"news 4 at 5:00" starts now. good evening. it's still not clear exactly what happened in that gas station down in rio but two more team usa swimmers are back in the states tonight, including montgomery county native jack conger. >> his teammate ryan lochte whose comments set the drama in motion has apologized for his behavior and the fallout it caused. he said he issued a public apology once he knew his teammates would be able to leave brazil safely. their fellow swimmer james feigen is still in rio and has apparently worked out a monetary deal with officials there to get his passport and to be able to return home. >> the fourth team member, gunnar bentz, flew home last night with conger. news 4's david culver is live outside conger's home in rockville and spoke briefly with his dad. >> jim and doreen, we can tell you that jackko

yet returned here to his rockville home and behind me you can see there are signs hanging on his parent's house and signs of support. there's a few homes in this neighborhood that carry similar signs. a short time ago his parents pulled up to the house. jack was not with them but his dad did answer the door for us. >> i can't comment on anything at this time. >> dave conger cordial as retook questions regarding his son. this is video of the 20-year-old returning this morning to miami international airport. a day earlier officials in rio pulled him and teammate gunnar bentz off a u.s.-bound flight. they were brought in for questioning. not as suspects but as witnesses. they were among the four u.s. swimmers who brazilian police say vandalized a gas station bathroom while drunk. the surveillance video shows them walking towards the back of the gas station nearby the bathrooms. a minute later the four emerge along with a station employee. they were told to pay for the

that had they had been held up at gunpoint and robbed. >> and then the guy pulled out his gun. he cocked it. put it to my forehead. >> reporter: he later backed away from that claim. in a statement to brazilian investigators conger told them he saw on the news the statement ryan made and realized ryan was lying about what had happened. conger did not make any statement about what had happened. today lochte apologized in this instagram post reading in part this was a situation that could and should have been avoided. i accept responsibility for my role in this happening and have learned some valuable lessons. the one question conger's father did answer, when i asked how he felt knowing his son was back on u.s. soil. >> i'm glad he's back, yeah, absolutely. >> reporter: we did mention that fourth swimmer jimmy feigen being allowed to return to the u.s. after being ordered to pay nearly an $11,000 donation. coming up at 6:00 i'll walk you through what's next for the swimmers. jim? >> all right.

back in rio another day of competition after team usa hit triple digits in the overall medal count. >> we've added a couple more today, but it's been a little rough out there today. hour men's volleyball team will have to go for bronze after falling earlier today to italy. and american wrestler jordan burroughs lost his quest for gold. the london games champion fell in the quarterfinals of men's freestyle wrestling in just his third international loss. one bright spot, women's water polo team earned a repeat gold, crushing italy by a score of 12-5. >> lots still to come in primetime, the world's fastest man will try and go for his third threepeat of the summer games. usain bolt will anchor jaume can a in the 4 x 100 relay against justin gaitlin and team usa. we're also going to see the american women in the same women after they got an unprecedented do-over in the semis and pull

off the fastest time yet. and trying for repeat gold in the pole vault and it's men's platform diving qualifying. >> three of the seven people killed in the silver spring apartment explosion have been identified and we now have confirmation that natural gas caused the explosion and then fueled the fire. news 4's chris gordon is live outside the flower branch apartments where the investigation is far from over. chris? >> reporter: well, doreen, the ntsb says it hopes to have the entire investigation wrapped up by the anniversary date of this explosion. that means it could be up to a year before we know everything, but today we did get our first official answers as to exactly where this gas fuel explosion occurred and who was killed by it. 85 fire investigators dug through the debris and reviewed surveillance video and conducted 100

conclusion. >> this tragedy was the result of a natural gas explosion that occurred in the meter room of building 8701. this building which was located underneath apartment 101 >> reporter: meter room is similar to the one in this picture. there was no indication of criminal activity or anyone being in the meter room when the explosion occurred. some neighbors tell us they smelled gas weeks before the explosion. >> it was every day. i mean, whenever you walked by there, you could smell gas. >> reporter: now ntsb takes over the investigation to determine what ignited the leaking gas. the search team recovered seven bodies from the collapsed apartment building, but so far the remains of only three have been identified. >> augusto jimenez sr., maria castellon-martinez and saul paniagua. unfortunately, when we talk about the scienc

