone their trip. olivia is keeping her plans. in fact she's relocating to france for graduate school. she's saddened by this latest attack, an unfortunate sign of the times. >> i've lived in d.c. my whole life and you can't escape the worry that something is going to happen. unfortunately that's the world we live in, so you can't let people win. if you have your plans, the best thing you can do, i think, is just keep on with what you plan to do. >> reporter: a few people have left flowers at the gates of the french embassy to show their support for the victims' families. warren schneider, who lives in the neighborhood, showed solidarity by wearing a french flag around his neck like a cape. >> all i'm trying to do is show some support for the people of france. you can do it with words or you can do it with a

you can. they have suffered a terrible tragedy. >> reporter: and homeland security secretary jeh johnson just stopped by literally moments ago to make a statement and to express his condolences. he says this sort of thing happens all too often, and it's a reminder that everyone must stay vigilant. back to you in the studio. a father and son from texas were among the dozens killed in the truck attack in nice. a family representative tells nbc news that the victims were sean copeland and his 11-year-old son, brodie. they were visiting nice as part of their european family vacation. according to a family friend, sean copeland had just run with the bulls just a few days ago in pamplona, spain. >> sean had that -- always had a spi smile on his face, a bubbly personality, always upbeat. his attitude and personality was infectious. >> brodie's little league team posted on facebook this morning saying,

this type of fate, especially not such a wonderful family. i'm aaron gilchrist at the live desk. breaking news coming in just a few minutes ago that donald trump, the presumptive candidate for president has chosen indiana governor mike pence as his running mate. this news had started to come out yesterday and then there was some back and forth about whether that was actually the case. today we have via twitter donald trump tweeting that he has chosen mike pence as his running mate. he will meet in new york with the press tomorrow morning. there originally had been a news conference scheduled for today. instead he will present mike pence to the public as his running mate at 11:00 tomorrow morning. let's go to hallie jackson now, nbc's reporter, with more on who mike pence is. >> reporter: governor mike pence, waking up in new york after a dramatic day in the running mate race. that wild ride, introducing him to america, with many

who exactly is mike pence? >> i'm supporting donald trump because we need change in this country. >> reporter: the indiana governor, a former congressman who rose to a top house leadership role before winning the hoosier state's top job in 2013. he backed senator ted cruz, not trump, in the gop primary. even while insisting back in may he would support the republican nominee. >> reporter: are you hedging your bets? >> no, not in the least. i'm proud to stand with ted cruz in the indiana primary. >> reporter: and it's that support for cruz that could help pence convince skeptical grassroots conservatives to turn out for trump. a christian with strong ties to the evangelical community, pence seen as a safe pick who could get the party's conservative base on board. still his lgbt stance might hurt him in a general election after his support of a controversial religious freedom law. >> one of the great pieces of the legislative history of the religious freedom restorati

bringing people together. >> reporter: while pence and trump are just starting to get to know each other, they haven't always seen eye to eye. pence calling the candidate's proposed muslim ban offensive and unconstitutional. and on trade, a split too. politically not always on the same page but on the personal side, both men appearing often with their families. pence with his three kids and wife karen, a schoolteacher. the two married for more than 30 years. pence grew up in rural indiana, went to college in the hoosier state too and facing a tough re-election fight at home. the national stage perhaps more appealing. pence now stepping into trump's very bright spotlight. >> after much speculation within this past 15 minutes, donald trump himself has tweeted i am pleased to announce that i have chosen governor mike pence as my vice presidential running mate. while it's too soon to say whether there will be added security at

republican convention, that's what cleveland officials told hallie jackson earlier this morning. we know at least 3,000 law enforcement agents on both the state and federal level will descend on the ohio city within the next few days. homeland security director jeh johnson is in cleveland today touring facilities, making sure everything is in place and ready to go for next week. a reminder that news4 will start bringing you coverage live from cleveland this weekend. look for tom sherwood and chris lawrence's live reports from the convention hall beginning sunday night on news4 at 11:00. and now to the democrats. hillary clinton is not giving any hints about who her running mate could be. senator tim kaine joined the democratic presumptive nominee for president at the northern virginia community college yesterday. while at the community college, clinton rolled out her new plan to make debt-free college available to everyone. she also spoke about immigration reform. virginia will be a battleground state this november. new numbers show virginia voters are leaning toward clinton. a

street journal poll came out overnight. clinton is ahead by double digits in virginia. in florida it's a tighter race and she also leads in north carolina and colorado. we have learned each poll has a margin of error of more than three points. new information just released from the white house. the 2016 budget deficit increased by $162 billion. that now stands at $600 billion. budget deficit, the difference between what the federal government spends and what it takes in. and a live look outside at our studios here in northwest washington. you can see plenty of clouds. mostly cloudy skies across the area right now. as we head on into the afternoon hours, a mix of clouds and sunshine. overall, though, i think more clouds than sun and that's going to help keep temperatures cooler today than they were yesterday. 86 right now in the district, 84 in manassas and

