joining us this midday. i'm eun yang. >> i'm melissa molette. we'll have a look at your headlines in just a minute. >> what a great change, a break from all the humidity, how long is this going to last, though? >> it is gorgeous out there and it is going to last quite some time, fortunately for all of us we were due to have some low humidity and plenty of sun, which is what we're seeing out there today. this is from national harbor camera. my goodness, i bet it's hopping down there on such a beautiful day. temperatures not that bad, 79. that's what it is right now. we started this morning in the 60s and 70s really depending on your location. a nice northwest breeze you may notice from time to time clouds in and out. there's a lot of sunshine in most areas. we're going to keep that sunshine going through much of the day. temperatures will top out in the lower to mid-80s by the time we head into this afternoon. but i've got t

ten-day forecast may surprise you just a little bit. when could that humidity come back? that's what we'll be talking about coming up in just a few minutes, guys. family and friends are saying good-bye to christopher barry. his visitation is taking place in southeast washington right now. his funeral is there tonight. krchristopher barry died of a dg overdose just over a week ago. he was the son of marion barry, d.c.'s mayor over a decade. the temple of praise is the same place mayor barry's funeral took place two years ago. christopher barry will lie in repose until his public funeral at 6:00 p.m. always a lot of excitement, back to school is here. schools all have to start classes again. derrick ward is live in northeast washington now at alton middle school. derrick, good morning. >> reporter: good

and just as exciting. derrick ward, back to you. >> derrick, thank you. right now prince george's county police want you to take a good look at this backpack. they believe it may lead them to a murderer. they say the person wearing the backpack in these photos shot and killed a 7-eleven employee. then after that he rocked a hotel. the crime spree happened in clinton, maryland, over the weekend. today news4's david culver caught up with customers who go to that 7-eleven all the time and he'll share their emotional reaction a little bit later in the show. and we're learning more about another murder, this one in upper marlboro. he learned the victim's name. damien rowlett was shot yesterday. he was 22 years old. in just under an hour, virginia governor terry mcauliffe will make an announcement on the voting rights of former felons. today's announcement comes after the virginia supreme court struck down his executive order

the court ruled he can only restore rights on a case-by-case basis. the search continues for a motorcyclist who shot an off-duty firefighter in the face. it happened over the weekend on southern avenue in southeast. d.c. police say the firefighter's young daughter was with him in the car when he was shot. she was not hurt. the firefighters you know 81 said he was airlifted to shock trauma in baltimore and is expected to recover. you now have one month before a red light camera starts giving you a ticket. alexandria's sixth camera goes live today. the camera is handsing out warnings for now but that will change on september 22nd. donald trump's campaign may be shifting positions on a key issue, immigration. it comes as hillary clinton continues to try and label trump as insulting. nbc's edward lawrence has the latest. >> reporter: after meeting with

donald trump may be reconsidering his stance on deporting 11 million illegal immigrants. >> we need a, quote, fair and, quote, humane way of dealing with what is estimated to be about 11 million illegal immigrants in this country. >> reporter: trump campaign manager kellyanne conway went on to say his position is, quote, to be determined as he considers policies that would help hispanic businesses grow. >> i believe that donald trump's upside is far greater than hillary clinton's upside. >> reporter: in a new tv ad, hillary clinton questions trump's temperament. >> and calm judgment. >> and you can tell them to go [ bleep ] themselves. >> reporter: meanwhile the clinton campaign says her foundation will no longer take foreign donations should she become president. >> the foundation is in the process of figuring out how to refocus, reshift. >> reporter: this is a highly contentious race with more scrutiny than other previous presidential races. experts say donald trump's campaign is trying to broaden his al

voters. edward lawrence, nbc news, washington. meanwhile, the e-mail controversy surrounding hillary clinton continues to cast a shadow over her campaign. now former secretary of state colin powell is weighing in after a report last week that he advised clinton to use a personal. mail account. he told "people" magazine her people have been trying to pin it on me. powell went on to say that clinton had been using a private e-mail serve her for a year whee sent her a letter telling her what he did. i'm kristin wright here at the live desk. a federal judge in texas is blocking the obama administration's directive to u.s. public schools that said that public schools must allow transgender students to use the bathroom or locker rooms consistent with their gender identity. texas and 12 other states say that is unconstitutional. back in ma the education and justice department sent letters to all public

welcome back. a man walks out of his home ready to head to work only to find out someone has stolen all four wheels from his car. >> ryan morgan said that happened to him last week. he said someone took off the wheels from his chevy tahoe that was parked in the driveway last sunday. the next morning he woke up, found his truck sitting there on bricks. he believes this is the work of preefgsales since the thieves didn't leave any fingerprints. many of you have insurance for just about every aspect of your life, your home, your health. here's one type of insurance you may not know about. >> volunteerism insurance basically came into play after the 9/11 attack because that was such a huge loss for the entry.

