before the new school year. and searching for survivors tonight in the rubble in central italy after the devastating earthquake. we start tonight with breaking news here at the live desk. an outbreak of at least eight tornados forced indiana governor mike pence to leave the campaign trai trail. >> oh my gosh, starbucks just got blown over. there is people in there. >> this is what it looks like after the twister completely flattened the starbucks. the company says none of its employees or customers were injured which is amazing when you look at the pictures. the mayor says tornados damaged at least 50 homes and towns and right now tens of thousands of people in indiana don't have power. the state police say no one has been seriously hurt but about a dozen people were injured including a 5 month old baby

violence in the neighborhood. >> we live three blocks from here. we play here. daycare brings the kids here during the daytime. it's rough. >> reporter: this evening, d.c. police talked to the community meeting. officers told the crowd they arrested 23-year-old jamie foster. detectives say he started going through someone's backpack on the basketball court last thursday. when the backpack owner confronted him about it, police say foster pointed a gun at him. the man walked away. at the same time surveillance video captures another man shooting. >> another individual in the background was firing a weapon in a different direction, not at the victim. fired several shots. >> reporter: no one was hurt. tonight, police are searching for the second suspect and say the two crimes are not related. >> you got it? >> reporter: he is tired of the violence. >> it's disturbing.

department officials. sources tell mark chief gregory dean will reassign two of his deputy chiefs, moving them away from day to day operations and replacing them. the head of the d.c. firefighters union ed smith will be promoted to battalion chief and means the union will come under new leadership. they have been working to improve the public image. the changes are expected to be announced early next month. a group of neighbors in fairfax county is fighting for a year to add a school bus route to their street. the school district says the houses are close enough for kids to walk when the new school year starts next month. but new tonight, parents tell our jackie benson the route these kids have to take is long, and not always safe. >> this is very remote as we go down the path, there are no homes. >> reporter: when her daughter began attending middle school, jennifer lopez was shocked how long the walk was.

appeared. in june, police reported a high school student was the victim of an attempted sexual assault on an adjoining section of the path. >> if you scream for help, you will not be heard during normal daylight hours since nobody is home. >> reporter: lopez learned her daughter and other middle and high school students from the development were not eligible to ride a school bus because their homes are considered to be walking distance. when she asked why they could not ride a school bus that passed a few blocks from the development, she was told that route was full a. member of the school bored says the developments' problem existed since the schools were built 11 years ago. >> for 111 kids, they can find that bus. it is the budget is there. i know it's there. i've been on that school board. i've sat on that board. >> reporter: at lopez' request, fairfax county schools transportation officials came to inspect the path. their report to her reads this path is an

free from unusual hazards. bus service is not eligible for bus service. you may continue to request. lopez said she continued to drive her daughter to school and press but learned this year her daughter will be allowed to ride a bus. she worries about the rest of the kids that will continue to make that walk to school. come fall, part of the trail will run along sections of woodland zoned for bow hurting. jackie benson, news 4. thousands of students are missing out on the first week back to school. it's because they are not immunized or haven't proven they have been vaccinated. the rule is, they have to stay home from school until they get it done. the deadline was the first day of school, which was yesterday. the school spokesman told us earlier there are still nearly 6400 students without proper documentation of their shots.

soccer suspended hope solo for six months after her comments she made during the olympics following the team's loss to sweden. after the americans were defeated solo said part quote we played a bunch of cowards, u.s. soccer said those weren't acceptable and require national team player. solo said in a statement she was saddened by the decision. the goalkeeper found herself in trouble before last year she served a 30-day suspension. according to u.s. soccer, the six-month suspension is effective immediately. from the live desk, i'm jason pew. you may want to hold off on plans to visit the monument. repairs on the elevator will keep it closed until mid september. the national park service said a more extensive repair service will start soon after and that project could take eight to nine months. the d.c. delegate says it's a long time but a step in the right direction. >> it's eer

the search is on tonight for a brazen armed robber in fairfax county. police tell us he held two women and a 7-year-old at gunpoint inside this beauty supply store in alexandria. it happened yesterday morning at beauty island on richmond highway. the gunman forced all three into the storeroom in the back. then he asked the owner to open up the safe. after he took the cash, he threatened to kill them if they called police.

technology coming to one virginia shopping center parking garage. next month cameras at the town center will start snapping pictures of your license plate after you park to find your car later. what you do is put your tag number into a kiosk, it shows you where your car is. garage owners say this is a perk, some drivers say the process violates privacy. they are concerned it will be too easy for a person to get a license plate number and find out where someone parks. this is trending all night on twitter, the name of an actress you know from "saturday night live" and the now "ghost busters" movie. actors are coming to the defense of leslie jones. they hacked nude photos of her. jones took down the website today. it's the second time this summer she's gone offline because of cyber attacks. last month she pulled twitter over racist and sexist tweets. just about all of us have

demand on young kids at an early age and this is part of our society. >> the american academy of pediatrics discourages screen time for children under the age of two and recommends no more than two hours of screen time daily over the age of two. in addition to straining young eyes, the academy says increased screen time can contribute to sleep and social disorders. it turns out angelina is near and farsighted and the best treatment will be monitoring vision and screen time as she continues to grow. she will also change her glasses prescriptions over time to accommodate her vision. and if myopia does run in the family, parents, you can watch your kids closely for signs and as the doctor said, doesn't hurt to send them outside to play. imagine that. >> imagine that. >> do they tell you that? >> they do. doug is here weather.

nobody was hurt in indiana. >> yeah, indiana, and now ohio. we have a couple tornados reported in ohio. this is a little tornado outbreak in indiana. earlier today we saw devastating damage but no one seriously hurt and no deaths, even though we've seen massive destruction, entire buildings just gone, really demolished here. that's the tornado. take a look closer showing the tornado and look at the debris inside the tornado. look at the damage just a couple of houses completely off the foundations. an ef 3 even in and around indianapolis they saw a few tornados earlier today, too. these were long track tornados, very tough to see. you don't get that in this area during the month of august. look what is going on now across the country and one thing you notice, these are the storms, let's look at the severe weather report. look at the tornado reports. you notice long track. look how long the one thunderstorms

tornados all the way from indiana to ohio. that's what they are dealing with. the severe threat lingering but tornado threat diminishing. something else we're watching. we're calling this tropical satellite. we've been talking about the storm down to the south. it's just north of san juan and right now really starting to fire up here. not a tropical depression or a storm just yet but could become one over the next few days and almost all the commuter models bring it through the babahamas. they will get strong winds and heavy rainfall but if it does impact the area as a strong tropical storm or hurricane, could be more. not expected to develop all that rapidly. that could mean good news for south florida here. we'll have to watch this closely, though. some computer models bring it back into the gulf of mexico and our region. that's something we'll watch towards next week. tonight, another great night. 76 degrees.
