dropped against two maryland students and why a umd police officer was disciplined. shomari stone has more. >> reporter: take a look at this body camera video from a university of maryland police officer on may 21st. he and his partner respond to a party at the court-yards apartments. they walk upstairs, bang on the door. a girl opens up and says hi. >> hello. >> what's going on? >> hi. >> what's going on in there? >> we have a graduation celebration. >> okay. can i see the i.d. of somebody who lives there? >> i don't have my i.d. on me. >> we heard people are fighting inside. >> there's no one fighting. who told you that? >> you need to open the door. >> we heard people are fighting, they have a baseball bat. >> what? >> and that's when things start to escalate. police order people to leave the party. the video shows some complying, others don't. some let the officers know they live there. >> right now we're clearing this area. >> moments later an officer uses pepper spray, shouting "spray" only after h

people scream. >> spray! spray! >> reporter: medics show up and a police officer arrests a student in the parking lot. >> you're under arrest. >> reporter: also in the parking lot police tell people to back up. one woman says she's making sure her sister is okay. seconds later the chief says the same officer deploys pepper spray again, this time in the area where medics are already treating people. [ screaming ] university of maryland police chief david mitchell told us that the video shows unacceptable behavior by his officers. he suspended one without pay for two weeks and says that officer won't go back on the street until further notice. >> the bottom line is it never should have gotten to this point. >> shomari stone reporting. tyson's corner center had to clean up a big mess after a fire inside the mall. several restaurants and stores were closed. the flames started inside the seasons 52 restaurant, forcing hundreds of people to evacuate. news 4's

story. >> reporter: it was just after 6:00 when patrons in the movie theater in the new three-story wing at tyson's corner center realized something was wrong. >> it was just starting the previews, and as the previews were playing the show actually started to fill one smoke and all the lights started to actually start flashing and the emergency lights -- alarms started going off. >> eric hern, the chef at tuscan grill, says things happened fast. >> right in the middle of happy hour. so i know everybody had to stop drinking their martinis. so we had to -- everybody out right now. like drop your things. i had to make sure everything was off on the line. >> reporter: officials say the fire began in the seasons 52 restaurant and spread through exhaust vents to the roof, where it could be seen from the beltway. the fire went to three alarms, bringing in additional equipment and manpower including some from neighboring jurisdictions. the evacuation included the entire new wing of the mall,

restaurants as well as the movie theaters. >> we train to do these kind of things. so like i said, with the help of the police department as well. so they did it pretty well. right now we don't have any -- we have no injuries. >> reporter: jackie bensen, news 4. it's political convention season and it would be un-american if entrepreneurs didn't try to make a few bucks off all this hoopla. one businessman from d.c. made the trek to cleveland and found it the perfect launching pad for his new books. news 4's chris lawrence caught up with him on the street. >> we got trump bobbleheads. get your trump shirts and trump bobbleheads. >> we got shirts, bobbleheads, and now thanks to a local entrepreneur we have the books. go trump, go hillary. all thanks to rob kulik. you drove these books all the way up from d.c. last night? >> yes. six hours. a little bit of rain. >> what's the idea behind them? they look like kids' books, but they're obviously aimed at adults. >> yeah. my partners and i, we just thought it would be

we have a series of college rivalry books, and we thought what's a bigger rivalry right now than trump and hillary. >> so they're written in a sense of fun, humor, poking fun at the election? >> yeah. totally. you know, we're not trying to steal -- or steer the election one way or another. you know, we consider ourselves equal opportunity lampooners here. the trump book makes fun of hillary, and the hillary book makes fun of trump. >> can you read us a little from the go trump book? >> sure. from transportation innovators and companies from all across america to come up with the best ideas. so it's not what i want to see. it's what the best ideas are. we'll figure that out when we get the proposal. >> in addition, the state plans to commit about $130 million to build a new interchange for i-270 at watkins mill road. construction should start next summer. the pokemon go craze is in full swing around d.c.'s most famous landmarks. national park rangers recently led a catch the mall pokemon hunt. your phone alerts you when you are near a poke monster. then you try to catch it by throwing a ball with your phone. the goal was to help people who love the pokemon game fall in love with d.c. landmarks as well. >> here in the open out in constitution gardens on the grounds of the washington monument those are fabulous places to come out, catch your favorite pokemon, find your park as well as your pokemon, and have a fabulous time in your national parks. >> before you head out on/pokemon

