the left lane getting by. this is a huge delay early this morning. also rail riders just be aware of the red line is single tracking. orange, blue and silver line delays, because of a signal problem. developing morning, traffic moving again on suitland parkway after a fatal pedestrian accident. we're told a man was hit and killed as he crossed the street near the naylor road intersection. we're not sure if he was in the crosswalk there. traffic was shut down in both directions for several hours. traffic just reopened within the last 30 minutes. a developing story now out of baton rouge where a community is mourning the loss of three law enforcement officers. 32-year-old montrell jackson had been an officer since he was 22 years old. friends called him passionate about his job. 41-year-old magazine ewe -- matthew gerald had been on the force for less than a year

sheriffs deputy for 24 years. he was 45 years old. yesterday afternoon officers were called to a gas station less than a mile away from police headquarters for reports of a man with a gun. when they arrived. the officers were ambushed withen gunfire. three officers were hurt in a shoot out with the suspect. one remains in critical condition. tensions are high in baton rouge since the shooting death of a black man by white police. the baton rouge police department now has the difficult task of investigating a suspect accused of killing three of their own. he's been identified as 29 gavin long from kansas city. he served as a sergeant in the marine corps and was deployed to iraq. his motives are unclear. police in missouri raided his home yesterday. they were looking for clues. pleats -- police are investigating whether anyone else helped long to carry out

two people were detained yesterday and they were since released. this deadly shooting comes at a time when the relationship between police departments and the black community is strained. right now, the national black law enforcement conference is meeting here in d.c. to work on this issue. with more, kristen wright is live at the national officers memorial this morning. >> reporter: good morning. there are flowers here dedicated to the baton rouge police officers who were killed. the rest of the flowers here are mostly for the five dallas police officers who were killed. so today we're certainly going to be seeing more of this compassion and calls for peace. now, as aaron mentioned, there's a group in town, very timely for their annual conference today. some of the highest ranking black members of law enforcement are in washington this week for a training conference. it's the national organization of black law enforcement

today they are going to talk about police and citizen encounters and how to build trust. noble's men and women in blue are in a really interesting position as african-american and law enforcement. lynn to what the -- listen to what the president of that group says about that. >> we've been african-american all of our lives. that part is easy. the other part, more important, we chose to be in a law enforcement. it's a calling for us. we recognize the community right now is not having a lot of faith in law enforcement. in particular instances, we're here to bridge the gap. >> coming up later in the hour, more on what noble has to say about the pressing and complex issues involving police and communities across the country. back to you. the death of these three brave officers under score the dangers police around the country confront every single day. we a

and clear that nothing justifies violence against law enforcement. >> president obama called it an attack on every american. he said americans need to avoid overheated rhetoric. police departments and politicians are reacting. one response we've seen from virginia senator tim kaine here, he says his heart goes out to the police everywhere and that families worry when they leave for a daily shift about whether they will come home safely. and he called it an atrocity. also we're hearing from police departments around our region. this is from the alexandria police department. they are saying here in this tweet that the department is thinking of the baton rouge police department and their community during this difficult time and finally montgomery county police here saying that our thoughts and prayers are with baton rouge and that in va lor, there is hope. you can see more reaction on our app. just search baton rouge shooting.

6:06 your time right now and we're just hours away from the first day of the convention. we want to show you some pictures now from the quicken loans arena in cleveland. the presumptive presidential nominee donald trump and thousands of republicans will discuss the future of the party over the next four days. each day has a theme that branches off of donald trump's campaign logan, make america great again. today's speakers will focus on safety. tomorrow's -- tomorrow's talk will be on the economy and on wednesday, governor mike pence will have a chance to address the convention as well. the vice-presidential candidate now is set to talk about putting america first and finally on thursday, trump himself will take the stage and share his plans for the country for ifying the country, tom sherwood is in cleveland already with a preview.