terrorist attacks of september 11th, 2001, the terrorism risk insurance act or tria was born. >> the government had to step in and help insurance companies cover terrorism for those businesses that obviously needed it. >> reporter: over the last 14 years or so, insurance policies have been required by the act to offer terrorism insurance built in. as the years passed, the government has been responsible for less and less of the damages. >> the trigger right now is at $100 million. so if you have buildings like the world trade center, those buildings are worth hundreds of millions of dollars. terrorism insurance, that's really what the tria act is meant to pay for. >> any damages up to $100 million are to be covered by the insurance company. there's another caveat. >> the tria act actually only covers acts by terrorist attacks from foreign governments. >

i'm kristin wright at the live deck. right now a former ceo indicted in a huge stock options scandal ten years ago. it's finally returning to the u.s. to face charges. jacob kobi alexander will plead guilty this wednesday, we're told. he has been living in nabibia since 2006. he was scheduled to appear before a judge today to end the proceedings to come back to the u.s. to face those charges. he was indicted in 2006. he's also accused of money laundering. he

and indicted in a huge sweeping federal investigation into fraud. back to you. >> all right, thank you, kristin. the controversy surrounding ryan lochte continues this morning. nbc's matt lauer sat down with him for an exclusive interview to discuss what he calls his childish behavior. >> so you guys go to the bathroom in the bushes. you walk -- by the way it's been described to me, it's a metal-framed poster of some kind or advertisement of some kind and you just ripped it off the wall? >> yeah. and i have no idea -- i mean i was very intoxicated. i have no idea why. it was immature. it was childish. >> and it made a big noise. >> and it made a big noise. and we continued to walk out and get in the taxi. >> jimmy, jack, gunnar, did they damage or destroy or vandalize

place at risk of an outbreak of the zika virus. dr. anthony fauci at nih says texas and louisiana may start seeing cases after the widespread flooding in both states. just as students are going back to class in florida, the risk area is growing bigger there. melissa adon is live from miami beach. >> reporter: from south beach to the bay this is part of south florida's new zika zone and florida officials are taking action to prepare students going back to school today. the new zika zone is in miami beach, just six miles from wynwood where the virus first showed up. three schools are in the zika zone and health officials passing insect repellent all to prepare students heading back to class today. >> we are distributi two long-sleeve uniform shirts and uniform pants to ensure that the students in the three affected girls in the zika zone here in miami beach havero

clothing. >> i'm going to spray this, make sure i have long pants on and i'm wearing my long t-shirt. >> reporter: later today governor rick scott and state leaders will visit a miami-dade middle school in the wynwood zika zone where they'll discuss their efforts on how to combat the virus here in south florida. i'm melissa adan in miami beach. back to you. two car companies are warning of new problems that could put you in danger on the roads. nearly 65,000 hyundai elawn trays have been recalled for brake issues. the pedal can deteriorate and cause the transmission to slip out of park without applying the brake pedal at all. mitsubishi is recalling 82,000 2015 and 2016 outlander sports because of a problem affecting accelerators. if you're thinking about taking a summer vacation, lakd is just two weeks from today but as chris clackum shows us,

trying to get out of town. >> reporter: the last two weeks of the summer vacation season are upon us. it will culminate in a long labor day holiday weekend where record travel might occur because of travel bargains. >> affordable airfare and a strong hotel market really are making it advantageous time for travelers to get away. >> reporter: historically low gas prices are still where consumers are saving the most, but that's not the only way to save. >> we're seeing flight prices lower than we've seen the past couple seasons. >> reporter: airline tickets might be cheaper too, but don't plan on using frequent flier miles. labor day weekend is another blackout period. although cnbc's kelly grant says you still better be using them somehow and soon. >> you might never use those points at all. just because they will expire in a lot of cases if you are not actively participating in

a lot of damage caused by the heavy winds and rain associated with the typhoon. we're hearing of possible landslides that could happen there. several people hurt. you see some lady there trying to walk down the street but so windy there, there you go, an umbrella. at least there isn't a lot of rain in the forecast in the days to come and that's good news. however, hundreds of flights in and out of tokyo had to be cancelled because of the typhoon and some of the air traffic controllers up in the tower had to get out because of all of the wind. back to you, we'll keep you posted. it's time to check the forecast and i cannot wait to get outsides. >> lauryn ricketts, you're the woman today. >> finally, finally we're stepping up into that game because it's been so hot and humid. >> it really has been. >> i don't want the summer to end, i really don't. >> i don't either. >> once you get to the end of august, it's like wah, wah. >> but at least there's really nice weather out there as it accompanies us to the end of st

