the parkway. breaking news in prince george's county, right now. police are still on the scene of a fatal accident that's shut down part of suitland parkway at naylor road. derrick ward is live near the scene now for the latest details. derek -- derrick, good morning. >> reporter: yeah, you don't normally associate the suitland parkway with pedestrian traffic. this is the scene of a fatal incident. it remains closed. suitland parkway is closed between alabama and branch avenue. it was about midnight when an adult male was crossing here at naylor road when he was hit background a car heading westbound, that is into the district. that person has since died. they don't have an identity yet. they have held the scene. accident reconstruction crews are on the scene and traffic is shut down in both directions. you will likely have to work your way through the neigh

avenue, alabama avenue. we don't have any word how long this will remain closed and how long this investigation will continue, but again adult male is dead after being hit by a car here at suitland parkway and naylor road. we believe the car stayed on the scene. we'll get confirmation on that. back to you. thank you. this morning we're following that developing story out of baton rouge. three law enforcement officers were shot and killed responding to a call yesterday. 32-year-old montrell jackson had been a cop for ten years. he and his wife just welcomed a baby boy. 41-year-old matthew gerald had been on the force less than a year. and brad garafola had been a sheriffs deputy in east baton rouge for 24 years. he was 45 years old. bullets started flying when the officers were called to a gas station less than a mile from police headquarters. >> shots fired officer down! shots fired, officer d

>> the original call came in yesterday afternoon for reports of a man with an assault rifle. officials say the officers were ambushed when they arrived. the suspect died in the shoot-out with police. three other officers were hurt. one remains in critical condition. the shooting comes ten days after five dallas police officers were kill by a sniper. tensions have been high in baton rouge since the shooting did death of a black man by white police. police have identified the gunman as 29-year-old gavin long from kansas city, missouri. yesterday was his 29th birthday. he served as a sergeant in the marine corps and was deployed to iraq. motives are unclear. police are investigating whether anyone helped him to carry out the attack. two people were detained yesterday but have been released. president obama addressed the shooting from the white house calling it an attack on every american. >> we as a nation have to be loud and clear that nothing justifies violence

it is after 5:00. problem on the red line. unscheduled track work. trains are single tracking between bethesda and van nest. a group of people taken hostage spent some terrifying hours inside a baltimore burger king on sunday. police officers spotted a rape suspect at 11:00 a.m. the suspect ran into a nearby burger king. he held four people hoxing including a seven-year-old girl. around 5:00 p.m., he was finally taken into custody. he was wanted for a rape that happened 24 to 48 hours prior to the hostage incident. happening today. we're expecting a verdict in the trial against baltimore police officer brian rice. he is one of the officers charged in the death of freddie gray. he faces manslaughter, wreckless endangerment and misconduct

charges. his death sparked row tests. we're finding out about another american who died in the bass still day attack in france. nicholas leslie was a student at u.c. berkley. he was 20 years old. investigators are still working to identify all of the victims in the attack. six people are in custody for questioning. austin, texas, is mourning the two other americans killed in nice. sean copeland and his son, brodie. dozens of people attended a prayer vigil for them last night. many wore red and black. the colors of brodie's baseball team. developing right now, a suspect on that ambush on police officers in baton rouge is dead, but it is going to take an investigation before police figure out exactly what happened. three police officers were shot and killed yesterday. nbc's jay gray is live in baton rouge with more. good morning. >> reporter: this is our first look at where it all unfolded. a

doctors say this is the most dangerous time of the summer when it comes to drowning. more than 280 toddlers die each year when they fall into pools. kids often don't make a sound when it happens, so it is critical for parents to keep an eye on their children. stephen parks has been the manager of the greenbelt aquatic center for nine years. he says too many parents think life guards will do the job for them. >> parents come in and they think life guards are baby-sitters and we're not. a lot of parents will sit on the deck and play on the phones or do whatever and not pay attention. >> park says the rule at greenbelt is you must get in the pool with your child and keep them within arms reach if they can't swim. we've created a checklist of critical things that parents need to look for at the pool to keep their kids alive. you can find it on our nbc washington app and on news 4 at 6:00, the i team is going to show you why one

honor. charles kettle led helicopter fights evacuating soldiers under the threat of gunfire. he repeatedly returned tie landing zone under heavy fire. he is credited with saving the lives of 40 soldiers and the four crew members on the helicopter. by this afternoon, we expect to have a clearer picture of the future of laurel regional hospital. our bureau chief tells us the county executive and laurel's mayor are set to speak today. the hospital was changed to a walk-in outpatient center. hundreds of people lost their jobs there. the decision to down-size came from dimensions health care system, a nonprofit hospital system and without the approval of elected officials. zblp it is 5:36. a man is dead after a golf cart accident in spotsylvania county. deputies do not suspect foul play.

mh-370. the that is the malaysian airliner that disappeared back in 2014. apparently, this possible piece of the plane was found on an east african island a month ago. that island is in australia and me lags investigators saying they are examining it right now in march of 2014, mh-370 vanished in the southern indiana ocean. a virginia man could learn his sentence today for killing a fellow rock climber. prosecutors say david di paulo pleaded guilty earlier this year. paulo plead guilty of killing jeffrey ferare in 2013. he could receive ten to 15 years in prison. there is new information involving a pedestrian accident involving a police