identification there's no quick solution. >> reporter: this man came to claim the bodies of his cousin and his cousin's wife. he leaves frustrated. >> they don't find the body. how do they know those people are dead, and we don't know how to tell their family. they saw this on social media and stuff, and they are devastated. i mean, we're not going to get the bodies of our relative today. >> reporter: ahead at 6:00, we'll hear from a resident of the building who tells us that he smelled gas leaking from the basement just moments before the explosion. that's coming up on "news 4 at 6:00." doreen, we'll send it back to you. >> all right. chris gordon reporting from silver spring. the youth pastor as one of the fastest growing churches in our region is in the prince william county jail tonight accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old girl at the church. northern

julie carey joins us now from manass manassas. >> reporter: the building you see behind me is a live church, one of four locations where thousands of members meet and tonight church leaders have issued a statement on behalf of the youth pastor jordan baird who says he denies the allegations against him. 25-year-old jordan baird is the youth pastor at the life church in manassas, but recently prince william county police were told he had an inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old girl that involved text messages and improper touching. >> through the course of our investigation we determined that the youth pastor on numerous occasions between january and september of 2015 sent inappropriate text messages as well as had inappropriate touch with the juvenile on multiple occasions. one of those instances was at the church. >> reporter: the life church is a family affair. jordan's father david is the

is the associate pastor. jordan led the youth groups here. today the church issued a statement saying that a church volunteer first notified leaders of the alleged misconduct in early june. they placed jordan baird on leave of absence as they conducted an internal investigation. then on july 13th prince william county police notified the church they were investigating. jordan was arrested yesterday. >> at this point we don't believe there are any other victims, but there may be a possibility that there could be, and so our investigation is still ongoing to identify if there are any other additional victims. >> reporter: but jordan baird, he is not the only church youth group leader arrested in prince william county. coming up on "news 4 at 6:00," i'll tell you about another young man who is accused in a completely separate case of also having inappropriate relations with a 16-year-old girl that he was trusted to minister to. >> thank you, julie. new at 5:00

george's county hospital officials confirm a potentially deadly bacteria was found in the hospital's water system. officials say the bacterium was discovered in six different sinks. four of those sinks were in the hospital's neo-natal intensive care unit. the discovery of the bacteria came after sources say two babies died inside the nicu. it remains unclear if the bacteria had anything to do with the baby's deaths. this led to the discovery that three babies had traces of the bacteria. all nine babies in the hospital's nicu were moved to children's national hospital center. earlier this week a hospital spokesman said more bacteria was discovered in an adult care unit outside the nicu. >> diligent work from these epidemiologists and infectious disease experts helped identify the water system as the source of the bacteria. patients are, as you know, are

hospital with the infection but the discovery of the bacteria in our water at prince george's was of serious concern to us. >> we're told there is no contamination in the drinking water surrounding the community outside the hospital the hospital says it's working to figure out how the bacterium entered its system. in the meantime, it's creating a new water filtration system. a huge setback for a d.c. landmark. now at 5:00 we just learned how long it will take to fix a recurring problem at the washington monument, and it's not going to be a quick fix. the views of the potomac can be breathtaking, we know, but not as much as a bizarre crime that police are investigating y.this alleged crime didn't stop with a holdup. >> as the games come to a close i'm going to show you my personal highlights. >> and low humidity across the area this afternoon. checking out the weekend, we've got a chance fore

it looked like it will be another ten days before anyone can take in the view from the top of the washington monument. it's been closed since wednesday. a cable broke loose causing the elevator to stop up near the top of the monument. the elevator has broken down twice over the weekend, and issues have plagued that elevator for weeks and months now. today the park service said staff and technicians will do a thorough evaluation. elevator. a new elevator control system is in the works. a traffic alert before you head out for the night. right now hundreds of motorcyclists are on their way to the pentagon as part of america's 9/11 ride. chopper 4 over the scene today. a couple of hours ago the group barreled along the dulles toll road here in fairfax. the ride began this morning in shanksville, pennsylvania. the group heads to new york city tomorrow. this is the 16th year for the ride meant to honor first responders. here's more on how it could impact