for us. this week it's just going to be absolutely perfect. sunny and cool our average temperature for this time of year is in the mid-80s and i do believe we'll make it into the mid-80s today but a lot of areas will stay in the lower 80s. tomorrow morning another great morning out there. we're going to have plenty of sunshine and, again, low humidity. there's the kicker. all right, current temperature 79, that is it here in d.c. 77 in dulles. we've got one low 80 in fauquier county but otherwise not looking too bad. we're on our way into the lower and mid-80s today. we'll keep that humidity in check and also keep a little bit of a breeze out there anywhere from 8 to 16 miles an hour. now, the bus stop, kids are headed back to work. we're at the end of august. not back to work, back to school. plenty of sunshine and mid-80s. it's going to be great for them to come on home. if they want to get outside a little bit, it's going to be

again, that's what high pressure will do, taking out all the clouds and any chances of rain. for the next 12 hours you're looking at sunny conditions. again, the low to mid-80s. overnight temperatures will be in the 50s and 60s really depending on where you are and then we're back in the low 80s for tomorrow. plenty of plenty of sunshine and low humidity. in fact we'll keep those temperatures at or just below average today. they'll gradually move up this week but we'l keep that humidity level at that comfy level. and then we get to about friday and you'll start to feel that humidity a little bit more. for the next five days, again, by wednesday, mid to upper 80s. we're already at that 90-degree mark on thursday and friday. the next chance of rain is friday but i've got some surprises for the weekend. that's coming up in just a few minutes. guys. >> all right, thank you. well, we may have said an official good-bye to the rio games. >> i didn't wanting to. >> i know. this is the beginning for some marylandle

an alarming string of crimes in clinton, maryland. police are looking for someone they say killed a 7-eleven employee and then robbed a hotel. david culver is at that 7-eleven on brandywine road. >> reporter: you can see a very

outside of this clinton 7-eleven. inside a spoke to some of the clerks who are working today and there is an obvious sadness in their eyes as they mourn the loss of one of their colleagues. police are searching for the man responsible for what they say were two back-to-back violent crimes. we watched james pinckney study the wanted poster as he walked into his go-to 7-eleven. when he walked out, his face said it all. >> when you walked out, you and i connected eyes and you said this has got to stop. >> it doesn't make sense. go get a job. i mean there's no amount of money in there, no amount of merchandise that you can trade off for that man's life. >> it's just unbelievable. >> reporter: ricky stevens broke into tears as we told him the name of the man that was killed, a clerk he knew well. >> very, very nice, always loved the fact that i would ask how

saturday morning, police say this man walked into the 7-eleven off of brandy wine road and tried to rob it. he opened fire, killing the 31-year-old clerk. from the 7-eleven police believe the same suspect went about five minutes down the road where he robbed a nearby hotel. two violent crimes in just a few minutes' time. the surveillance images not showing a face, but police hope you may recognize the distinctive clothes or backpack. >> just unacceptable for someone to lose their life at the 7-eleven trying to make a living for their family. >> and the sign on the door reading a $25,000 reward for anyone who has information for either of these crimes. they hope you can help solve the crime as well. i'm david culver, news4. breaking news right now at the live desk. speedo is dropping ryan lochte. i'll read part of the statement from speedo. while we have enjoyed a winnin

relationship with ryan for over a decade and he has been an important member of the speedo team, we cannot condone behavior that is counter to the values this brand has long stood for. we appreciate his many achievements and hope he moves forward and learns from this experience. speedo says it will donate $50,000 from lochte's sponsorship fee to save the children. so that's the breaking news coming into us from speedo this morning saying that they will drop their sponsorship of olympic swimmer ryan lochte. this coming, of course, after all of the drama involving lochte and his overexaggerating, as he put it, of the gas station incident that he first called an armed robbery. melissa, back to you. well, it's the first day of school for thousands of students in d.c. and frederick county, maryland. that means a fresh start for both kids and parents. >> plus it's an exciting day for everyone involved. one of the keys to staying on track all year long is being prepared.

