could be felt hundreds of miles away in rome. but officials warn the death toll is expected to rise. local media reporting 13 deaths and people still trapped beneath the rubble amid widespread blackouts and looking at these live pictures you can see tons of rescue workers. multiple trues on the scene and i'm sure many other places as well trying to dig people out of the rubble. so far 13 people are dead in this earthquake, but with aftershocks and with people still trying to find their loved ones we're going to be hearing more about how many tepeople we in fact affected by that. in the meantime 49 states down. one more to go the zika virus reported

technical difficulties but the tremors have been felt. the first recorded outside the town of norcia which is about 100 miles away from rome so that gives you the stretch of where these tremors could be felt. multiple aftershocks and as you see right there in these live pictures, people still trying to rescue those trapped underneath the rubble. so far we understand by local media that at least 13 people are dead due to this earthquake. i want to take you back now to lucy and see if we can get her on the phone. i know it's been a little bit difficult with the situation there, but lucy, are you with us? >> caller: yes. i can hear you just fine. incredibly powerful quake that struck around 6:30 a.m. local time. it was powerful enough to wake me up in rome nearly 100 miles away. right now we are very close to

the earthquake. we have seen rescue crews rushing to the scene, bringing bulldozers trying to bring rescue workers to pull people out of the rubble. officials say there are still people trapped in some of the buildings. entire homes have been razed. that means this is full of tourists who have been visiting staying in these towns and so they're a lot more populated than they would normally be. there have been casualties reported. we're probably not going to get the full scale of the devastation until all of the bodies have been recovered from being trapped under the rubble. >> all right. we're having a little difficulty hearing you. obviously service is being affected by the devastation that we're seeing on our screen right there, but again, a powerfu

this morning after a 6.2 earthquake struck there overnight. we have a live picture from on the ground there. this is central italy we're talking about. about 100 miles from rome. three people from the rubble. we know that the army has been mobilized to try to rescue people. this happened at 3:30 in the morning their time. people literally sleeping in their beds when their roofs suddenly collapse. 13 people are dead so far. that could change. that number could certainly rise in the coming hours. this was felt more than 100 miles away in rome. people, look at that pile of rubble there. people trapped under the rubble. the mayor of one town saying the town isn't here anymore. now weil possibly be hearing about aftershocks in the coming hours. back to you. >> devastating scene,

more. it's 4:30. happening today, parts of main street in ellicott city will reopen. it's several weeks after flooding in the city killed two people and destroyed several businesses. howard county officials hope to have part of the downtown parking lot open by saturday. prince george's county board of education want leaders replaced. five members are demanding the chair and vice chair step down after the investigation into the headstart program. they lost $6 million in federal funding after claims of student abuse. the board members wrote i letter saying the leaders did not keep them informed. baker is happy with the job of leaders are doing. >> i have all the confidence in the world. he's done a great job. dr. maxwell, we've seen improvements in the school, graduation rates are up. improvements in early childhood education. so we're going