>> i'm here with your first traffic. you could see delays of up to 90 minutes. america's 9/11 ride. we're expecting 1,500 motorcycles to be traveling this route. again, it wraps up at 6:00 this evening. this is when at least we expect these traffic slowdowns to wrap up. as far as the ride, highlighted it for you right here. here it is spelled out. 15 south to 7 and then they are going to come in on the greenway, the toll road and 66 inbound to 110 to get to the pentagon. hope have you a great weekend. i'll see you monday morning for "news 4 today." we just learned that president obama is heading to the scene of the deadly flooding down in louisiana. late this afternoon the white house announced the president will travel to baton rouge next tuesday. he's been getting updates on the response and recovery while vacationing with his family in martha's vineyard. the tet toll from that flooding stands at 13 with 40,000 homes damaged.

a pretty nice day out there today on our friday. happy friday, by the way. weekend right around the corner, and part of the weekend is looking pretty good. the other part not so good. we'll talk about that in a sec. take a look outside. one thing that was not there today, you probably noticed, the humidity. yes. it was still rather hot. we saw some sunshine today. high

low 90s and right now we're at 90 degrees but the dew points are in the low 60s and that means we're fairly comfortable across the region so not even talking about a heat index. it is 90 and it feels like 90. 86 in fredericks. thurmont 81. most everybody in the 80s and that's where we'll stay tomorrow. a day very similar to what we are seeing. redskins taking on the jets. 7:30 gametime. 87 degrees at gametime and 85, a perfect night for the game because once the sun goes down without the humidity it will feel quite nice and by 11:00 temperatures around 82 degrees. looking pretty good as they take on the jets. find that on cozi. a few showers back to the west and the mountains but not going to get in towards our area at all. what is coming in, a few clouds from time to time. that's really about it. the wider view just showing a

organized systems. strong storms in the carolinas and for us looking pretty good. as a matter of fact tomorrow i think another great day. just like today. a high of 91. still hot and low humidity so not feeling all that warm out there. heading down towards the beaches, a nice weekend for the beach. tomorrow looking great with a high of 85. and 84 on sunday. you'll see some afternoon and late day showers. a couple of thunderstorms, too. some of those could be on the strong side sunday evening and then that moves through and brings out an offshore flow on monday. temperature around 85 degrees. it will be breezy on monday and an offshore flow also means that the water is going to be cooler on monday, too. you've got nice water temperatures saturday and monday might be a little on the cool side. hot temperatures is what we've seen over the past week and a half. you need a big front to come through and that's what's coming on sunday and why we have a good chance of rain on sunday. still rather warm on sunday and then behind this system, high pressure moves overhead. nice cool weather moves in. when i'm talking cool, i'm saying 50s for many of you

on monday, tuesday, wednesday morning. in the city we'll still be in the 60s and in the suburbs i think you'll be in the upper 50s during the middle of the week. high temperatures into the low 80s. low to mid-80s monday, tuesday, wednesday and even thursday before we start to get a little bit warmer and back to 91. next week i'll tell you one of the best weeks we've had in quite some time. we need a little break from the heat. >> do we ever. thanks for the good news, doug. new developments tonight about the spread of the zika virus in florida. south beach now considered to be an infection zone after five cases of zika have been linked to that community in miami. there are now 36 zika cases across the state involving people who did not travel outside the u.s. it's believed all of these cases are linked to mosquitos. miami's winwood arts district in dade county was the first florida neighborhood identified as an infection zone. >> police say a man stops to take in theview of the scenic potomac when all of a sudden he's being held up at

