story. the dangerous heat wave blanketing a lot of the country. the high temperatures that gripped the middle of the country earlier this week are now moving east. some areas could feel temperatures well above 100 this weekend. nbc's morgan radford is covering the story. >> good morning. yesterday was the hottest day of the year, peaking at 94 degrees. this is the first time all the major cities across the country, new york, chicago, l.a., have been under heat advisory at the same time. just to give you some perspective, in those urban areas, all the concrete and the metal, it trapped that heat, making it feel hotter than it is. >> reporter: a deadly heat wave affecting millions of americans this morning as a dangerous cocktail of humidity and high temperatures leaves 26 states under heat advisory. >> too hot. >> sweating like crazy. >> reporter: in new york, the'

also in effect. people are being urged to take public transportation. the heat underground is unbearable. >> it's on fire. >> feels like i'm boiling in a pot of oil. >> reporter: in neighboring new jersey, ac units are flying off the shelves. >> fans, air conditioners. i'm low on air conditioners. >> reporter: cooling centers are popping up all over chicago. >> pool here, computers. it's a great place to come to. >> reporter: much of the heartland is caught under a heat dome. the upper atmosphere creates a lid, trapping hot air inside like a bubble, and then causing it to sink back down to the ground. that's why cities are coming up with creative solutions to keep people cool. like in rochester, minnesota, where you can hop on an air-conditioned bus for free. >> you come in and don't have to pay. >> reporter: down south, the high temperatures crippling this highway in texas. more people have died as a result of

recent years than any other weather event. that's why authorities are remaining vigilant in california, where fast-moving fires have caused mandatory evacuation. temperatures across the state reaching as high as 117 degrees. >> really, really hot. >> we came to escape the heat and cool off at the beach. >> experts say if you are going to be outside this weekend, you should come to a place like this, coney island, where you can get in the water and stay cool. in the meantime, avoid caffeinated drinks, wear light colored clothes and eat light, nutritious food. >> morgan, thank you. dylan dreyer is back with us. it's insuffer rabbable in a lot the country and it's not going to go away. >> it's not like we're breaking record temperatures. the humidity made it so unbearable. here's the area of high pressure. again, when you have high pressure, you have sinking air. it compresses and heats up.

that's why you have nothing moving and we're seeing this last a long period of time. 110 million people are under some sort of excessive heat warning or advisory or excessive heat watch. all because of the humidity. your body can't cool down the way it'd like to. temperatures in the southwest, phoenix, 114 degrees. las vegas, 114. tomorrow is slightly cooler but still about five to ten degrees above average. the midwest, it's going to feel when you factor in the humidity close to 110 degrees. philadelphia will feel like 100 today. on saturday, still looking like it's going to feel about 100 to 110. there is a cold front that'll cool things down throughout the midwest. we're looking for warm temperatures. it'll be more reasonable with lower humidity and temperatures in the 80s in the midwest that will move west by the end of the week. >> thank you, dylan. now, politics. hillary clinton is set to appear in a few

presidential pick tim kaine. kristen welker is following all the developments from tampa. good morning. >> good morning to you. as hilalary clinton and tim kaie get set to hold their first appearance as a joint ticket, kaine, a 58-year-old father of three is someone who checks all the boxes. >> reporter: hillary clinton making it official. her number two is virginia senator tim kaine. clinton campaigned last night, not mentioning her pick. >> are we ready to win an election in november? >> reporter: at 7:30, soon after the event wrapped, clinton called kaine in rhode island and offered him the job. a half hour later, a blast text to her supporters, saying welcome him to our team. kaine tweeted, i'm honored to be her running mate. democrats

would be ready to govern if something happened to her. >> reporter: kaine could struggle to help bernie sanders supporters, saying he's too pro trade and soft on wall street. >> hillary clinton doesn't feel she has to do anything for the progressive wing of the party. >> reporter: republicans pounced. donald trump tweeting, is it the kaine that took hundreds of thousands of dollars in gifts while governor of virginia? a reference to the strutcrutiny got for accepting $160,000 gifts received in office deemed legal. for clinton, the choice was clear. when the two campaigned together last week in virginia, campaign officials say clinton was impressed by his down to earth campaigning style. it's his resume that won clinton over. he is a former governor with foreign policy experience who also speaks spanish, which could help rally critical latino

donald trump is more unpopular than hillary clinton. she wants to keep the election on him. one way is to pick a vice president nomineer interesting. nobody is going to hate tim kaine. no one won't vote for hillary clinton because of tim kaine. >> let's talk about donald trump. the morning after his crowning achievement, gets the nomination, and then holds this somewhat bizarre news conference. event with volunteers. he rambles on and on. he goes after his rivals again. john kasich, ted cruz, talks about setting up a super pac. why does it seem as if he can't let go of the primary? >> it was good for him. donald trump rambling is what his accepting speech for the nomination didn't go on rambling because he had a teleprompter. that still felt he was

normal. at the end of it, went on and was being loud and back to his aggressive leadership style. he said a month ago when asked, are you going to pivot to the general election, he said no. i'm going to be who i am. that is donald trump. it worked for him in the primary. we'll see if it works in the general. basically, any knowledge that worked for previous elections doesn't work for this one. we'll have to see. >> that aggressiveness, we saw it in philly. when we were in cleveland, it was clinton bashing central. do you think we're going to see that vibe in philly, or is it going to be a positive tone? >> i think there will be a lot of negative messaging about donald trump because there is so much material and i think that's what the democrats see as the best ticket in this election. donald trump has negative impressions among the general public. remind people why you don't like trump. democrats can bring themselves to talk about why they like hillary clinton.

absolute chaos erupted on the street behind me. in the air. >> reporter: the shooting captured on camera, reportedly showing the beginning of the rampa rampage. the gunman, dressed in black, pulls out a gun and begins to fire as people run for cover. within minutes, police and ambulances flood nearby streets as terrified shoppers flee from the scene. it began before 6:00 friday night at munich's biggest shopping mall. shots fired at the mcdonald's restaurant, and then inside the mall. a duke university student was there with family and shot this video. >> there was a family approaching us. they were stream icreaming. they were in panic, in shock. >> reporter: nine people killed, sevente teenagers. streets sealed off, transit shut down, highways closed and people warned to stay inside as police and soldiers pursued what

witnesses thought police later confirming there was one gunman filmed on another cell phone video on the mall's car park roof. i'm german, he yells to the person filming, and eventually fires his gun. the suspect's body was found two and a half hours later. police say he was an 18-year-old dperm german iranian. the motives, unclear. those trapped inside the mall were finally bused to safety. heavily armed police raided an apartment in the city. this morning, the shopping mall remains closed azors spzores s e to pay tribute. >> this appears, in the police which i have's words, to be a classic rampage. >> this has become classic.

ron mott thank you. federal authorities are holding three men on charges of conspireing to support isis. the three are from palm beach county, florida. one was arrested as he was set to travel to syria to join isis. the other two are accused of supplying the man with weapons and training. there was a dramatic fire and rescue off the coast of florida. a barge erupted in flames, forcing crew members to abandon ship. the raft was spotted by a good samaritan, helping to bring them to safety. dylan has the rest of the forecast. >> the big story is the heat for everyone except the pacific northwest. we have thunderstorms into the eastern south dakota. we'll see stronger storms throughout the day, especially in the upper midwest.