we're following several new reports about the health of a former major league baseball player. gooden pitched with the new york mets in the 1980s and has struggled with a cocaine addiction for several years. his former teammate, darryl strawberry, said over the weekend that gooden is in horrible condition and that he wants to help him. montgomery county police want your help right now to find this missing man. take a look. they say he disappeared from the colesville area last night. he was last seen getting on a bus near his home on sherwood forest drive. he is 79 years old. prince george's county police say a teenager is missing right now. 13-year-old destiny sidibe was last

seen her. friends and family are remembering a teenager with an up-an-coming career in music. douglas brooks was 18 years old. he was a rapper. friends and colleagues say he always greeted his fans and took pictures with them after he performed. he also cared about reaching out to the community. >> he took his star and he used it in a positive way to say, hey, kids, i'm from where you are but i'm still doing it. >> he performed at the birthday bash and that is the video you're looking at here. he was shot and killed in suitland. smoothies are a real summer treat but they have caused a major

deadly apartment explosion are starting to move on. the shelter housing closed on sunday but not before everyone was giving housing options. they can move into another apartment owned by the management company of the flower branch apartment complex. another option, they can stay in a hotel or affordable housing managed by montgomery county. only 20 people remained in the shelter as of saturday night. repairs are expected to be completed nearly a week after this transformer explosion in downtown washington. lanes of l street between 18th and 19th were reopened this morning for the first time since last monday's fire. an underground transformer exploded and knocked out power to more than 100 customers. the cause of that fire is still under investigation. the tropical smoothie cafe chain in virginia is linked to a number of hepatitis a cases. the state health department said ten people came down with hepatitis a after eating smoothies with strawberries in them. the chain says they have stopped using those strawberries, which

the health department says customers who have smoothies from august 5th to 8th could still benefit from a vaccine to prevent the disease. the olympic games in rio are officially over. there were a lot of concerns over the first games ever to be held in south america but now brazil was a winning choice. brian mooar has a recap from rio. >> reporter: rio brought us awe-inspiring feats of athleticism and real-life displays of the olympic spirit. michael phelps earned his place as arguably or not the greatest olympian ever. katie ledecky and simone manuel made american proud while ryan lochte and three other swimmers landed in trouble for a false robbery report. simone biles suffered one slip but won four golds and lifted her team to glory. americans were strong on the track. >> it's going to be the u.s.! >> reporter: there were olympian upsets, women knocked out of soccer, venus and serena

curling! >> curling. oh, curling. >> you knew what i was talking about. >> no, i was thinking like luge, something like that. okay, all right. well, it's not going to be cold enough to do that any time soon, although this morning, whoo it was a little chilly out there but a refreshing shock to the system. it's beautiful out there right now. this is our live city camera. oh, gorgeous, thanks to high pressure in charge. current temperatures right now in the mid to upper 70s. we've got some 80s out there. f fredericksburg at the 80-degree mark. for the next several hours, low to mid-80s, looking good with plenty of sunshine out there. and again, that sunshine is not going anywhere, maybe a few clouds here and there but we're going to be dry, nothing showing up on the radar at this point. and even if we widen this out, thanks to this high pressure over the ohio valley, look at that, just carved out a nice area of sunshine all the way

>> now, your title is director of culinary innovation. that's pretty fancy. >> yeah. it's a dream come true. all i get to do now is i create dishes. anything that inspires me or motivates me. we try it out on live guests and what sticks with, we play with on the regular menu and what doesn't, we move on with. >> i can be your guinea pig today. what are you making for us? >> we're doing a little play on a fall-winter dish, it's candied apples but we're stuffing them with brie, candied bacon, cranberries, pecans and good old-fashioned caramel. >> looks good. so where do we begin. >> first we're going to grab these little mini apples. >> what kind of that? >> it's a little lady macin tosh apple. we just put a simple pocket in here. we have some of the precut, premixed stuff. stuff it first with the brie. >> first the cheese th

and then the walnut stuff? >> pecans and bacon. >> and that's what this is? >> yeah. all chopped up. >> and the caramel, cranberry and the becpecans all in here a you shove this in here with the brie. is that good? >> that's very good. do the same thing again. >> you keep going and i'll stuff this one. we're just going to top this off. then when we get these all full, we take a little caramel and pop it right on top. this just goes into the oven for 20 minutes at 300 degrees until the caramel uses ov-- oozes ove the side. underneath we put a little balsalmic glaze. >> i feel like people are very particular about what they want to eat. how do you meet these dema

people who want specific things on the menu? >> we try to make everything to order. those we don't make to order, we try to have escape routes that we can go. this doesn't have garlic in the beginning, this doesn't have wine in the beginning. we can always make a risotto the way we conceived it but if you want it without wine or without cheese or without butter, we put all that into order. so we want to conceive the dish but we can always take things out. >> so give us an example of what else you have on the menu. i know you brought some lovely items here. >> these are all off of our chef's tasting menu. we have bacon cured bones. baby back ribs cured like bacon. my wife is from colombia, bowinga tau so this comes from the streets of bogota. it's grilled corn rolled with a little feta and bacon and parmesan. this is our pig and peach crustini. so goat cheese and a
