shootings and the reasons behind it. angie goff is at the live desk with new information. what's going on? >> we've learned that the far fax county sheriffs deputy who was on assignment at the hospital. shot and struck that individual after being threatened. as you take a look at the scene here, that, of course, according to preliminary reports that we're getting, after darcy spencer broke the news. the man shot is now inside the hospital recovering and is expected to be okay. this all started, they say, when someone reported a suspicious man last night with some sort of edged weapon seen at a bus stop near inova. the deputy involved is on routine administrative leave and an internal investigation is under way. mow leet green on the scene gathering more information. a live report coming up. also developing right now, we're working to learn what kind of impact a giant under ground fire is going to have today. d.c. fire and ems

ground. a lot of work crews out here. all kinds of trucks trying to figure out exactly what's going on. i was told by one of those contractors at 4:30 this morning, there was a big boom. they don't know what that was at this point. i want to show you some video from overnight. this has been going on all night long. this is video tweeted out by d.c. fire and ems and you can see all of the flames that were shooting out of the ground from this transformer fire overnight. big flames, red, glowing, shooting out from the ground and a lot of smoke. you can see why this is such a huge problem. we expect this to continue throughout the day today. back here live, again, pepco contractors here. police out here. making sure that this doesn't become a huge safety issue as well. pepco, we're still checking with them to find out exactly how many outages we're talking about. we understand that pepco may be working on this until well into the afternoon.

northwest washington. thank you. recovery crews will begin a sixth day at the scene of that deadly apartment explosion in montgomery county. senator ben cardin of maryland and montgomery county executive ike leggit will visit the site today. a sixth body was found in the rubble yesterday. an eighth person who had been missing has been found afe. washington gas officials may return to that site. they are visiting nearby buildings to test the gas lines. developing this morning, a crash involving a fire truck sent five people to the hospital. it happened along monroe and holm mead last night. the truck was responding to a call when it collided with a car. the lights and sirens were on when the crash happened. two people who had to be pride out of the car aren

condition. three others are listed in serious condition. four firefighters were evaluated as a precaution but they are expected to be. nuances -- new answers could come today in a decades old murder case. our news partners at wtop report that patricia jean welsh plans to enter a plea for perjury for the lyons sisters murders. they disappeared from the mall. 40 years ago. prosecutors believe that lloyd welsh kidnapped the girls, killed them and buried their burned remains in bedford county, virginia. his trial is pushed to next year. patricia jean welsh is his cousin. she told investigators that other family members lied to family members to cover up the crimes. >> two incidents are racing security concerns at cia headquarters in langley, virginia. thomas luu is expected to plead guilty today. he crashed his car in june to get the cia's attention.

broken down car blocking one lane here this morning. en l street shut down at 18th northwest because of that fire department investigation. new details overnight from a developing story. a shooting involving a sheriffs deputy outside inova fairfax hospital. molette green is live there with an update. the suspect had some sort of weapon we hear. >> reporter: aaron, good morning. yeah, it happened at a bus stop near the green garage right here on the hospital campus. now hospital security called fairfax county police to report a suspicious man holding what police only described as an edged weapon. they would not go into more detail about the weapon here. a sheriffs deputy already on duty here and in uniform came to the scene, got here before the other officers, and here's what police say happened next. >> county sheriffs office deputy was working at the hospital already and

responded, located this suspect, and some sort of confrontation took place, and the deputy wound up shooting the suspect. >> reporter: now, right now, it is unclear how many times this 18-year sheriffs deputy fired his weapon and how many times this adult male was actually hit. no one else was injured in this. no word yet on possible charges. police say there is no known threat to the public here at the hospital. back to you. why would anybody do this? that's the big question this morning as a wildfire in northern california rages on. investigators say that they now know the person behind this. the clayton fire that's destroyed nearly 200 homes and buildings and more than 4,000 acres of land. it is only 5% contain right now. damian pashlik is in custod
