stay. we're in the middle of a major heat wave that's not going anywhere. two wounded in a police-involved shooting. what d.c. police are uncovering about a dangerous situation involving an off-duty officer. party politics. tim kaine makes his debut on the national stage as security is tight ahead of the democratic national convention. but first we start with all of this heat. it's going to be another extremely hot day. good morning to you. i'm kristin wright. >> and i'm chris gordon. it is a storm team 4 weather alert day. tom kierein is tracking what we can all expect. >> here we are just past 10:00 in the morning. already 88 degrees in washington and not quite as humid as it was yesterday but still rather humid and as the day progresses we'll continue to climb. we'll be into the 90s here within the next hour or so and hitting mid and upper 90s during the afternoon. here's a live view of the storm team 4 tower

just a few wispy high clouds are coming. temperatures are jumping. low to mid 80s shafle. it will continue to climb. by noontime, low 90s. upper 90s 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., we'll in the 90s and feeling like 100 degrees or higher. by late evening back down to the upper 80s. a look at when this heat wave is finally going to be ending and our storm chances the next ten days. today, we expect all the museums on the national mall to open back up. a power outage shut down the museums on friday. the buildings were just too hot. crews were back out yesterday morning and they were able to get the power running again and a.c. back on. still not clear what exactly caused the outage. the d.c. parks and recs department is helping you keep cool. they are extending the hours at spray parks. 13 parks will stay open two hours later until 9:00 p.m. during the week. the next few days going to be scorchers, but did you know it's actually been a cool 2016?

believe it or not. you can check out more about that in the nbc washington app . search heat records. developing right now two men are wounded in a shooting that somehow involved an off-duty officer. this all unfolded near ingraham street and georgia avenue in northwest d.c. it happened around 8:00 p.m. in this cvs parking lot. we are told, when police learned about the shooting, they found the two men injured but conscious and breathing. an off duty officer witnessed the shooting and intervened. is police tell us that officer fired but they are unsure if the bullets actually hit anyone. the victims made their own way to the hospital. no word yet if there will be any charges in connection to the shooting. in the race for the white house, one day after making his debut with hillary clinton as her running mate, virginia senator tim kaine will be back in richmond attending church this morning. tim kaine brought the crowd in miami to its feet saturday as he tries to

to a national audience. david culver was at the rally and has more on how tim kaine was received. >> reporter: the signs hanging above, and the ones held in the hands of supporters, showing hillary clinton and tim kaine. together on stage here in miami. >> i can't think of anybody better to have by my side on the campaign trail in the white house. >> she pointed to his years as richmond mayor, his time as virginia governor. and his current role as a u.s. senator, but is it enough to win over bernie sanders supporters. she thinks so. >> when i say he's a progressive who likes to get things done, i mean it. >> the crowd got to hear from him knowing well the south florida audience he spoke at first in spanish. >> the scene last night in richmond after tim kaine got back from his campaign rally in miami, hundreds of people gathered outside of his home where he's lived over 30 years. tim kaine and his wife spoke to the crowd and shared with them how the day went as he was formally introduced as the democratic parties vice-presidential nominee. just over an hour from now, virginia dmts will be heading to the democratic national convention, this week they will formally nominate hillary clinton and tim kaine for the democratic ticket. >> reporter: you can see this bus is loaded up and idling and almost ready to go to head to the democratic national convention in philadelphia. with former virginia governor tim kaine named as the vice-presidential nominee, the ticket is solid, but the groundwork has been played largely

campaigns. on the head of this convention, we have leaks of emails among democratic party operatives that detail some smear strategies that could be left field against bernie sanders. a lot of sanders supporters on that bus and we talk to one that's bound for philly about how she felt about that. >> the issue, it angers me. the party of inclusion and diversity looking to expose a person for their religious beliefs or lack of them is disgusting. >> reporter: but, you know, she also said that this sort of thing happens in political campaigns and if everyone's email were exposed, they would probably want to go hide somewhere. so this is what the baggage is going into this. they also talk about unity and this being one of the

progressive tickets ever. with tim kaine being there, no one can think of a reason not to like them. they see that as nothing as a plus on this democratic ticket. we're live in fairfax county, derrick ward back to you. the democratic convention kicks off tomorrow in philly. like the republican convention in cleveland, security will be tight. nbc's gabe gutierrez has a look at the measures being put into place. >> reporter: in the city of brotherly love, the stakes are high. >> the declaration of independence was signed, a lot of history in this town, we want to make sure we maintain that history and keep it safe. >> reporter: with 400 miles of coastline to patrol, including one of the nation's busiest ports, the coast guard in philadelphia is bracing for the democratic national convention, bringing in reenforcement, 21 vessels will monitor secure areas near the wells fargo arena. we got a firsthand look. >> we got to prepare any type of scenario that might affect an event such as this.

