later today is coming up in a few minutes. we are following breaking news at 6:02. one person dead following a crash in camp springs. investigators are on the scene. they have shut down the area around the 6300 block of temple hill roads. two cars collided after 11:00. investigators are trying to figure out what caused the crash. the driver had minor injuries. no word on the identity of the victims. new developments. turkey's president told the nation he is in charge and a coup will not succeed. forces have been detained in a true attempt that brought a night of explosions and gunfire which left 194 people killed. we hear that death toll is growing. nbc is following the development

overseas. >> reporter: dramatic scenes in the city of turkey. gunfire and explosions rocked the main city, istanbul and the capitol in a chaotic night. government officials vowed to put down the coup attempt. >> people were running up in main square, up the main street, the side street to take shelter, to try to avoid military presence. >> unity. >> the president vowed the coup plotters would not succeed. crowds defied a curfew order to support him. they told u.s. citizens in turkey to stay in their homes. john kerry who met friday with russian officials spoke with president obama by phone. the white house said they agreed all parties in turkey should support the democratically voted government. in

morning, there were indications the coup was crumbling. two loud explosions were heard near istanbul where police and military we are exchanging fire. large clouds greeted the president as he returned to istanbul's airport. >> translator: i could say that this is actually a time -- a gift from god to us because this will help us clean our military. 2010 mayoral scandal will avoid jail time. he's expected to be sentenced to home confinement and a fine. prosecutors argue he set up an illegal fund to elect then mayor gray. they announced they would not charge gray who recently won a primary election for a council seat. he will be formally sentenced next month. overnight, the virginia state police issued an amber alert for two people in washington county. they are looking for a 9-month-old little girl. they are both in extreme danger and last seen in virginia with 38-year-old julie. they say they may be in a 2009 white cadillac with tennessee plates. if you spot them, call 911. the case of the fire, the prince george's county police officer who shot and killed a

michael opened fire in an ambush attack outside the district. his brothers recorded the shooting on their phones. undercover officer, coleson was killed when a fellow officer mistook him for a suspect during the shootout. all three brothers have been indicted in the death. an armed man is dead in baltimore after police shot him. baltimore police say the man fired and multiple officers on thursday night. we have the latest from baltimore. >> reporter: baltimore police don't know why this man turned an ar-15 rifle on four officers thursday night. >> based on the information we have right now, we don't believe it was an ambush. >> reporter: four plain clothes officers wearing vests that say police on front and back heard gunfire and drove

it feels to watch yourself being dehumanized. >> he apologized to the court and the community. he let his guard down and hopes everyone, including the family will be able to forgive him. a high profile lawsuit filed in the death of a maryland college football player is being settled. he died in 2011 after collapsing in practice with a head injury. two years later, the family filed suit against the ncaa. coaches, as well as a helmet maker. the case was scheduled to go to trial in june. records show that maryland's attorney general recommended a 50,000 dlarls settlement to close the suit. no word on if or when the ncaa would contribute. the family lawyers confirm they are working to settle this case. a couple things you are going to need for sure, sunscreen and the
