standing by and megan mcgrath is also going to talk about what we can expect with this heat wave. chuck, how is it feeling out there right now? >> it's warmer and more humid than yesterday. if you are going to get out and enjoy the day, the next hour or two will be the best part of it. temperatures in the 60s and low 70s but you'll notice the humidity has started to creep back in. as far as any cooling rain chances, we'll have one or two chances for a stray shower or thunderstorm very late in the day today, but dangerously hot and humid over the week. i took a look back to see how this summer stacks up against our all-time hottest summer, the summer of 2010. by this date, in the summer of 2010, we already had 39 days 90 or higher. so far this year, only 18 days. so we're 21 days behind in the 90-degree day count. total number that year of 67. we're going to have at least 8 or ten in a row starting da

holding up on a friday morning? >> well, it's not off to a great start if you are through the remington area. we've got 29 northbound up near 28, catlet road blocked with accident activity. a couple of trucks involved. plan ahead if you are moving between culpeper and remington this morning. independence avenue, traffic lights malfunctioning. and all travel lanes are available. getting there, nothing wrong on 95, bw parkway, 270. off to a good start so far. we're following the latest on a heat wave hitting our region right now. you can expect to feel the extreme temperatures starting today. temperatures will soar into the 90s and might reach 100 this weekend. news 4 megan mcgrath is live at the palisades fire station with more on how

weather. megan. >> reporter: right now things are pretty comfortable. in fact, i saw someone walking his dog a little while ago and that's a great way to do it. if you got to go out, exercise, walk the dog, now is the time to do it. in a matter of hours we're expecting that extreme heat to kick in. it's going to begin today, go into the weekend and into monday and this is dangerous heat. folks are going to need to take some precautions here. in d.c., fire houses are going to be adding extra ambulances. they are going to have five extra ambulances out there to accommodate what they expect to be a spike in emergency-related calls to the heat. people who find themselves in trouble because of exposure to the heat, and all across the dmv, people are being asked to be -- to take some precautions. for example, limit your outdoor activity. wear light colored, loose clothing. stay hydrated. that's very important. make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids if you are outside. also, check on y

neighbors. they can particularly be vulnerable in extreme heat situations. if you have some elderly neighbors, just give them a call. drop over, make sure they are doing okay. now, experts say it's important to prepare and to use common sense. >> prehydrate. drink plenty of fluids before and during. 1 or 2 liters per hour if you are outside. >> and in the district, spray parks are going to be open longer than normal. they will be open from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. another way for people to cool off. they are also going to be cooling centers across the region for folks who don't have air conditioning, and also in all of this, don't forget your pets. don't leave them outside and certainly don't leave them in a car. that's a very dangerous situation. our plan will put america first. donald trump and his running mate, mike pence. we get a local take on the rnc. here's what they noticed last night. >> it's a new day for republicans now that they officially have their nominee. one of things that jump out to me is during his speech, when the crowd starting chanting lock her up, lock her up about hillary clinton, donald trump didn't take the bait. he said let's defeat her in november. ivanka trump, in a convention where everybody shouted, she lowered her voice. she smiled and she told a positive story about how much she loved her dad. >> we were here -- both of us were at the various local delegations. district of columbia, in it votes overwhelmly democratic, don't count it. in maryland, larry hogan, the republican governor of the state didn't come, several other people didn't come. those republicans are disspirited about that. virginia is the battleground.

and overall, ivanka trump's performance is getting a lot of praise for her introduction to her father last night. one man tweeted this. very impressive. ivanka trump was fantastic. trump gets big points for raising kids like he has says a lot about him. with the rnc over, the focus turns to hillary clinton and the democrats. virginia senator tim kaine is said to be on clinton's short list of potential running mates. some of the other names on that short list, including al gri culture secretary tom vilsack, tom perez, senator elizabeth warren and david culver had a chance to ask senator kaine about that speculation. >> right here in northern virginia a lot of political buzz these days, especially on the democratic side of things. we walk you in right now now to a round table discussion being hosted by virginia senator tim kaine. his name coming up multiple times as a potential vp pick. you are going to notice, though,

in rockville. the car went into a japanese restaurant on randolph last night. no one was hurt. and in news 4 your health, your region will have some money to prepare and attack the zika virus. the centers for disease control is awarding $60 million nationwide. maryland will receive $1.4 million of that money. $250,000 will go to d.c. the money will be available starting in august. six million of that money will go to florida for that zika prevention. it comes as the state is investigating its second possible zika case not related to travel. julia bagg from our sister station in miami is live now with the latest. julia, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. doctors really want to know how these two patients got sick and did it happen from mosquito bites because that would mean that mosquitos in the u.s. are now infected with the zika virus. up to now, all of the
