it could get dangerously warm this week. we're already above 75 degrees. and only going to get hotter. good morning, everybody. it's 5:00 a.m. right now. i'm aaron gilchrist. >> i'm eun yang. chuck bell is standing by to tell us more about what we can expect. triple digits, is that right? >> the feels-like factor will be over 100 degrees for most the next four, perhaps five or six days. this is really a prolonged heat wave event we're going to be dealing with. outside this morning, the air quality is getting a whole lot worse out there. code orange air quality. unhealthy for sensitive groups today. take it easy. currently we're in the upper 60s and low 70s. each day it's going to get worse in the mornings and in the afternoon. we'll be nearly 90 by lunchtime today. as far as any chance for cooling thunderstorm, here's future weather by 5:00 this

isolated showers to be dealing with, but certainly your rain chances today stand at 30% at the most. how about tomorrow storm chances? more about that coming up in a few more minutes. here is jack taylor at wtop. chuck, thank you. it's the outer loop of the beltway we've got our first hiccup, the springfield interchange headed from the robinson terminal, toward van dorn. we've got an accident. virginia state authorities remain on the scene with a single right lane getting by. they are trying to condense this. volume is light and not causing a huge delay. rock creek parkway work continuing down around the kennedy center. traffic is getting by alternating. one lane of travel on the southbound side carrying the north and southbound load. at this point getting a little heavier but still no delay at this point. back to you. starting today you'll begin to feel some extreme heat as we soar into the 90s and possibly reach the 100 mark over the weekend.

dangerous and even deadly. megan mcgrath is live with how our region is preparing for the heat. >> reporter: not too bad right now but that's going to change in a matter of hours as this heat wave kicks in. it's going to be very, very hot over the weekend and into monday. this is the kind of heat that can actually be dangerous. fire houses around the district like the one you see behind me here, they are expecting to see a spike in the number of emergency calls related to the heat and they are doing a few things to account for that. first of all, they are starting today they are going to add five extra ambulance and medic units to handle that spike that they are expecting in calls and they are also going to be asking people to take some precautions and these are the sort of the things that we hear every time we see the heat, the mercury really rise here and a lot of it is common sense. limit your time outdoors during especially the really hot times of the day,

limit your exercise to the early morning hours or after the sun starts to set when it cools down, and also know the symptoms for heat-related illnesses. >> what to watch for is early symptoms like thirst, dizziness, it can progress if there's confusion, nausea, it could indicate more severe heat injury. if it gets worse than that, it could even be fatal. >> . >> reporter: in the district, spray parks will be open until 9:00 tonight. also cooling centers around the district with people without air conditioning. use some common sense out there and stay hydrated. back to you in the studio. we've got some breaking news here at the live desk. a chicago police officer rushed to the hospital after a man pulls out a gun and shoots him. we're just getting word about the incident that happened last night near soldier field. authorities got the call that a man was seen behaving

it. many some of these folks were up working the late shift or they had to be in bed so they could make this shift. we have talk to some folks. i have some of the highlights speech. first of all, there were 76 minutes and that's the second longest in recent history and it brought up a lot of the tones, a lot of things that we've been hearing from this campaign, painted sort of a dark picture of america and nominee donald trump said he was the only person that could fix it. one of the key things or phrases that come away from that speech was when he said i am your voice. we had one person who didn't see the speech but has a good sense about what either party needs to do. >> i think we're going to rebuild the middle class. we need to. we need to have everybody participate in this economy, and we got to -- we got to take cost of government and reduce it every year. >> a lot of opinions lying around here. being in the city that we're in

them openly at least to us and stuff. we're hearing a lot and this is top of mind for everyone. i think we'll be getting used to this for a the next few months. north carolina is losing out on a big boost to the economy next year as the nba decides to pull its all-star game out of charlotte. the nba is pulling its all-star game that was plan inspect charlotte. the league decided to relocate the event because of the so-called bathroom bill which requires transgender people to only use the bathroom which matches the sex on their birth certificate. the governor says the law has been misrepresented. we should find out a new location for the 2017 game the next few weeks. rupert murdoch will take the reins of fox news following the resignation of roger ailes. ails will step down. it follows a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by gretchen carlson. he has denied