>> reporter: i'm tom sherwood, welcome to cleveland. a mix of the old and the new and this week the home of the republican national convention. virginia republicans from across the state were arriving here sunday, recognizing theirs as a battleground state against democrat hillary clinton. >> it's important that we have success this year and build on it and keep it moving next year. >> the world is in chaos a little bit today but i think we'll get things squared away and we'll leave out of here with the person who will win the election. >> reporter: behind the scenes, a lot is going on. here's something you won't see but it's very important. the media center. at the convention center, thousands of journalists from all over the world, working to bring you the convention news this week. our office is down there somewhere. in cleveland, tom sherwood, news 4. tom and chris lawrence are covering the convention for us this week. you can expect live reports from them starting this afternoon on news 4 at 4. it is 6:07

rice could learn his fate. rice is one of officers charged in the death of freddie gray. he faces manslaughter, reckless endangerment and misconduct charges. his bench trial ended on thursday. a push today to raise the minimum wage in montgomery county. under current law it will increase to $11.50 an hour by july of 2017 but some county representatives want to go beyond that and raise wages to $15 an hour by 2020. the county council's committee will meet for a second time today on that proposal. bracing for heat and humidity. chuck bell is tracking the threat for storms at 6:11. making your commute a little smoother, the improvements that are in the works for one of our busy highways. plus dealing with tragedy. we've had a lot of it in the news lately and we'll show you the best ways to cope.

in today's crowd is france's prime minister. we'll have much more the nice attack coming up. stay with us. we're hearing from a friend of one of officers who was shot and killed yesterday in baton rouge. >> he was a father. he was a husband. he chose to be a police officer. we all know that's it's not the highest paying job in the world. for somebody wanting to go do that job and making that amount of money, has to be in your heart. has to be something you want to do. >> montrell jackson had been a cop since he was 22 years old. his friend says baton rouge may be ben but it's not broken. three other officers were hurt in the shooting. one remains in critical condition. now in in the past two week there have been four deadly shootings that scr captured -- have captured national media attention. >> it's difficult to process all that's happeninglp and it can b difficult to talk to your children about what's

dr. robb jacob-lash joins us now. kids are watching and trying to make sense of what's happening. >> it's important that your first line of defense is allowing your child to field whatever emotion you are feeling. when you get into a space of trying to suppress emotions it creates more anxiety. allow them to have those feelings, allow them to cry and be scared and teach them that it's okay to feel whatever you feel, but it's what you do with those emotions when you are in the space that matters. having an in-depth conversation with them increases the honesty and trust that they will have with you. >> do you sort of have to weigh, you know, where your kid is and what sort of questions they come to you with before you get -- before you have a deep conversation? >> yeah. absolutely. you want to make sure that it's age appropriate and another thing is is that be careful in terms of having the news cycle on all day because some children may see it as

opposed to to it just being one event and they may not be able to understand it's the recurring news cycle. being careful what you let them see and how much you let them see makes all the difference in the world. >> these are some weighty issues that are affecting our country and they are also teaching moments. how do you balance what information is appropriate and important for a child and his and her development? >> kids are going to talk and they are going to take on whatever personality you have in regards to the situation. so being very careful in how you -- because you have to understand parents are the first teacher, so whatever emotions that the parents are experiencing, the child is going to take on those emotions. so i would encourage parents to be very careful about any negative statements that you may make because your child is listening. your child is going to internalize that and also you want to also make sure that you give them toolsof

at the end of the day, we want you to come home safe so what does that look like and doing role playing with your children, showing them, you know, how to respond to officers. if you see something, say something, to be vigilant. >> appreciate you coming in today. we'll put this on our website. thank you. >> thank you so much. more news about the other tragedy, the bastille today -- day attack in nice france, we've learned a third american was one of the victims. nicholas leslie was a student at u.c. berkley. he was 20 years old. investigators are still working to identify all of the victims of the bastille day attack. in austin, texas, they are mourning the two other americans killed. sean copeland and his son, brodie.

prayer vigil for them last night. many wore red and black. the colors of brodie's baseball team. virginia residents can learn more about the threat of the zika virus. there's a series of meetings tonight. the first is mason district in annandale that begins at 7:30. by this afternoon, we expect to have a clearer picture of the future of laurel regional hospital. our bureau chief tells us the county executive and laurel's mayor are set to speak today. the hospital was changed to a walk-in outpatient center. the decision to down-size came from dimensions health care system, a nonprofit hospital system and without the approval of elected officials. 6. . 18. pokemon go is just about everywhere, including on the road and some clever drivers are coming up with ways to track down pokemon without becoming a distracted driver. a north carolina uberdriver is charging people $25 an hour to be their personal driver for the game. he calls it the poke-taxi. chad davis will take you to all of the poke-stops in t

