the death toll is climbing. the tragedy in italy is more clear. >> kristin wright has been following every new development and joins us live from the live desk. >> we want to show you live pictures off the top coming to us from italy on the ground. right now, there is a search for survivor survivors: we don't have the live pictures yet but we have video of the ground that shows the devastation of this earthquake. it is a 6.2 magnitude quake. the death toll right now standing at 37. that number, though, in situations like this, as always, keeps changing. we do expect it to rise. you're looking at here piem looking at the rubble on the ground. the earthquake hitting in the middle of the night as people are sleeping. people are buried in this rubble. two towns leveled. about 100 milesfr

after the quake came aftershocks. we have also seen images this morning of some dramatic rescues happening. as i said, searches going on continuously for survivors of this quake. we'll stay on top of it for you throughout the morning. a station in north carolina is reporting that the elon university's women's basketball team is in italy right now. but that their coach says that they did feel it but that they are okay. so right now we're checking around to see what other americans, what other groups of students may be in italy right now. we're staying on top of this earthquake in italy all morning. at the live desk, i'm kristin wright. good morning. it is 6:01 on a wednesday morning. i'm storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell. skies mostly clear in the overnight hours allowing for temperatures to drop back down into the 60s. comfortable again this morning. enjoy it. our warming trend starts today but

the weekend. sunny and warm and your evening plans to be outside. dinner and barbecuing in the backyard. 59 in frederick, maryland. one of the few spots back into the 50s early this morning. highs today, 82 in gaithersburg. 86 in waldorf and la plate a. the let's go over to melissa mollet tracking troubles on the beltway all morning. >> troubles on the beltway continue. a live report from meagan fitzgerald on the scene. particular a look at the inner loop at river road. a one-mile backup as you head nb. inner loop at river road. another problem, top of the beltway, outer loop before georgia. left lane blocked by a crash. that backup has started to build in the past couple of minutes. southbound bw parkway after the bemt way, still that report of police activity before the good luck road overpass and one other new issue this morning.

follow police direction. the two issues on the beltway, going to follow them an they will cause slowdowns. it's 6:03. a messy situation on the inner loop of the beltway as melissa mentioned. this after a tractor-trailer carrying trash flipped. >> the driver was trying to avoid another car when this happened. meagan fitzgerald is there with more. what do you know, meagan? >> reporter: aaron and eun, police tell us this happened at 1:00 this morning. you can see the overturned tractor-trailer. if there is a bit of good news, the fact that it happened on the right hand shoulder of the lane. not affecting traffic as badly as it could. what's happening now. crews are going inside that tractor-trailer to try to move out all of the contents of tractor-trailer which was boxes of trash bags. they're throwing it into a dump truck. they tell us they're doing this so that they're able to lift up that tractor-trailer and haul it out of

but they're not going to do that until after rush hour at 9:00 this morning, they're going to block off three of the four lanes on 495 northbound here at the river road exit. so they're asking folks to avoid the area at 9:00 if possible. that process will take about an hour to clear this scene here. we're told the driver was charged with negligent driving. no injuries to report. back to you. >> meagan, thank you. we also have an update on breaking news news. a deadly shooting in montgomery county. police put out new information on this. they say that a man in his early 20s was shot and killed on soipd spring road in burtonsville overnight. we're working to find out his name. they don't believe it was a random act of violence. they think the man who died and the shooter knew each other. we'll update you as soon as we learn more. today marks a big step in the recovery process for

ellicott city. parts of main street expected to reopen today. this comes several weeks after flooding in that city killed two people and destroyed several businesses. while this step is good news for business owners, they hope the money they lost will, by being forced to close their doors will be recovered soon. i'm in a survival mode right now. hopefully, we'll get enough customers back to continue to pay bills, pay rent, pay expenses and keep going. that's my goal. >> howard county officials say that krugs still have a lot of paving work to do. they hope to have the downtown parking lot open by saturday. only on news 4 this morning, we're hearing from the man who rose through the ranks of the d.c. police department and will soon become interim chief. peter newsome will ache over for cathy lanier retiring in september. he knows the community and the police force and his priority will be to maintain a good relationship between t

safety, you go out to community meetings. most of the folks that are in those meetings are saying positive things about the metropolitan police department. >> lanier will become senior vice president of security for the nfl. a nationwide search for her official replacement is already under way. five members of the prince george's county board of education are demanding the chair and vice chair resign. this comes after investigation into the county's headstart program. the school system lost more than $6 million in federal funding after claims of student abuse. the board members wrote a letter saying leaders did not keep them informed. county executive baker is happy with the job the school leaders are doing. >> i have all the confidence in the world and he's done a great job. dr. maxwell, we've seen improvements in the school, graduation rates are up. we've seen improvements in early childhood education. we're going to move

the way. 270 sothbound, no problems. top of the beltway very slow because of that problem at georgia avenue. 66 and 95, no problems there. back in a few minutes with more on the news on the beltway. melissa, thank you. a maryland state legislator is responding to the investigation of the baltimore police department. it comes after city leaders pledged to seek new state laws as a result of the doj report. but the chairman of the key state senate committee says there are some things state law won't fix. >> they're going to have to deal with their police department. that's the way it works. what makes sense in baltimore city does not make sense in frederick county. zurk insees a state role in other findings of that report. he sees the state considering further reforms this coming session in police training and the use of body cameras. the price of epipens has

