it's recorded 37 home grown cases of zika in the case. not everyone is concerned. >> many have applied insect repellent. but there are no worries. >> there is no evidence that the zika virus is dangerous for children. in fact, they are unlikely even to show symptoms as is the case for most people. families say what they are worried about are the kids' pregnant mothers and the potential for serious birth defects. i team has found many people in this area are concerned about mosquitos and standing water this morning. after receiving several calls and emails about viewers about standing water complaints, theism team found calls to local health departments have popped as much as 270% so far this summer when compared to all of last year. experts say you need to tip and toss water at least once a week so mosquitos can't grow into those biting pests that we ate so much.

going to take a minute, you know, to get used to that. a d.c. community activist and son of the late mayor marion barry has been laid to rest. family and friends of christopher barry paid their respects tonight. funeral services were held at the temple of praise in southeast washington. he died earlier this month from an apparent drug overdose. he was 36 years old. i'm kristin wright at the live desk. new numbers in this morning from that awful flooding in ellicott city just a few weeks ago. $22.4 million in damages and repairs at least. howard county is estimating that. it could go up. the storm hit about three weeks ago and now these damage estimates confirmed what everyone believed, ju how awful it was. 107 homes damaged. 90 businesses. howard county right now requesting $12 million from the

more with what you can do to protect yourself. >> reporter: experts say long sleeves and pants is a good way to prevent yourself from getting beaten by a mosquito but let's face it it's not practical when we have this hot weather. what's really important that you have bug repellent and you spray yourself. here's the problem, health experts say not only have a few mosquitos tested positive for west nile in montgomery and prince george's counties. one person in western maryland has been infected with the virus. there are a few things you can do to try and prevent these bugs from breeding. experts say fix dripping faucets. turn garbage can lids upside down and flip over weigheding pools. the idea is to try and get rid of all that standing water that may be around your house or at play grounds so they can try and keep these bugs away. back to you. >>

bethesda. >> reporter: good morning. it's the things a lot of us already know. wearing long sleeved shirts and pants and protecting exposed skin, but the temperatures we see in august not always practica practical. officials say use insect repellant. here's the issue. health experts say they are seeing mosquitos in prince george's and montgomery county that are testing positive for west nile virus. they confirmed one case, one person has been infected in the western part of maryland. so a lot of things that folks can do. if you've got some tires hanging around on the outside of your home collecting water, make sure you drain that water out and also say wading pools or trash can lids that might be upside down, flip those over and, of course, those baths thaw use for the birts -
