that crash. otherwise, bellway looking good. a look at metro and travel times coming up. more on that breaking news melissa just mentioned near dupont circle this morning. one man is dead after a hit-and-run accident. molette green is live on the latest with the investigation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. a man lost his life here early this morning and d.c. police want to find the hit-and-run driver. take a look at the scene. very much active as investigators pick up every clue they can get. you can see much of this area blocked off around new hampshire avenue, along m street at 21st street. cars coming up m street are forced to make a left turn on to 21st. not exactly sure where this happened, but you can see where investigators are focusing their attention right now. we know the man hit was on foot. unclear exactly where it happened, aga

unfolded in the 3:00 a.m. hour. the man was pronounced dead after an ambulance took him away. we don't know a whole lot at this moment about the striking vehicle. that's why d.c. police are on the scene. all we can tell you at this point is that the car was dark in color and police would love to be able to hear from anyone who was here at that time and witnessed something that could help them put together what happened here in the rl morning hours. that is the latest live here from this very active scene. back to you. now to a developing story. a police-involved shooting is under investigation in prince george's county. it happened on shady glen terrace in capitol heights just before 10:00 last night. officers were trying to stop a suspect in a series of violent crimes. the suspect first drove off and jumped out of the car with a gun, that does according to police. the officer chased and confronted the suspect. the officer shot what police say was about three times and hit the suspect ihe

scene. the officer involved is now on standard leave for the investigation. this morning, the search is on for the gunman who opened fire at a basketball court near the hamilton recommend center in northwest washington. a man told police he saw two people opening his backpack while he was playing on the court around 7:00 last night. when he questioned them, he says one pulled a gun and took off with the bag and what witnesses say was some sort of motorized bike. no one was hurt. vandals, not victims. brazilian police say ryan lochte and three other u.s. swimmers lied about being robbed at gunpoint. about an hour ago, u.s. swimmer jimmy feegin got his passport back. gunnar bentz and jack conger are on their way home. this is surveillance video from the gas station where the swimmers had said the robbery happened sunday night. investigators say one or al

swimmers vandalized the gas station bathroom which sparked a confrontation with an armed security guard. the u.s. olympic committee has issued an apology to rio and said the swimmers will be dealt with. this incident has caused a lot of problems for brazil. rio deserved an apology for having their reputation dragged in the mud. >> reporter: the americans are gone now but what hasn't left is the hostility. i have been covering this area and coming to brazil for more than ten years now and i have never quite seen a scene like this one. the u.s. olympic committee says all of its swimmers would cooperate with police. >> we posted that in the nbc washington app, including the executive director's reaction. all right. let's turn now to the competition. this is a live look at the olympic cauldron

sex charges. court documents say scott casoni tried to lure a 10-year-old for sex. he's pleaded not guilty. an advisory group in alexandria recommends changing the name of jefferson davis highway. the city council tasked that group with looking at confederate memorials and street names. it's not calling for an all-out blanket change to all streets honoring confederate figures. rather considering individual requests for new names as they are brought up. the group is also recommending that the apamattod statue remain in place. outrage at prince george's county schools. head start program was kept a secret from board members. they just found out that the program is set to lose its $6 million grant because of this investigation. there are two incidents in the reports. one where a three-year-old was forced to mop up his own urine after an

people want to know what really caused that deadly apartment explosion in silver spring. >> in a few hours, we may get some answers. it has been over a week now since the blast and several agencies, including the ntsb have taken part in the intensive investigation. kristin wright is live at the flower branch apartments now with more on what we'll learn this morning. >> reporter: good morning. standing here, looking at that absolutely breaks your heart. nine days after this explosion, still too many questions, but sources close to the investigation tell news 4 that natural gas was a factor. seven people lost their lives in this explosion. two of them only ages 3 and 8. we know who the victims are, but we expect that they will be officially identified today. people here at the flower branch apartments say they had complained about a smell of gas.