't do.an't imagine there's go, zion. we're getting another account of the incident involving four swimmers who claimed to have been robbed. jimmy feigen is accused of vandalizing a gas station. in a statement, he says he was terrified when a security officer pulled a gun on them. that happened at the gas station after the alleged vandalism. he also said he left several facts out of his story. the first time he told it. specifically that the teammates urinated on the side of the gas station and that rye on lochte pulled a framed poster off the wall. he said "i realize i made a mistake omitting these facts. i was trying to protect my teammates. for this apologize". team usa had a come nabt performance in the rio olympics. >> it's a local olympian and gracious and humble tam ents who showed off her amazing skills. i spent

katie ledecky. she has a busy schedulement moving right along to stanford university where she will swim. do you remember the moment when she broke her own moment. at one moment she looked all alone in the pool. that didn't cause her to slow down for a second. >> you can't take anything for granted when you're out front or favored to win or anything like that. i had to focus on how i wanted to put together that race. it was my last race in rio. i wanted to make it count. >> boyd she ever. she broke her own world record. katie and i talked about all the experiences. this was at her alma mater in bethesda, stone ridge. she appreciates her family, community and all the people who show her support over the years. she took home five medals, four gold, one silver. i didn't put them on. i didn't want to scratch them. >> i was afraid.

and aaron. you've seen donald trump this last week make this pitch and push. we saw it here in texas. as we look ahead to a couple of -- he's got a visit to jackson, mississippi. then tomorrow, we've learned that he'll be meeting with republican, african-american and hispanic activists to talk a little bit about his policies, his position when is it comes to things like immigration. when this comes to his outreach to minority communities. this is fairly new for trump. as you talk about, it's only something you've seen him talk about publicly and push hard on publicly for maybe six or seven days or so. it's a real uphill challenge. the lace he's survey monkey online poll shows he trails hillary clinton by a staggering 79 points with the african-american community. he's got ground to make up. frankly, his new pitch isn't striking everyone as pitch perfect from critics. calling it condescending. a top aide telling nbc news that the outreach is part of an ongoing conversation. there's mre

breaking news on three big stories. central italy was rocked with an earthquake. new details as the zika zone is expanding in florida. trash bags littered the beltway and doing damage to the rush hour commute in montgomery county. we have live team coverage in all the big stories. we begin with meagan fitzgerald live on the crash approaching river road. meagan? >> reporter: eun and aaron, this happened at 1:00 this morning. now that the sun is up, you can see better here what actually happened. that silver tractor-trailer tipped over on to the right shoulder of the northbound lane here. again, it happened around 1:00. crews have been out here for several hours trying to clean up this mess. want to show you video that we shot earlier showing you exactly whathe

they were trying to off-load the contents of that tractor-trailer, which were hundreds of boxes of plastic bags that they were trying to push off into a dumpster. we're told crews are doing that so that they can pick this tractor-trailer up, put it on its wheels and haul it out of here. we're told that won't happen until 9:00 this morning. that's the important thing here. that's when they tell us that three lanes of the northbound 495 is going to be closed off while crews try and haul this tractor-trailer out of here. so anybody who can possibly avoid this area at 9:00, certainly advised to do so. police tell us that the driver of this tractor-trailer has been cited for negligent driving. but no injuries at this point to report. back to you. kristin wright at the live desk. again, still following the devastating earthquake in italy. we're showing you a l

this is what it looks like across much of central italy today. an absolute war zone. the mag nunitude quake struck i the middle of the night. people were sleeping in their beds. the death toll is 37 people. but that number is in flux as we see in situations like this. because the search and rescue effort is far from over. this is all happening about 100 miles from rome. two towns just leveled there. people are buried in the rubble of their collapsed home. we have some video, i think, we want to show you. we have been seeing these images of rescues happening where you are seeing people being carried out from underneath rubble where they are trapped and big teams, rescuers are trying to get to these people. pope francis, we understand, today prayed the rosary with the faithful in

by the utter devastation. aaron, back to you. >> kristin wright for us at the live desk. 6:48 right now. benning road is now clear of this pretty serious crash. a car flipped and another one had lots of damage after they collided on benning road just east of the h street corridor last night. d.c. police say no one was killed here. it's not clear how seriously they were injured, though. we're working to find out the exact cause of that crash. as of this morning, there are more than 40 homegrown cases of the zika virus and they're appearing in new areas. mike spears is on miami beach this morning from our sister station with details. >> i'm michael spears in miami beach. crews have another busy day ahead as far as mosquito control efforts. we're not only talking about spraying, but code enforcement officers will be out on the street as well. the health department announced four new

little life into the early parts of the peak of return season. officially it peaks around labor day weekend. andrew, was 24 years ago. not had a major hurricane make landfall since 2005. the year of rita, wilma and katrina. that's the longest major hurricane drought on record. that record goes back into the 1850s. this is tropical storm gaston. likely to become a hurricane. but all indications that are this will stay well into the open atlantic. this area of disturbed weather here, just to east of puerto rico, this is starting to show signs. if it becomes a tropical storm, which is looking pretty likely in the next three to four days, it will take on the name ermine. it's closer in proximity to the u.s. it may make a run towards south florida late this weekend and
