you. the important message to get out from fairfax police is that this situation is under control. there is no threat to public safety here. shots fired late last night, right on hospital property is neushul. all of it taking place on the property but outside at a bus stop near the green garage here. a suspicious man was holding what police will only describe as an edged weapon. at this time a sheriffs deputy was on duty and in uniform and came to the scene, got here before the police did, and police say some sort of confrontation took place which led to the deputy shooting the man. >> three fairfax county officers responded immediately, and rendered aid to the suspect. until rescue arrived,

fortunately obviously they were literally right across the parking lot. rescue took the suspect into the hospital. he was treated and at least preliminary information is that he is expected to survive. >> reporter: so at this point we expect the man to survive his injuries. it is unclear exactly how many times this 18-year sheriffs deputy fired his weapon and how many times the man was shot. he is expected to survive. again, no one else injured in this confrontation. no word yet on possible charges here. that is the latest live from outside the hospital. i'm molette green. back to you. >> molette, thank you. a massive transformer fire has cut power to businesses in northwest washington this morning and the smoke is still going. take a look at the scene here. all the smoke and flames. d.c. fire and ems says the transformer blew near 18th street and l street northwest. firefighters had to wait at least an hour for pepco to come and cut power. kristin wright is following developments and we'll get an update from her

five people are in the hospital after a crash involving a fire truck in columbia heights. d.c. fire rescue says that truck was responding to a call when it complied wd a car. the lights and sirens were on when it happened. two people who had to be pried out of the car are in critical condition. three others are listed in serious condition. firefighters were evaluated as a precaution but are expected to be okay. maryland senator ben cardin and montgomery county ike legget will visit the scene of that deadly apartment building explosion. one person is still unaccounted for. a sixth body was found in the rubble yesterday. a man originally reported missing has been found safe. some residents reported smelling natural gas before last week's explosion and fire. d.c. police say they are investigating a series of videos going ra

an officer pinning a young woman up against a patrol car. they were posted on twitter yesterday afternoon. in them, you see the woman's feet dangling along the ground as she's held against the car. police have contacted the officer's commander but have not released any more information. happening today, the fairfax county city council will hold a special meeting to hold a special election for a new mayor. former mayor scott silverthorne was arrested last week. council members are expected to approve a date for the special election overnight. six arrests have been made overnight in milwaukee as protests calm down. it's a much different scene now. rioters set fire to buildings and cars to protest a police shooting death. 10:00 p.m. curfew for teenagers is set

it is a storm team 4 weather alert day. check out the roads in roanoke, virginia, when storms rolled in yesterday afternoon. several inches of rain fell in just an hour. a lot of rain, chuck, for parts of our area too, right? >> you bet. i used to work down at the roanoke at the nbc station down there. i know what it looks like to have flooding in that part of virginia and around here, fortunately not much flooding last night. we still did have quite a few trees down and a lot of people without electricity today. if you know someone without power, you may want to invite them over to your place to sit in the a.c. it's going to be another blistering hot day to be outside. your morning run is plenty humid. don't forget your spf and in

severe flooding across louisiana has led to 7 deaths. more than 20,000 people have been rescued from flood waters. hundreds of homes have either been damage or destroyed. more than 12,000 people affected by the flooding are now in shelters. >> until it happens to you, you just really don't understand. water is probably one of the worst mother nature beasts there is. >> president obama has declared a major disaster and authorized federal aid. metro says it is taking action to stop train drivers from speeding through red lights. the federal transit administration says between january 2012 and july of this year, metro train operators ran stop signals 68 times. the fta report blames factors like inattention, confusion, and unfamiliarity. and poor communication between the train operation and control center.

metro respond we will continue to work cooperate with fta on corrective actions and meet deadlines outline in the report. trains have been running at 35 miles per hour because of high track temperatures. systemwide delays could be possible. yesterday the heat led to vre delaying on the fredericksburg line. developing kmorng this morning, the man accused of killing two men outside of a mosque is expected in court. oscar morelle was charged late last night in the murder of a new york city imam and another man. he hit a bicyclist with his suv minutes later. both crimes were caught on surveillance. charge were filed after gun and clothes matching the description were found in his home. a 15-year-old is facing charges for a shooting in downtown washington. that teenager shot someone inside the mcdonald's at the verizon center last week. they arrested him yesterday and did not release his name because he's a minor. he has been charged wh

a multimillion dollar mansion that neighbors say is a party house is now being connected to a shooting in virginia. it's on chain bridge road just inside the arlington county line. police in the county say officers were called to the address twice between 5:00 and 6:30 sunday morning for reports of fighting. that was not the case, though, when they arrived. police believe a dispute that started there led to a driveby shooting in mclean sunday morning. >> altercation led to four people leaving in one car and at some point near the intersection of dolley madison and kirby they stopped. a second car pulled up to the first car. a number of shots rang out. one of the victims in that vehicle called 911. our officers responding. those victims drove themselves