>> reporter: recent terror attacks around the world and police shootings in the u.s. have authorities here on alert. today, barricades went up around the arena and there's already a heavy police presence downtown near the convention center. more than 10,000 demonstrators are expected in a city trying to avoid a repeat of the republican national convention 16 years ago when hundreds of protesters were arrested through clashes with police. >> i think there are a lot of people upset with bernie sanders for endorsing hillary. among those is drew who is a former bernie sanders campaign volunteer who is now part of a group organizing protests during the convention. >> i think it's different than any other before, because we're at a unique political moment. >> a moment he and the city hope will be peaceful. some differences between this past week's republican convention and the democratic one, philadelphia's police force is four times larger than cleveland and it

someone may have been killed by those raging wild fires out in california. a burned body was found outside of a home near los angeles where a fire doubled in size yesterday. investigators are trying to figure out if the person died from the fire or something else. a bus accident injures 17 people in anne arundel county. it happened near the bwi marshall airport at dorsey road and shipley road just after 8:30 last night. when it was hit, the bus ran off the roadway, went through a guardrail, and into the woods. while most of the people suffered minor injuries, two people, a 17 and 20-year-old were taken to the shock trauma center. turn up the a.c. or hit the pool, tom is tracking some of the hottest temperatures we've seen all year. including a big impact for tomorrow's commute. maryland's race for governor could be shaping up. the candidate being urged to run against larry hog in 2018.an

drones in their lesson plans. the goal is to get kids excited about stem fields. we got a deeper look at the foxcroft school in loudon county. >> good, good. keep going. >> teachers take flight. >> higher, higher. >> there's a tremendous amount of good that can be done with drones. i think it's important for the world to see that. >> educators flying drones. all girls foxcroft school in middleburg, virginia, hosted the da vinci challenge to build. workshop, to put unmanned aircraft in the hands of teachers from the d.c. area and around the country. they take what they learn back to their students to get them excited about science, technology, engineering, and math. and the world of possibilities. >> and our new project is to use unmanned systems for locating and detecting sea turtle tracks. >> the teachers actually built these drones. >> foxcroft stem department chair, dr. maria evans believes

announced a nearly $1 million award to develop courses on unmanned aircraft at some colleges in the commonwealth. well, former maryland attorney general doug gasler says he's being urge to run against governor larry hogan in 2018. he says that democrats want the most viable candidate to beat hogan. he says he is not organizing any campaign right now. he lost to then lieutenant governor anthony brown in the 2014 democratic primary and of course, brown, went on to lose to hogan in the general election. so turning now to decision 26. tim kaine issic maing his positions clear as hillary clinton's v.p. pick. >> his introduction was part autobiography and part attack on donald trump. moderator meet the press is

in philadelphia this morning. was it effective and what can we expect from a hillary clinton-tim kaine ticket? >> i think they have done as good as a roll out as they could have, compared to clinton and al gore back in 1992. in comparison how the trump campaign rolled out mike pence is night and day and by doing it in miami, they were able to emphasize something in his background that they wanted to figure out how to show this as an asset early, that's his ability to speak spanish. they go to a bilingual city. it's clear why she picked him. she was looking for a governing partner at she thought wouldn't make mistakes on the campaign trail. who was in tune with the issues both domestically

internationally. didn't need a lot of preparation to be ready to go toe-to-toe and that's what they got in tim kaine. at the end of the day, this isn't going to be decided by running mates. it's decided by the top of the ticket. we always get excited about the running mates but the next time they become the main news story is when they debate in two months. >> let's talk about the top of the ticket. donald trump, did he get a bounce or a bump from the rnc last week? >> early indications are that he did and he always had a good opportunity to get a bounce because he was entering the convention with more undecided republicans about his candidacy than previous republican nominees so he had some sort of low-hanging fruit if he did his speech right which is just to win over republicans. while i thought the convention was a mess the first couple of days and wednesday seemed totally chaotic, it's clear that the cruz helping trump rally the delegates to his

we have temperatures soaring again in the upper 90s. we have a weather alert day under way. it's going to continue on monday and tuesday. there is the capital wheel in the hot sun in prince george's county, right along the potomac river. the heat is building. it's going to be building at nats park as well, they are taking on the pad trays. when you are arriving at the park, it will be already be in the mid 90s. during the game, the temperature will be in the upper 90s. it will feel like 100 or so with the searing sunshine. take the sunblocks, take breaks. heat index of 91 in washington. that's the feels like temperature. heat index is already low to mid 90s across virginia. fredericksburg feels like 94 already here. we're not at 10:30 in the morning. love this, sun rise a

it's 10 vemt. 26 and here are four things to know. two men are involved in a shooting that somehow involved an off duty d.c. police officer in northwest last night. the police officer witnessed a shooting and intervened but police say they don't know if the officer shot anyone. it's under investigation. hours before the democratic national convention gets under way in philadelphia, security is tight. more than 10,000 demonstrators are expected. the washington monument is closed until at least tuesday. the national park service says a faulty bearing caused problems