gaithersburg. here's a look at the satellite and radar where you can see plenty of clouds across the d.c. metro area. a little bit more sunshine down in parts of southern maryland. when you factor in the humidity, it's still feeling like temperatures are a few degrees warmer. highs today, though, in the low 90s. i've updated these high temperatures from earlier. 93 for a high today in washington. i'll be talking about the weekend coming up next time you see me. >> all right, thanks. developing right now, the fellow officer who shot and killed a prince george's county police officer will not be indicted. this announcement came just minutes ago. in march police say michael ford opened fire in an ambush attack outside the district 3 police station. they say his brothers recorded the shooting on their cell phone. officer colson was killed when a fellow officer mistook him for a suspect during that shootout. all three brothers have been indicted in officer colson's death. a summer outing meant for escaping the heat has

family. fairfax county rescue crews pulled a teen's body from lake barcroft this morning. 16-year-old jeremy munga was swimming with friends and never resurfaced. divers searched the water for hours. the teen's body was found just before 3:00 a.m. this morning. the medical examiner will have to determine what the official cause of death was. and we are learning more about a police shootout this morning. it happened overnight in baltimore. one man is dead. what police say he did as they arrived on the scene. and we've got new information just reased on el man: hey baby, how are you? woman: i have a surprise for you. man: you have a surprise for me? narrator: at dominion, 1 in 5 new hires is a veteran. and when they're away, they miss out on a lot. but they won't miss out on financial support. because we cover any difference between their military pay and their dominion salary, and continue benefits for them

a man is dead from a police shooting right up 95 in baltimore. two baltimore officers are on administrative leave right now. police say they were among four plainclothes officers who heard gunfire in west baltimore last night, so they drove toward that sound. police say the man that started -- the man then started shooting at the officers with a military-style rifle. two officers shot back and at least one of them hit and killed that suspect. hundreds of people are saying good-bye to alton sterling today. he's the man who was shot and killed by police officers in baton rouge, louisiana, last week. his funeral service taking place at noon. it's open

there was quite a long line of people waiting to get in this morning. there were also protests over his death happening right outside that same area. well, it was after another protest that five police officers were killed in dallas. also at noon today, one of those officers will be laid to rest. michael krol served with the dallas police department for nine years. he was 40 years old. his funeral is taking place in michigan where his family lives. more details now on the man responsible for last week's ambush attack against police in dallas. we told you that micah johnson served in the army reserves and deployed to afghanistan. the associated press reports while overseas johnson was accused of stealing a female soldier's underwear. he was later dismissed from the military. people who knew him say he was never the same after that. it will be next week before the fourth officer on trial in the death of freddie gray learns his fate. closing arguments wrapped up yesterday in the trial of lieutenant brian

prosecutors say as shift commander, rice should have been aware of the dangers when officers didn't put a seat belt on gray in a police van. gray died of injuries he sustained in police custody. six officers were charged, two have been acquitted. a third faces a retrial. university of maryland's police chief says video showing his officers pepper spraying students is humiliating. yesterday the chief announced an officer has been suspended and the entire force will go through bias and diversity training. this is cell phone video of that incident that happened back in may. officers used pepper spray twice after responding to what turned out to be a fake call about a fight at an apartment. >> you can argue that i thought it was going to get worse. the bottom line is it never should have gotten to this point. >> university of maryland's president praised the police chief's decision. charges against the people arrested at the

dropped. health news just coming into our newsroom now. the first female-to-male sexual transmission of the zika virus is being reported in new york city. this is the first documented case of sexual transmission of zika from a woman to her sex partner. all previously reported cases have been men spreading the virus to their sex partners. the cdc says all pregnant women who have a sex partner who has traveled to an area with zika should take extra precautions. now to the mystery water flowing down the prince george's neighborhood sidewalk. for three weeks 24 hours a day it just wouldn't stop. residents say the utility company hasn't done enough to find the source, so they contacted consumer reporter susan hogan to get to the bottom of it. >> reporter: morning, noon and night, the water just won't stop. >> a leak but we don't know where it's coming from. >> reporter: frustrations are bubbling ov

live along colfax and cornish streets. >> we thought that maybe it was our homes. >> reporter: neighbors called wssc numerous times, but so far they haven't found the source. >> just to say there's been trucks out and folks look and leave and, you know, no communication. >> reporter: so the water just keeps flowing. >> i feel it's awful that they haven't done anything. >> reporter: fed up with the flowing water, grchshe called n responds. >> i called because i felt like i'd get some help. >> reporter: we contacted wssc. a few hours later they sent out another crew and by the next morning we received an e-mail with an answer. they found the source. in a statement the company says after conducting pressure tests at multiple properties on the pipe segment, it confirmed that the origin of the leak is from the property located on colfax drive. according to wssc, it's the homeowner's responsibility to fix it.

some scary moments for two former presidents. powerful storms forced george w. bush and bill clinton to rush for cover last night in arkansas. they were there along with former british prime minister tony blair to honor graduates. good news that nobody was hurt. well, it was very hot yesterday. i'm hoping we're not going to get up to -- was it the temperature or the humidity? >> it was both. it was the hottest day so far this year. we hit 98 degrees. when you factored in the humidity, it felt like it w

