new tonight, a vigil for a teen who died at a lake. and i'm in downtown cleveland where security is extremely tight ahead of the republican national convention. we'll be bringing it all to you live from cleveland. news 4 tat 11:00 begins. the men on your screen are the three police officers shot and killed today in baton rouge. one of those officers leaves behind a 4-month old child. another had been on the force less than a year. and that spreads to kansas city where the shooter lived. jay gray has more on the investigation. community. >> it's a call withiing for us. we realize that the community doesn't have a lot of trust in that. >> this is not about black and white. it's about wrong and right. this as no kinship to our civil rights struggle. there must be no attempt toe to speak in that direction. >> one of those in the meeting knew one of the officers killed. tim kaine released a statement. he said the shooting in baton rouge was an atrocity and all must condemn it. he also said his heart goes out to law enforcement everywhere. people have been stopping by the national law enforcement memorial all day.

city for an event that will be watched by the entire world. the security unprecedented. nbc's hallie jackson had a look at the final preparationes and the po the politics heading into the convention. it appears that we don't have hali this evening. so we are now going on to, we continue our team coverage, i should say, on the convention with chris lawrence who is in cleveland to show us the strong law enforcement presence. according to the mayor, the city is prepared. >> reporter: well, erica, so far tonight it is quiet. and the cleveland police and officials would like to keep it that way. take a look behind my. you can see that black fence, the secret service officers standing in front of it. that is an 8 foot tall steel fence that cuts right through the heart of downtown. on one side is a secure

i can tell you, it is extremely intensive. on the other side is everybody else. and that is encircling part of downtown. part of the perimeter that is constantly changing leading up to the convention. the mayor said he didn't want his city to come off looking like a police state, but at the same time, they want to be prepared. cleveland got millions in federal aid to put more officers on the street and give them the latest equipment. they are now equipped with well over 1,000 sets of riot gear and batons, 24 new sets of bullet-proof gear as well, preparing for the worst, hoping for the betst. even with all the discord within the republican party, this is a night of celebration. a lot of the delegates we spoke with from maryland and virginia are heading out to party and celebrate what should be an eventful week that none o

>> and look for chris and tom sherwood's report tomorrow, and throughout the rnc convention. new at 11:00. an underage drinking party in rockville turned deadly after one of the party-goers drowned. two adult brothers through the party at a house on wine grove court. somebody called 911 after finding a 25-year-old unresponsive in the swimming pool. arrival officers found several extremely intoxicated people inside and large amounts of alcohol. they arrested ten people for underage drinking. the hosts of the party are facing charges. a man was walking outside the crosswalk on university boulevard in langley park. about 2:30 this morning. we've learned that two other cars almost hit that pedestrian before the police cruiser did. the officer immediately got out and rendered aid, but the man died on

guards shot. they were sitting in their cars near the addison road metro station. the other officer survived. they believe he was ambushed and is asking people to come forward. >> he was at work, doing his job, trying to take care of his kids, protecting the neighborhood. it was not a time that he didn't help the neighbors in the neighborhood. you guys know something. come forward. >> reach out to anyone who knows anything. even those that take a part in this. >> kennard left behind a little girl. she is now 2 years old. firefighters in phoenix, drilling through the bars in a storm drain to rescue two people. the man and woman got sucked in while trying to save a dog. they crawled for miles overnight until somebody heard their screams. it took about an hour for firefighters to get them out.