but you know, he'll be with us in spirit. that's for sure. >> god bless y'all, man. >> reporter: with his signature headdress and tomahawk, chief zee was not only the redskins' ultimate fan, he had his own dedicated following. he enjoyed celebrity status wherever he went. >> i've never seen faces from infants on up light up as much as when chief walked in a room. >> the chief loves you. you have a good thanksgiving, you hear? >> reporter: the chief, whose real name was zema williams, died in his sleep at his prince george's county home. the retired car salesman's devotion to the redskins spanned four decades. the fans say chief zee's presence will definitely be missed during the upcoming football season. but some also see it as a rallying point for the fans and the team. the chief was someone who would liven up the crowds in the stadium and at tailgating parties. he embraced the team's youngest fans. every child could c

his 2-year-old neighbor in the pool just 20 minutes after she disappeared from her home. virginia beach police did not press charges, but dillard said off camera he was devastated by the toddler's death and decided to rip out the pool after police found a hole in his fence just big enough for a child to crawl through. more than 280 kids under the age of 5 drown every year in pools, according to the u.s. consumer products safety commission. the news 4 i-team found more than 50 of those deaths happened in maryland, d.c., and virginia within the last ten years. the cpse says most children die when an adult loses track of the child when they're at the pool together. but one out of every ten pool drownings happens after a child figures out how to get through the pool fence. kids are natural-born explorers. they see these colorful floats, you know, tubes and noodles. >> the university of maryland's dr. rich

pediatric emergency doctor studying maryland cases including 30 near drownings that have happened in the last three years. he says while some involve teenagers who can't swim most are toddlers between 1 and 4 years old. >> they don't quite understand the risk of water in their mouth or water causing them to choke, and then it's just a second and then all of a sudden, you know, they can go. they can lose their lives. >> reporter: he says drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children under the age of 4. so it's critical for all adults, even those who do not have kids, to secure their pool. michael schlattery is a pool inspector for prince george's county health department, which inspects more than 300 pools each summer. he spends most of his inspection walking the perimeter of the pool's fence, checking to make sure gates are locked and pulling hard to see if the fence will come loose. >> mak singe it's secured at the top. also making sure it's secured at

>> reporter: pool inspectors say it's really simple to tell whether or not your fence meets code. in the state of maryland it has to be more than six feet tall. i'm 5'11", this is taller than me. this fence meets that rule. they also want you to use your fist. this is about four inches, or the size of a child's head. so make sure your fist can't get through any holes, especially down here at the bottom where a child might try to squeeze through. 87% of all child drownings happen in residential pools, according to the cpsc, which is why no matter where you live all of the local governments in our area require pool owners to install self-latching gates and a tall fence. the i-team searched through hundreds of inspection reports and found multiple apartment complexes in prince george's county cited for holes in their fences and broken gates before the season summer started. in montgomery county inspectors visited multiple homes after neighbors complained about holes in their fences. in both

found all of the fences were repaired or replaced after the inspectors visited. but that's not the case in fairfax county. even though virginia law gives counties the power to go after people who don't maintain their pool fences, including jail time and fines, the county told us it doesn't enforce the law, meaning it does not maintain any records of complaints or violations. records from the state's medical examiner and local police show at least eight children have died in fairfax county pools within the last ten years. dr. shireen adabaki at children's national medical center says it is critical for parents to keep an eye on their kids and should never assume a fence or a gate will keep a kid out. her staff saw 21 year drownings in their emergency room alone last year. >> a lot of people put pool covers on the pool. we have seen a few again cases of toddlers suffocating, you know, near drowning in the small amou

pool cover. >> reporter: all of the experts we talked to say try to think like a toddler. looking for where they could squeeze through. and tackle the problem now. so you never have to come home to something like this. tisha thompson, news 4 i-team. >> everyone agrees, you should teach a child to swim starting as early as 2 years old. but even teenagers who are able to swim can drown. so tisha and the i-team put together a list of what parents can do to protect their children at the pool. and since the laws vary from county to county, you can also find a list of what pool owners must do to stay safe this summer on our nbc washington app. a vietnam war veteran receives the nation's highest military honor. find out the unbelievably courageous mission he carried out to save dozens of american lives.

making a splash ahead of the games. ledecky was a newcomer during the london games. she was just 15 when she took home her first gold medal. and now the 19-year-old swimming star is proving to be a leader for team usa. >> it's been a lot of fun with the team. we're all getting along really well, coming together as a team, and having a lot of fun, still training hard and getting ready for rio. >> ledecky has earned spots on the olympic team in the 200 and 400 freestyle and dominated the trials in the 800 freestyle. this past week a vietnam war veteran was awarded the nation's highest military honor, the medal of honor. retired army lieutenant colonel charles kettles is credited with saving the lives of 44 soldiers during an ambush in 1967. he flew his helicopter in and out of a heated battle three times. after the last trip he learned eight soldiers had been left behind. kettles then returned to the battlefield without artillery