at the scene with more on what happened. first, a busy day for the storm team as we remain stuck in this heat wave. we're already seeing temperatures in the high 70s and it's only getting worse. storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell has your 4 things to know. good morning. >> day six in a row in this current stretch of high temperatures. we'll be in the mid 90s again did he under a mostly clear but hazy sky out there. mild, humid start. thunderstorm chances are at 60% later this afternoon. i'll show you the timing on the high resolution computer model coming up in a few more minutes. there is a brief cooldown coming our way in the middle of the week. we'll be back into the steamer by thursday, friday, into the week. today's high, 94 in manassas, 95 in fredericksburg and 96 in washington. ten-day forecast coming up. you are not going to like it, jack. it's going to be a hot one. >> tons and tons of hot. i hear what you are saying. on the freeway, going westbound, we have two trouble spots

and the third street tunnel. both on the left side of the freeway. transportation authorities are aware and trying to get all travel lanes back open. on metro morning, the red lines no longer single tracking. the orange, blue, and silver line, there was a sill -- signal problem. delays on 95. southbound, a crash near center port parkway. left side of the roadway is getting by. developing this morning, traffic moving again after a man was hit and killed on suitland parkway. derrick ward is live near the intersection where the accident happened. he has the latest. derrick. >> reporter: good morning. take a look at the intersection. traffic is indeed flowing smoothly there. it was a different scene earlier this morning and of course late last night. it was about midnight when police say an adult male was crossing the suitland parkway here at naylor road when he was hit by a car traveling westbound. we believe that car did stop

the investigation ensued. the victim died, and the investigation started shortly after the accident happened. now, a car was tow away from here about sun rise today. that looks like part of an investigation that was being trailed by prince george's county police cruiser. this had traffic closed on suitland parkway and naylor road for several hours. it has reopened. things returned to normal. we don't have any more information about the accident that happened early this morning. there is a sidewalk and apartments on the other side, directly at the naylor road station. lots of reasons for pedestrians to be crossing there. lots of need for caution as we heard from people who cross this street regularly. we're live at the intersection of suitland parkway and naylor road. back to you. new details on another deadly pedestrian accident, this time involving a prince george's coin police cruiser.

morning near the intersection of rigs road and university boulevard in langley park. two other cars nearly hit the pedestrian before the police cruiser did. officials tell us the vic was not in the crosswalk at the time of the accident. he died on the scene. in montgomery county, a cyclist is dead after being hit by a car. this happened 1:30 sunday afternoon at veers mill road and turkey branch parkway. the cause of that crash is under investigation. back to our coverage now of the republican national convention. here's a live look at the sun starts to come up over cleveland. that is the sight of this week's talks. the convention kicks off this morning and runs through thursday and with more on what to expect this upcoming week, nbc news political director chuck todd and the moderator of "meet the press" joins us live from cleveland. good morning. >> good morning. >> what should we expect, this

>> well, it is not going to be -- this is not our parents republican convention, that's for sure. this is going to be a little bit different. i would say that get used to hearing and the next speaker is something trump. there's going to be six different trumps that have been identified as key speakers during the convention night. it starts tonight with melania trump. you'll see a lot of trumps, but you won't see anybody with the last name of bush, romney, mccain. it is sort of striking how many -- that you could put together your own alternative republican convention with a speakers lineup that would look like a traditional republican convention, but you are not going to see that here this week. one thing to look forward today is if there is going to be any never trump protests or things like that on the floor of the convention by delegates, today is the day we would see that. that's when they start some of the business side of the

enforcement officers. 32-year-old montrell jackson had been a cop for ten years. 41-year-old matthew gerald had been on the force less than a year and brad garafola was 45 years old. the suspected shooter is dead but it's going to take a long investigation on why this happened. jay has more on the investigation. >> reporter: this is where it all unfolded. a rolling gun battle from this car wash spilling into the parking lot of the convenience store here. investigators still looking for evidence and answers here, trying as you talk about, to figure out some kind of motive in this attack. they also want to know if the suspect here, gan eugene long had any help in either preparing or carrying out the attack here. they are looking not only at the physical evidence here,ut

on the economy and on wednesday, indiana governor mike pence will have his chance to address the convention. the vice-presidential candidate is set to talk about putting america first and on thursday finally trump himself will take the stage and share his plans to unify the country. nbc's tracies potts is live with now what to expect in cleveland today and the security behind the convention. tracie. >> reporter: hey, yeah. you were just talking about the theme today, make america safe again. they will be talking about things like isis and immigration and benghazi, melania trump among the headliners for tonight. outside this arena, security is a big concern. they got 50,000 people expected in town this week with about 5,500 officers, many from outside of cleveland to protect them. we're in what's called the secure zone. open carry weapons not allowed here, but they are in the greater downtown area and that's something the police union is concerned about. after what happened in louisiana, they have asked the