an american tourist is among four people killed during an earthquake in peru. the 65-year-old man died sun night when part of the ceiling in his hotel room collapsed on him. 30 other people injured in that 5.3 magnitude quake had to be airlifted to hospital. many major highways in the southern region of that country remain closed because of damage. that huge wildfire in northern california is getting bigger. the clayton fire in lake county is now 4,000 acres wide and still only 5% contained. is it caused an estimated $10 million in damage. a lot of people have been evacuated from their homes as a result. officials believe it was intentionally set. they arrested a man

people still in the dark. over in virginia, things improving dramatically over the last 1 1/2 hours. only about 988 outages. most of those by the way in fairfax coin. d.c. and montgomery county residents, you are looking at about 800. that's according to pepco. we're still seeing a handful of people still without power in charles and saint mary's counties. we'll continue to follow up. angie goff. first 4 traffic, as far as the commute, 95 northbound at 32, brand-new accident that has really starting to slow things very quickly. already a one-mile backup that's growing here. it sounds like it's off to the right side of the roadway. taking a look at 395 inbound, still very slow there from the earlier crash at glebe road. fairfax parkway, a crash blocking the express plains as well. the beltway looks pretty darn

5 north at coven tri that left side is block by a crash. a huge underground transform er fire has knocked out power. the smoke hasn't stopped yet. the dangerous situation for firefighters and utility crews at 18th and l street. kristin wright is live now where the smoke is still smoerledering. how is it looking now? >> pretty much the same all morning. still smoking. just talked to two guys who work in an office building here at l street who told me they have no power. that is going to be the situation we believe for most of the day in this area. now, take a look here behind me. these are pepco crews. they just pulled that manhole cover off the ground here on 18th and it looks like one of them actually has gone down under ground. so this is a big job. if you look over here, you can see where it is still smoking. that is where the

this has been going on all night long. if you can look closely, you can see the smoke still rising. i want to show you some video overnight. this is tweeted by d.c. fire and ems. look at those flames. we saw big flames coming out of that transformer under ground, red, glowing, and then lots of smoke that followed after. like i said, this has been a situation all night long. one of the pepco crews told me as we arrived this is still very much a problem. as far as outages, we can tell you according to pepco, about 100 customers in this area without power. when we say 100 customers, that doesn't mean 100 individual people. we're talking, of course, lots of office buildings here. businesses. there's a restaurant. there's a hotel. there's nordstrom rack here. there's an office building. law firms down the street. so questionable as to whether those people are going to be able to work today. pepco telling us that this could go w

today. could lead to another chance for thunderstorms this afternoon. probably not as much coverage or severity as yesterday. timing that out, you saw that flil flare up of thunderstorms most likely between 3:00 and 7:00 this afternoon into this evening. earlier than yesterday's rain chances, as a result probably not as widespread or as strong. the real issue we're dealing with today is another heat advisory. heat indexes 105 to maybe as 109 or 10. limit your time outside. stay hydrated and be sure to check on your neighbors. right now we're in the low to mid 70s across most of the area. afternoon temperatures way up into the 90s once again. suburbs, mid to upper 90s. upper 90s, flirting with 100 in the washington area and for tomorrow, not quite as bad because of more rain chances tomorrow. today's rain chance only 30%. tomorrow's chance up to 50%. we'll take it. rain ends early on thursday. thursday afternoon, friday, saturday it will be dry with temperatures near 90. another rain chance sun into monday.

that leads to yesterday -- yes indeed, melissa 80s for next week. breaking news here in first four traffic. marked delays. brunswick, east 890, we're one hour behind. on top of it, of course, you can take red line. pack that patience for sure. quite a bit delay headed northbound, about 2 1/2 mile backup. 121 at lewis dale road, all lanes blocked there. inbound, 395, you can see still a little bit slow but that's a lot better than earlier this morning. 66 has recovered pretty nicely as well. 95 north in virginia, fairfax county parkway, starting to see some real delays because of that crash that's blocking the ramp to the express lanes. no problems here really in prince george's county. 270

typical. guys. i'm kristin wright in northwest d.c. at 18th and l where a transformer fire has been going on all night and it is still smoking. take a look here behind me, right in front of this office building. you can see it is still smoking pretty good. we understand that the fire itself is out, but it is still smoldering. d.c. fire and ems tweeted this video overnight. it shows big flames from when the fire was really going, red glowing flames shooting up into the sky. we understand that it took some time because firefighters had to wait for pepco to come out before they could actually really attack the fire. there are over 100 customer outages in this area. we've heard from several people who say their entire office building is out of power right now and pepco is saying it could be until 4:00 before power is restored. we'll update you on the nbc

look at the scene there. the transformer blew near 18th street and l street in northwest washington. a man is expected to survive after he was shot by a deputy outside inova fairfax hospital in falls church. the man had some sort of a weapon and acting suspiciously. the deputy is now on administrative leave, which is standard. we're under a heat advisory again for today. this includes southern montgomery county, the loudon county, all of fairfax, prince george's, southern maryland all of the i-ate corridor under the heat index. only a slighter chance than yesterday's severe weather chance, but still a chance for stronger storms today. cooler weather is about a week away. pack that patience today on marc this morning. brunswick, 95 northbound at 35,