[ gunfire ] 94 people dead after a man drove a truck into a crowd in nice, france, and then was killed in a shootout with police. we are learning much more about those victims. a french prosecutor says more than 200 people were hurt, including 25 who are on life support right now. among those victims, teachers and students, children and parents. a father and son from texas both killed. there are mem yams already taking place around the world. the eiffel tower will be lit red, white and blue, colors of the french flag. at the french embassy here in d.c., we just heard from homeland security secretary jeh johnson. >> this is becoming far too common a ritual for me. just recently belgium, turkey, now france. >> we now know the name of the

suspect, mohammed lel. he is a french citizen but we do not know whether he has been linked to any terrorist groups or terrorism was involved here. when we've got more on that, we'll update you with the breaking news alert via the nbc washington app and right here on nbc4. new details now, federal inspectors say they have discovered more than 100 defects in metro's safe track work zones. metro tells us they have worked to fix 88 of those issues so far. the federal transit administration has not specified what's causing those problems but they say the issues are rated to the first and second surges of metro's safe track program. for the first time you'll be able to find out if the food that you eat contains genetically modified ingredients. president obama is expected to sign legislation that would require most food packages to have a text label, symbol or electric code. critics say some consumers may not be able to

the relief. there's so many ways to eat ice cream, not just out of the carton, which is the way that i like to eat it. joining us to show us some fun ice cream desserts is meredith. thanks for joining us. great to see you as always. there's always room for ice cream, no matter how full you are. it slides in there, right? >> exactly. >> and you have a make-at-home recipe. so what are the ingredients you need to make sure this works at home, though? >> right. you want to make sure you have an ice cream maker. essentially the way that we're going to do this is how we do it at the store. we're going to make a base which will include some milk. >> whole milk? >> yeah. you can do it with other -- skim milk or whatever. >> for texture. >> exactly. so we've got heavy cream, milk -- >> and you need both? milk and heavy cream? >> yes, you do. it's all about the water content that you don't want your ice crystals in the f

to be too big. you want them to be really small. >> and then you put some sugar in there. >> sugar and then a little bit of salt. all you would do is mix this together and put it on your stove over medium heat and bring it to a simmer. >> not a boil. >> not a boil, just a simmer. >> so watch it pretty carefully. >> you're going to want to watch it, exactly. once it comes to a simmer, then temper it into your egg yoklks. >> what does that mean? >> you want to mix it slowly and not all at once or you're going to get scrambled eggs. >> just the egg yolk schlyolk. >> yes. we're looking for the fatty part of the egg, that's the yummy part of the egg. >> for sure. >> at this point you would put all of this back on the stove and you're going to grab your wooden spoon. this is my grandmother's. >> is it really? >> it is. it's my good luck charm. >> that's very special. i love it. >> and then you would essentially mix this.

thickens and essentially you can run your finger across it and you would leave a line on the spin. >> even before you put it in the machine. >> exactly. at that point since we're making a sour cream ice cream, we're going to mix this over our sour cream. >> does it need to cool first or no? >> no. you're going to do this when it would be warm. we'll just emulsify this together. once this comes together, you're going to stick this into a refrigerator or over an ice bath to get it to chill really, really quickly. at that point you would then put it into your ice cream maker. so this one is the one i have at home. it's only $80. this is not an expensive piece of equipment. kitchenaid also makes an attachment that you could use. so those are two really cheap easy things, ways to make ice cream at home. >> you've got some other favorites that you can make desserts using ice cream. it's great on its own and you make your own hot fudge. what else do you like with your ice cream? >> so we have

chocolate float which is our cold brewed chocolate which is a drink that we make. we add some simple syrup, a little soda water and put vanilla ice cream in there. we also make really lovely ice cream sta cream sandwiches. you pick your ice cream and your cookie and have at it. this is the dessert i like doing at home. essentially it's a grilled pound cake with some wine-soaked peaches. today i was going to put on some sour cream sorghum ice cream which is one of my absolute faves. >> i've never heard of that. i'll going to have to try that for sure. >> sorghum, flavorwise it's a cross between maple and molasses. it's really found mostly in the south. it's a syrupy kind of consistency. it lends a little bit of smokiness to that. so for me when i'm doing desserts at home, i want to play with temperature and texture and this dessert really kind of -- >> it's

could you eat it with baked beans? >> i like it by itself because it tastes that good. the bun is something we add to it. if you have a gluten issue, you can eat it without it. >> fattening is it? >> we won't talk about that. it's a hot dog. >> let's talk a little bit about the best condiments for hot dogs. what would you say? >> i've got to tell you, with our hot dogs, i eat our hot dogs plain. i like them plain because i think they have got amazing taste. we've mixed all those great flavors inside of it. but i'd stick with the real simple mustard on this hot dog. >> and you like grilling your hot dogs. i see that you've got some on the grill here. these on the grill look a lot fatter and bigger. are they the same? >> they're the same hotting today. we leave the casing on our hot dogs. it keeps all the flavor and juices inside the hot dogs so there's no dry hot dogs, nothing falling out of them. >> i like the casing, that's what makes them so crisp, right. >> a little snap to it.
