>> reporter: melania trump's speechwriter took the blame for, she said, not noticing michelle obama's quotes in monday night's speech. the speech writer is not fired. donald trump tweeted all press is good press. mike pence addresses the convention tonight, to reassure conservatives about trump. when trump got the nomination last night. >> congratulations, dad. we love you! >> the support from don, ivanka, eric and tiffany trump left an impression about their dad, donald, that lingers with delegates in cleveland. and they hope with voters. >> if the kids who know him the best think that much of him, how can we think less? >> it's refreshing to see family values. that's what we're about as a republican party. >> reporter: eric trump speaks tonight along with the tough primary rival who donald trump used to call lying ted cruz.

chris lawrence continues our coverage from cleveland with a story about a couple hoping to change that. chris? >> donald trump says latinos love him, that he can make inroads with african-american voters. the poll numbers don't bear that out but we ran into a couple from alexandria who are determined to prove him right. a month ago, bruce cleveland wouldn't have been caught dead in this shirt. now she's hoping to sway more voters his way. were you a trump supporter from the get go? >> no. of course not. at first it seemed like he was a clown. the clown has taken off his makeup and has the real man showing. >> reporter: ruth and her husband came to cleveland, thinking of the things that trump said. building a wall with mexico, banning muslims, how did that initially go over with you? >> at first it was like running your nails down a

fired up and ready to go. boy, the numbers are stacked against them. nearly 2,500 delegates here in cleveland. only about 80 of them are african-american. doreen, back to you. >> chris lawrence in cleveland. thank you, chris. one theme during this year's rnc is our military heroes and honoring our veterans. we've already seen several members of the military speak at the convention throughout the primary. donald trump says he wants to improve the veterans administration. ahead in our next half hour, tom sherwood will look at the military vote, particularly in virginia, where half of federal funds for the state are spent. members of the d.c. chapter of a group called black youth 100. they organized a protest that blocked part of massachusetts avenue in northeast d.c. today. they also blocked the entrance to the legislative office of the fraternal order of police. protesters accuse the organization of actively

opposing legislation, that calls for police accountability and transparency. we've asked for a comment but have not heard back from them yet. >> they came from across the country. black police officers marching to howard university in honor of their fallen colleagues. community members and teenagers joined in to rebuild ties in light of the recent tension and police shootings. news 4's meagan fitzgerald is live in howard university. meagan? >> doreen, these officers were in town to participate in a conference. we're told this march was particularly important for them and for many community members who watched this morning, they say it's a gesture they believe will go far. the recent tragedies in dallas and baton rouge are just reminders of how dangerous policing can be. >> lord, we thank you for this gathering. >

mapleview place. the suspects and victim appeared to share a friendly greeting. seconds later there's an all-out attack. the victim was knocked to the ground, punched and kicked. the suspect got away with his wallet, his phone and his passport. power issues kept metro from doing any physical work on the tracks at the start of this latest safe track surge. that happened this morning. the latest round focuses on the silver and orange lines between boston and east falls church. they had to switch power to certain sections of the tracks which meant work crews had to be kept clear of the tracks for safety reasons. that issue was repaired after 10:00 this morning, after the rush hour. trains will be single tracking between the two stations for the next 12 days. attacked on the streets of d.c. how a good samaritan stepped in to help a man moments after he was robbed

a giant tree came within a few feet of destroying a couple's home. that wasn't the only close call in a bethesda neighborhood hit hard by those storms last night. chris gordon is live with a closer look at some of the damage. chris? >> reporter: this tree has closed this street all day. it nearly hit the home of a bethesda couple. tree crews could only clear part of this giant branch. it's bigger than many trees in the neighborhood. it was torn down when the storm hit bethesda last night. power and phone lines are strewn across the drive. >> all of a sudden, we had about 30 seconds of huge flashes and incredible thunder. and i heard the snap.

it was like a bomb had gone off. >> peter dolan and his wife were in the upstairs bedroom of their home when the branch hit the gutter on the corner of his roof. >> i can't overemphasize how fortunate i feel. had this tree been maybe ten feet farther to the left into our house, it would have seriously damaged not just the roof but the structure as well. >> few blocks away, the storm caused another close call. lightning struck the siding this house on snow point drive, setting it on fire. robin wexler, who lives across the street, tells me neighbors put the flames out with a fire extinguisher. >> they told me last night, the policemen and firemen told me last night this house could have blown up, had they not put the fire out, and taken some houses next door with it. >> no one was home at the time that lightning struck this house. 14-year-old jonathan mazen, who lives across the street, was on his phone, looking out of his

an announcement moments ago on the p.a. system basically telling passengers that the system is gone again. take a walk with me over here. go to the southwest airlines website and it says we're working hard to get you where you want to be. but the system is down right now. now, a lot of folks tell me that they're trying to get home. this computer system glitch has caused a lot of emotions at reagan national airport. computer issues grounded southwest flights for about an hour nationwide. southwest airline officials say there were issues as a result of an outage on multiple systems. back here at regulagan national folks are waiting to see if their flights are going to take off. back to you. >> shomari stone at reagan national airport.

have you been ifpaying tolls illegally? that's the focus of a new lawsuit. it's also putting the washington airports authority under the microscope. adam tuss is along the toll road with details. hi, adam. >> reporter: hey, doreen. this lawsuit claims hundreds of millions of dollars should go back into those who paid the tolls here. should your toll money be used to fund metro? drivers are split on that issue. >> i'm not a metro person. i don't like taking the metro. >> if it reduced traffic that would be a good thing especially for residents in this area. >> reporter: airports authority which operates the dulles toll road is using to

help fund the silver line and attorney robert cynkar says it's wrong. >> money is being taken from folks for mode of transportation that they're not using and never used. that seems unfair to folks. >> reporter: hundreds of millions of dollars, he says, should go back into pockets of every driver who has used the dulles toll road in recent years. he's also taking aim at the airports authority which he says has no true oversight. >> if they take money from you, you get to vote the bums out if you don't like what they're doing. this authority is structured to be independent from all other forms of government. they have no check on them. no one can vote them out. they're like little emperors within the facility. >> reporter: they're not elected but are appointed by the u.s. president, governors of maryland and virginia and the mayor of d.c. they declined comment on this case because it's angoing legal matter. the toll has risen to $2.

a man with a knife was trying to rob the victim. one witness ran over to stop the attack as another shot the video on his cell phone, on massachusetts avenue in northwest right across from the marriott marquis. that robber is still on the loos loose. >> family of a toddler killed by an alligator at disney world is not going to sue the result. it happened, pardon me, last month outside the grand floridian hotel. an alligator grabbed 2-year-old lane graves and grabbed him into a lagoon. the boy's body was not recovered until the next day. his parent live in nebraska and released a stant