police tonight are looking for the driver they say hit and killed a man and didn't bother to stop. >> the crash happened early this morning at the intersection of new hampshire avenue and m street northwest between dupont and washington circle. news 4's dorothy spencer joins us live with what we're learning about the victim. dorothy? >> reporter: well, this is the intersection where it hapned. you can see it's a very, very busy place. this afternoon d.c. police released a surveillance video showing the car they are hoping for. they are hoping that someone recognized that case and will help them solve this case. the video of the bright blue striking car is dark, but right now it's the best chance d.c. police have of finding the driver who struck and killed a pedestrian early friday morning. that pedestrian, david narvellas was 29 years old and lived in arlington and was hit here in new hash

and the driver didn't stop. police released the video taken from a surveillance camera and two pictures as they tried to find the car. >> we're looking for this vehicle that left the scene of the accident last night. >> reporter: it happened at an intersection that many that we spoke to describe as dangerous with heavy traffic, bikes and pedestrians all shang the road. >> when i walk to work that's the way i walk. we were talking about that in the office, like it could have been any of us, which was like pretty scary, you know. >> reporter: it's the second pedestrian fatality in two days in d.c. there have been five so far this year. thursday a popular restaurant owner was hit and killed. that driver stayed on the scene. the district is working toward a goal of having no traffic fatalities by the year 2024. it's called vision zero. >> we're being making improvement, but, again, any time there's a life lost, that's one too many. >> reporter: that's right. now coming up on "news 4 at 6:00," what one man told us today could be done to make this

>> darcy spencer, darcy, thank you. new at 5:30, a bizarre armed robbery at the george washington parkway overlook. a man called park police to tell them he'd been held up at gunpoint around 6:00 last night. he says he was forced into the potomac river and the robber told him to swim across. once that man made it to the d.c. side he alerted police. during the search they detained two people but police had to let them go because the victim could not positively identify them as the attackers. they took his cell phone and wallet. we just learned new information about the man involved in a police shooting in prince george's county. police shot and wounded terrance franklin. franklin was wanted for a series of violent crimes. he now faces even more charges. police tell us they tried to stop franklin as he drove along shady glen terrace in capital

gun and he was shot in the arm. police say a gun was recovered at the scene. now to a story you may have seen first on your phone. the news 4 i-team broke the story on twitter. there will be fewer slot machines at the mgm casino when it opens at the end of the year. they are trimming the number of slot machines by 10%. the casino was granted permission to have 3,600 slot machines. maryland's lottery and gaming agency approved the request to have just over 3,300 machines at opening. in a presentation to state regulators, mgm said the evolving nature of slot machines including multiple denomination games will actually increase revenue. well, this is definitely not the way you want to test drive to go. many of you saw this earlier on our facebook page. a woman went for a test drive at the mercedes dealership in balston and wound up hitting the gas and slammed into four vehicles at a high rate of speed. check it out. after a sharp turn you

in prince george's county a man was sentenced to prison after he was found guilty of shaking and killing his girlfriend's baby. >> new tonight the shocking 911 call the boyfriend made after he took the child's life. prince george's county bureau chief tracee wilkins shares a message from the county's state's attorney to all parents. >> my name is corie brown. i'm calling for my boyfriend. >> reporter: core reason bryant called 911 for help after his girlfriend's 6-month-old daughter appeared unresponsive. >> oh, my god. please, hurry up. >> reporter: he claims she may have had a seizure. >> i think she had a seizure. >> you think she had a seizure. >> reporter: feigned sort of panic in the phone where he called and requested 911 assistance when in fact as it turns out following investigation we realized that he was the person who killed this baby. >> reporter: bryant was sentenced for shaking and

learned at least one teenager is charged in connection with a chaotic and deadly shooting in fredericksburg. >> reports of a victim. going to have a gunshot wound to the leg and possibly another victim. >> this was a dispatch call you were listening to after gunfire broke out at thewood apartments around midnight. neighbors told news 4 they heard commotion and gunshots and saw at least one man run bleeding down the sidewalk. police found one man dead behind that building. now they have identified him as 21-year-old christopher williams. neighbors tell us they were shaken. >> it's scary. nothing happened like that over here. i'll be keeping my doors locked and won't be opening my doors for nobody. >> still waiting to learn what led to that gunfire. a 1-year-old was wounded at the building, and he's in jail on stolen weapons charges. an 18-year-old also shot in the incident is still in the hospital and f