our region will have some money to help fight the zika virus. the centers for disease control is awarding $60 million nationwide. maryland will see $1.4 medical of that money. nearly $250,000 will go to d.c. the money will be available starting in august. florida is getting $6 million of federal funding to investigate zika. it comes as the state is investigating its second possible zika case not related to travel. julia bagg has the latest in miami. >> hi there, and good morning to you. the big concern here in south florida with these two miami area cases, how did these people become infected? did it happen with a mosquito bite? it also could have been a sexual transmission as well, but if it is indeed a mosquito bite, that says a lot about the mosquitos in south florida. that could mean

mosquitos here are already transmitting the virus. up to now, scientists say that the mosquitos capable of trans mimting this virus have been in florida for a long time, but so far they have not been known to transmit the virus. this could be a big deal if that is indeed the case. if these are mosquito borne cases of the zika virus. the rest of the cases, more than 300 in florida have been acquired elsewhere. someone traveled to a place, a country like brazil perhaps where there is zika and returned home and become sick. the symptoms generally last 7 to 10 days and, of course, there are devastating birth defects. >> julia bagg live in miami for us. thank you. summertime for kids is camp time, one is

the claims that donald trump made last night during his speech. can you talk a little bit about that? >> yes. overall, the fact-checking actually seems to be pretty accurate. there are some areas where he left information out but for the most part his numbers seem to be on point. here's an exception. when he talked about immigrants committing crimes, he was talking about sanctuary cities. it turns out the fact is first native-born americans actually commit for crimes than first-generation immigrants whether they are legal or illegal in this country. the other thing we're taking a look at this morning is foreign policy. he talked about hillary clinton supporting natfa and the trans pacific trade partnership. as you know, she's flipped on tppt and says she doesn't support that. he also failed to mention that his running mate mike pence also supported it. >> tracie, thank you. d.c. mayor muriel bowser is reacting to some of trump's cot

some of the killings are high. our news desk check and found they are down 2.5%. we know we can do better. they said americans deserve a president who will make herself part of the solution. we are just getting some new images into our newsroom of a three-story fire in queens that we want to show you. this happened overnight and there was some real concern here for the folks that live in and around this area. this is some cell phone video from people walking up and down that block. you see a number of fire trucks there and apparatus. smoke billowing out. they were able to get a handle on this for a couple of hours. we understand that nine, ten firefighters had minor injuries as a result of responding to this fire. what caused this fire at this hour? we just don't know. at the live

i'm erika gonzalez. today will be the funeral for one of the baton rouge police officers killed in an ambush on sunday. he was a former marine and his first year on the police force. he lives behind a wife and two children. officials say they expect a large turnout from other law enforcement agencies. the u.s. justice department is looking into a shooting of an unarmed black man in florida. none, in november miami, an officer shot charles kinsey when he was trying to help an autistic man. monday in north miami, an officer shot him, a behavioral therapist, when he was trying to help an autistic man who had wondered from a group home. he was laying on his back with his hands in the air. the officer did not mean to shoot mr. kinsey. >> the movement of the white individu

possible hydraulic fuel leak that sent more than a dozen passengers to a hospital. the american airlines flight was headed from west palm beach to philadelphia yesterday. as it was set to head out, a crew member called in that possible fuel leak. the plane was evacuated of the people on board. a small colorado town says its water supply has been contaminated by marijuana. officials are telling residents of hugo to avoid showering with or drinking that water. the active chemical found in marijuana, thc has been detected in the water supply. officials are trying to figure out how it got there. that town of 730 people doesn't allow the sale or cultivation of marijuana. a fairfax nonprofit has hged its name. our daily bread

by saturday morning, again, you have to remember, heat waves are a cumulative thing, after a really hot day today, we don't cool off as much. heat indexes, 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, already feeling like it's in the mid to upper 80s and by tomorrow afternoon, look at these numbers. 104. the heat index in washington tomorrow afternoon. >> 106 in leesburg, 107 in fredericksburg and it's going to feel nearly like 100 degrees 7:00 or 8:00 tomorrow afternoon. that will be repeated again on sunday and monday. as far as rain chances, there is a slight chance for a shower today. mainly across northern maryland and tomorrow everyone has at least an opportunity for a stray thunderstorm or two, but really if you are counting on much of a cooling thunderstorm chance, it's not going to be much of a -- let's put it this way. you should hope for something else. temperatures up wards near 100 for the next couple of days and cooling all the way back into the mid 90s for next week. i know that brings a frowny face on jack taylor.
